Anyone else just bloody love Agatha Christie books?

I've read them all (bar Poirot's last case) over the years and every time I can't think what to read I go back and read one of them again. Love the descriptions of the characters, the settings, the clothes, all of it!

First one I read in my teens was The Murder of Rodger Ackroyd and I still think it's one of the best whodunnits I've read.

Anyone else have a favourite AC book?

Have a look at the Jill Paton Walsh Wimsey-Vane books, carrying on from after Busman’s Honeymoon. I thought that, in general, she did a really good job.

Thanks, I have read them all! 😄

All except Appointment with Death, and the Tommy and Tuppence one where Dame Agatha was obviously suffering from memory loss.

I can't believe I was put off Poirot by that awful man who plays him on TV. On the bright side I now have another 65 books on my TBR list.

Do you mean David Suchet?

He was perfect in the role.

Thank you for starting this thread @Puffypuffin . I'd never read any Agatha Christie until two weeks ago and at the advanced age of 68 listened to The Body in the Library read by the splendid Stephanie Coles, who has a lovely voice.

I enjoyed it very much, though balked at the confident assertion that a murder victim must have been dead before being placed in a burning car, based on the flimsiest of evidence. I know it was back in the day, but really.

You can tell it’s AC from the way it’s written, and I think it’s a pretty unsparing account of how her first marriage hit the rocks. Poor Agatha.

OTOH, I think she had a much more interesting and fulfilling life with Max than she would have if she'd stayed with Archie. Not to mention finding inspiration for so many books.

HollieHobbie · 29/08/2023 00:15

Love Agatha Christie books. Poirot is my favourite but I won't read the last one because it would kill him for me, and I prefer feeling that sometime, somewhere he's solving a murder using his little grey cells!

I think I've got them all, both paperback and on audible (listen when I'm working). Perfect comfort reading. 😊

Shoxfordian · 29/08/2023 05:58

I love Agatha Christie too- my favourites are Towards Zero, Pale Horse and I quite like Nemesis as well.

Read her nonfiction "Come, tell me how you live" for some fascinating tales about life with Max.

My favourite is AC book is Evil under the sun and all the Miss Marple books. I had an elderly great aunt who was very like Miss M (as she said herself, the '30s were her era). When she died her favourite cocktail, a White Lady, was served at her funeral.

I'm 51 and I've never read one! I read a lot, but crime is not my genre at all. However, this thread has tempted me. I quite fancy a warm, light period read with some fun characters. Bonus for a vaguely exotic location. Which one shall I start with?

If you want an exotic location, A Caribbean Mystery would be a good one. Miss Marple.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/08/2023 08:33

Thanks for the recommendations! I actually realised I had Murder on the Orient Express on my Kindle for some reason, so I started with that one and am halfway through and really enjoying it! I look forward to reading your recommendations next. I've recommended it to 18yo dd too - I think she'd like it!

burnoutbabe · 29/08/2023 08:54

I am doing a poirot read through via Libby (library ebook app)

I shall next do marple -only 13 though!

Only one I could not find is the mousetrap short plays book so not read that one.

Curtains -plc is good for it's Hastings return (who is also not in that many stories!)

Puffypuffin · 29/08/2023 15:19

DD and I have just been listening to the audio book of Appointment With Death in the car and ended up driving an extra 5 miles because we didn't want to stop the car. 😂

Strange because I read a lot and had never read one before this year & I hated it. Real disappointment. It was And Then There were None.

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 29/08/2023 15:46

And Then There Were None is a bit different from AC's usual style. If you wanted to have another go, you could try one of the Miss Marples - The Murder at the Vicarage or The Body in the Library are good places to start.

I like any of the books featuring Mrs Ariadne Oliver - they show that Dame Agatha had a sense of humour and was capable of making gentle fun of herself.

Agree completely. I loved And Then There Were None, but, as you say, it's a little different from her usual style so perhaps not the best one to start with.

I love them! I read them as a teen, my mum had them all.
Unfortunately she decided storing her books in a damp garage would be a good idea, against my advice, so they were ruined.

I've just started reading them again, picking them up in charity shops. Currently reading Murder in Mesopotamia.

Frosty1000 · 29/08/2023 16:05

Love love love Sleeping murder and a murder is announced.

burblish · 29/08/2023 22:28

I’ve loved AC since I was about 11 or 12 years old and I have every single one of her books. So hard to pick favourites but contenders would include The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, The Man in the Brown Suit, The Hollow, Crooked House, Hercule Poirot’s Christmas. Opening an AC book feels like greeting an old friend (albeit one with a dark imagination!).

I was going to suggest this one! Great book. Love that Mr Rafiel comes back - in a way - in Nemesis, which I absolutely love. Not the best Miss Marple but one of my favourites, it's quite haunting and such a slow-burn solving of a long-ago murder.

I am an enormous Agatha Christie fan. My mum said of her 'I found her quite dated' - that's the point and the comfort :) But also her plots are second to none.

Needhelp101 · 29/08/2023 23:41

Oh, and Curtain (Poirot's Last Case) is really good. The TV adaptation is also amazing.

Likewise And Then There Were None. A book I still find a little bit creepy to read on my own on a dark night. And the recent-ish TV adaptation is brilliant, so well cast and acted.

burnoutbabe · 30/08/2023 12:35

just checked and curtains is the final epsiode in season 13 of the david suchet poirots, which are all on ITV X. i shall watch it after my poirot re-read finishes.

WildFeathers · 30/08/2023 22:05

I have just seen that “And then there was none” stage adaption is touring in theatres. I shall be going to see that!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/09/2023 07:43

So I finished Murder on the Orient Express, my first Agatha Christie book, and really enjoyed it! I thought I'd try a Miss Marple one next, so I've downloaded Murder at the Vicarage.

DryIce · 01/09/2023 08:01

Oh my people! I love Agatha Christie, I used to scoue second hand book shops for her as a child. A few years ago I subscribed to a service that sent me a book every few weeks with the original cover, so now I have the matching full set!

They are the ultimate comfort read for me, even if I know them so well there are no more surprises.
