What age is old and elderly?

Just curious.
What age do you class as old?
As elderly?
Are they the same thing?
I ask as I'm unable to gauge what I am.
I'd love to know your age and your assessment.
Just a bit of fun.

I always thought middle aged = 10 years older than you and old / elderly = 10 years older than your parents!

I’d say old is probably 80+, elderly is more of a state of mind.

PerspiringElizabeth · 29/08/2023 14:49

Yeah I’d say it’s more to do with physical and mental state than age.

MIL isn’t 70 yet but has been elderly for about a decade - very poor health, is in a home etc.

My grandparents are 90 and I’d say the last couple of years they’ve turned elderly.

Old = 78+ I’d say. Like that sketch ‘I’m 82 you know!!’ - 82 isn’t remarkable these days IME. If someone said to me ‘well, I AM 75 you know’ I’d be like…. ‘Ok…?’.

IncompleteSenten · 29/08/2023 14:51

I consider myself middle aged. I'm 49.

Elderly I would say 80+

Sirzy · 29/08/2023 14:55

I think a lot of it depends on the person and their physical and mental state.

There is only 2 years between my parents but really due to health problems sadly my dad seems a lot older than my mum.

BaaCode · 29/08/2023 15:03

I won't see sixty again and I don't even class myself as middle aged, let alone old 😂
To me, old and elderly are 80+ and shuffle about inside their homes waiting for the warden to visit.
My parents are in their nineties and away on holiday as I type. They're fit, fiercely independent and do everything for themselves, I do realise this isn't the norm for a lot of older people though of course. To me they're just ' getting on ' rather than old.
I think if I called my mum old, she'd probably biff me with her rolling pin 😂

Old is probably more of a state of mind and very individual
In Only Murders in the Building, when discussing how to talk with young people, the 'olds' Oliver and Charles say that Mabel (who is 29) has 'old lady energy'. Made me laugh.
As you were.

Gives @ArcticLingered the side eye.

Shitzngiggles · 29/08/2023 15:25

Fuck me, didn't realise I should be thrown on the scrapheap at 60. I'm still in my prime thank you very much.

Just wow!

TheAloe · 29/08/2023 15:29

State of mind. I have parents who retired in their late 50s and now in their 60s very rarely leave the house and have fully embraced the OAP lifestyle. It’s absolutely nuts!!

WinterFireJanuaryEmbers · 29/08/2023 15:29

Old is my age after a night out (I'm 43).

Elderly is a few years older than my grandma (she's 92).

I think it’s very individual too but middle aged is in your 40’s and old is probably 70’s and elderly 80+. But you can get some very for and strong 80 year olds and some frail 69 year olds so it is individual.

Floralnomad · 29/08/2023 15:30

My MIL is 90 , she’s been old since she was 50 ( as was FIL before he died ) , it’s about state of mind .

Problesolving · 29/08/2023 15:32

I always think of old as an age, although as I get older this number gets bigger! Elderly I have always thought of a more of a reflection of someone’s health and mobility.

I’d agree with this.

Just wow!

At 60? Most people won’t retired at this point.

Could everybody please report the foul ageism when they see it. And do join us on the Site Stuff thread where we are trying to get HQ to see that it's relentless recently and if they don't want MN to become an echo chamber of insulting and offensive generalisations they need to act.
