Would you report your partner to the police if they confessed a crime?

No confession here, but I read a news story about a man who confessed to his fiancée that he’d been involved in a hit and run and buried the body and he kept that secret for a few years. Confessed to her, showed her where the body was hurried and she reported him to the police.

She actually got vilified by the locals too which is crazy to me.

I’d like to think I’d do the same, but I guess hard to tell without actually experiencing that situation first hand.

Absolutely, no question. I read that story. Good for her.

frozendaisy · 29/08/2023 19:46

Depends on the crime.
But yes.

BeakerCupSaucerEggs · 29/08/2023 19:47

No I probably wouldn’t. It depends on so many things though

Insommmmnia · 29/08/2023 19:48

Depends on the crime I guess

I think most people wouldn't report their partner for speeding even though its technically a crime

But death, rape, violence etc yes I would report

NuffSaidSam · 29/08/2023 19:48

In that circumstance i.e. they'd left a man to die at the side of the road and then buried his body in the woods, then yes of course I would.

But if he told me he'd been speeding/stolen something/minor crime then probably not.

Any unprovoked violence or anything sexual, definitely yes. The relationship is over at that point anyway.

Alwaysanotherwine · 29/08/2023 19:48

In that situation I would - out of fear as someone capable of that is actually quite scary

hit and runs would devastate most of us if it happened to us by accident - but to then hide it is another level and a bit psycho

does anyone have link to story?

if fraud or robbery then no

minou123 · 29/08/2023 19:48

In that scenario, absolutely yes.
There are family and friends who were missing the person, he killed. Not knowing what happened to them, for all those years must have been awful.

Murder - yes I'd report
Rape - yes, I'd report.
Most serious crimes I would

Speeding - mmmm, probably not

Fantina · 29/08/2023 19:49

It would also depend on the crime for me. But in those circumstances I absolutely would report. I’d find it easier to turn in a partner or spouse than my DC though. But again in those circumstances I probably would as it must have been hell on earth for the missing man’s family.

ClarkWGriswaldd · 29/08/2023 19:49

Well it depends on the crime!

Nicking something or defrauding a past company or dealing drugs - no. It may potentially make me re think the relationship of it was particularly bad but no I'd never go to the police

Telling me they'd killer someone - even accidentally - and buried their body? I'd just have to go to the police I think! I'd rather not be told tbh

caban · 29/08/2023 19:50

Rape or murder - definitely
Something like fraud, theft, drug dealing in younger days - no.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 29/08/2023 19:51

Totally depends the crime on anything where someone died or was injured I would report. Also serious fraud. Dropping litter or speedy for example I wouldn't bother.

Galaxy2846 · 29/08/2023 19:53

Yes I would if it was murder/rape

fortnumsfinest · 29/08/2023 19:54

When I saw this on the news last week I thought good on her, the fact she had the wit to place the van there to show police where exactly the poor man was buried was also quick thinking.
At least the family of the cyclist have some sort of closure now and it is solely down to this woman's bravery

PuttingDownRoots · 29/08/2023 19:56

Hidden a body? Definitely at least anonymously tell police where body is. There would be a family needing to know

fortnumsfinest · 29/08/2023 20:06

Can not van

lewav · 29/08/2023 20:15

I don't think I would in most circumstances, unless I thought I'd get into trouble myself for not reporting it.

Katmai · 29/08/2023 20:16

It would depend on the crime, but something of that seriousness, then yes, I would report it to the police.

Spramp · 29/08/2023 20:19

It doesn't sound like they had been together very long when he told his girlfriend and drove her to where the victims body had been hidden. I wonder why he decided to confess to her and why he took her to where he had hidden the body.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 29/08/2023 20:22

Hell yes. What kind of person does what they did?

SomePosters · 29/08/2023 20:26

In this example yes, I would.

If I knew an abused partner had gotten away with offing their tormentor then no

If I believed anyone to be in ongoing danger then absolutely

In that situation there would be no anonymity. The body had been hidden for a few years and then he confessed. Too much of a coincidence for him to then be caught. Also the police stated the body would most likely never been discovered.

But others clearly knew and already told the police who did nothing further than interview the murderer.

And for the record I’m talking about serious long sentence crime where you’d not be with your partner for years if ever and if you had children as well.

They were engaged though? Not sure how long they’d been together.

Dropping litter … come on

Serious crimes yes, speeding or parking, no.
