Switched on my bed side light and this fella ducked behind my bedside cabinet. 😱 he’s about 4 cm toe to toe.

arachnophobics do not click the pic!

I had one in my bedroom earlier. I could hear a weird tapping and looked up and saw the biggest house spider I have ever seen. Probably 6cm wide. I jumped across the room and woke poor DH up. I'm not really bothered by spiders but when I can hear it walking than I am outta there! 😱

Isn’t the tapping when they call their mate?

Jesus Christ are you trying to give me a stroke? I won't be sleeping tonight...

I'm not over fond of house spiders and yet i can hold my dh pet Goliath...this is me yesterday.

MissHarrietBede · 29/08/2023 20:06

Ahhhh the cuddly toy of arachnida 😘

Poshjock · 29/08/2023 20:40

TBH I was expecting this thread to go down the burn the house down route and I am pleasantly surprised and heartened that it has become a bit of a spider appreciation thread. Even the haters are being supportive. I can happily ignore spiders but I don't like them too close and too skittish.

I haven't gone looking for my bed mate, he's still there as far as I know.

Since we are sharing photos, I shared my bedroom with this freeloader on holiday in South Africa one time.

In a previous house, I was reading quietly then heard a large spider scuttle OVER THE CARPET. Goodness knows what he had on his feet to make that racket on a soft surface.

CeriB82 · 29/08/2023 21:09

Why the hell dod i click on this knowing what it was? And clicking on the photos? Fuck sakes.

i had one on my curtain the other day. So big I swear he had been away on holiday and gluttony over took him. DS came to my rescue and battered him. He’s scared himself bless him

No I think they'll get married and become newlywebs 😄

😂😂

Catsmere · 30/08/2023 03:00

I'm impressed with the size of all these British spiders! I usually assume you don't have big ones. The biggest I've encountered here in Australia are huntsmen, which can get very big - leg span of 15.9cm in one species in my state - and run very fast (they don't make webs, they pursue prey). Amazingly I haven't had any indoors for a couple of years, and any other types have been fingernail-size garden spiders who've got lost, and recently a jumping spider who appeared on my hand - luckily it was easy to pop him back outside. I used to be petrified of spiders, but now I may be startled, but not much worse than that. Be different if redbacks got in, of course ...

Twinsmummy1812 · 30/08/2023 03:36

I am trying so hard to be cool about spiders. There was a huge one in my bathroom the other day and we agreed to eye each other warily and give each other space. However looking at all your pictures has undone me and I’m back at square one. I don’t know why I’m so frightened, nothing else bothers me (wasps, ants, daddy long legs etc)

I have a few teeny spoods around. I’m not sure I like this one being quite so close though. I don’t think I can move him. I did try to nudge him to the other side of the cabinet but he’s hunkered in and being quite resistant 😆 I usually try to move bigger ones into the garden shrubbery where they have a better chance of catching prey. Doubt there’s much for him in here.

They come into the house deliberately this time of year as they struggle in the colder temps over winter Smile

Rowgtfc72 · 30/08/2023 04:34

Not a spider fan. In fact that's an understatement.
But I can't kill them when they get in the house, I have to put them out.
It may take up to an hour to do but I go for a jug- I have 3 depending on spider size- and nice thick card.

Mystro202 · 30/08/2023 04:39

Omg I'm so glad we aren't the only house with giant guests! I blame the fact that our house is so old with too many nooks and crannies. I've taken to spraying them with lemon juice and water when I see them. Not sure if it does any good but it makes them scarper 😕

WhateverMate · 29/08/2023 09:07

Yes, you can book one on the web Blush

It's just occurred to me that like all of you, I always think of spiders as being male and name them accordingly.

Perhaps that's why they're trying to grab our attention? They're trying to raise their profile - fighting for lady spider recognition?

I assumed my chonk was a she, so that's why I called her Billie rather than Billy. "Big Balls" was just me amusing myself, because it's a euphemism for "tough" and yet we all know the half of the population without balls has to be tougher.

That said, when I was young and living at my parents, we had a similarly chonky, but much smaller spider living in the brickwork next to the fireplace. We called him (or maybe her) "Boris". A name I feel has since fallen into disrepute.

I don't want to google, but are red backs the poisonous ones?

I use a spider catcher to put them outside, wish I liked them

I have a Black Widow right outside my front door. DH has been instructed to leave her alone. I like to think she’s stopping the nasties coming in. I don’t mi d biders indoors but prefer they stay out of my bedroom.

You either aren't based in the UK or mean a false widow? (not a black widow?) 🙏

Yes, they are (well, all spiders are venomous, it's just whether their venom affects humans). Fortunately antivenin has been available for years, and most bites aren't that serious.

I just saw that they've been accidentally introduced in Europe, among other places ... stay away from Belgian greenhouses!

WingingItSince1973 · 30/08/2023 08:53

Each September we are inundated with daddy long legs. Up the walls on the ceiling. They don't bother me at alll. But for some reason spiders do. We've had some massive ones the last few days. Dd had one lane on her face in the night so she slept downstairs and promptly stripped and cleaned her room the next day. I'd like to thank that spider 😂 I won't kill them thouth. If dh isn't here to remove them I'll have a go with a cup or bowl, depending on size. I really wish I could like them. Some I leave alone that are minding their own business in the corners but those that invade my personal space have to go.

WingingItSince1973 · 30/08/2023 08:53

Sorry for typos haven't got my glasses on 😂
