Anyone else just bloody love Agatha Christie books?

I've read them all (bar Poirot's last case) over the years and every time I can't think what to read I go back and read one of them again. Love the descriptions of the characters, the settings, the clothes, all of it!

First one I read in my teens was The Murder of Rodger Ackroyd and I still think it's one of the best whodunnits I've read.

Anyone else have a favourite AC book?

I like Sleeping Murder. And the short stories in the book with Philomel Cottage, forget what it's called.

SpikeWithoutASoul · 27/08/2023 20:31

I love them and my DD started reading them this year. She’s working her way through all the Poirots and is hooked. She’s 11 and doesn’t like any fantasy books or books with issues so is hard to please. Been lovely to see her so totally absorbed.

ISaySteadyOn · 27/08/2023 20:31

Me! I actually really love Tommy and Tuppence.

DD1 and DD2 are starting to get into AC too. Such good books.

Me too! I started reading them as a teenager , my mum had them all, and I was hooked. I might reread thanks to this thread!

Carouselfish · 27/08/2023 20:32

But yes, they are my perfect sit out in the sunny garden and read in one sitting book.

Puffypuffin · 27/08/2023 20:38

DH and I going to see And Then They Were None at the theatre next year, I absolutely loved that book, so creepy.

Really enjoyed the TV adaptation with Aiden Turner in it.

It's great to read all these Agatha Christie recommendations I'm noting them down as I have re-awakened my love of her books.

Yes, that is my favourite of hers and I too enjoyed the TV adaptation.

StellaOlivetti · 27/08/2023 20:44

I adore Agatha Christie. They were my bridge to grown up books, and I still love them now. My favourites are: And Then There Were None, Five Little Pigs, Crooked House and A Murder is Announced. Towards Zero is also brilliant.

Puffypuffin · 27/08/2023 20:51

Isn't it lovely that so many of us have a love for these books. Even though they're murder books they have such warmth that you wouldn't expect.

I love them all! Then there was None is a good one I think. I’ve also been to see the mousetrap and another play (adaptation of one of the books) in Edinburgh too. My absolute favourite books.

WildFeathers · 27/08/2023 20:53

Along with The Disc World. Have everything on a kindle now but have kept all my Agatha Christie and Terry Pratchet books.

Girlfrom15YearsAgo · 27/08/2023 20:54

It occurred to me around 18 months ago that despite an obsession with crime/thriller/whodunit novels, having read various adaptations of Christie classics and watched every film and TV version I could find over a period of around 30 years, I had never actually read any of her novels 😳

Since realising this, I've been reading all and as many as I can lay my hands on! Don't know why it has taken me so long. Favourites so far are Crooked House, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Endless Night and And Then There Were None.

I also recently bought and read Marple which is a book of 12 new Marple stories by contemporary authors. It was a bit hit and miss but some of the stories were brilliant.

I also recommend The Decagon House Murders as a brilliant retelling of ATTWN. It's a Japanese novel, available in translation.

Has anyone read Lucy Worsley's biography of Agatha Christie? I think I'm going to ask DH for that for Christmas this year.

Thank you so much for mentioning the play! Just booked tickets for me and DD.

ShitsCreep · 27/08/2023 20:58

I have read none of them 😧 do they need to be read in order? I’ve just downloaded Roger ackroyd after reading this thread, but will it make sense without reading others first?

SquirrelFan · 27/08/2023 20:59

I do. Also got the love of them from my mum. My favourites are Sad Cypress and Thirteen at Dinner. I've recently discovered the books of Patricia Wentworth, who was almost as well - known as AC back in the day. Not quite the same but scratches the Christie itch!

mogtheexcellent · 27/08/2023 21:00

I love the stand alone books most. Destnation unknown, the pale horse, man in brown suit are all great but the best one in my opinion is why didnt they ask evans.

My fave poirot is cat among the pigeons. Fave marple I cant decide between sleeping murder or nemesis.

My 1960s paperbacks are falling apart so im slowly replacing with hardbacks, a mix of facsimiles and 1960s hardbacks.

I got into them aged 15 as they were light and small enough to carry in bag for underground a d bus journeys. (Also Pg wodehouse).

IWasFunBeforeMum · 27/08/2023 21:02

Read about 20 of them
And then there were none is my fave and the BBC show from a few years ago was fab.

Hawkins0090 · 27/08/2023 21:06

Mine was murder on the orient express, mainly red when waiting for lectures at university.

Beaverbridge · 27/08/2023 21:06

Think I read them all. Worked in the printers back in the day where they were printed. We had a book sale so got the paperbacks for pennies. Think my mother got rid of them all when I left home. ABC murders was my favourite.

Coffeepott · 27/08/2023 21:08

@Whatsthepoint1234 not AC but at that age (and now) I loved the Sherlock Holmes stories.

Habreathmint · 27/08/2023 21:12

I love the idea of the 12 year old boy dying for his next AC!

Shangrilalala · 27/08/2023 21:12

Death comes as the end was always my favourite as a teen. I think I will reread. My two DC have read and enjoyed many AC titles recently and it thrills me that she can still draw younger readers in.

The first I ever read was Hercule Poirot’s Christmas. I was bored in the school library and picked it up at 13. I possibly only read Agatha Christie for the next few years.

The only one I failed to read was Murder in Mesopotamia, but maybe I will give that another go.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 27/08/2023 21:13

I am another fan of The Man In The Brown Suit, but I love all of them, particularly A Pocketful Of Rye, The Mysterious Affair at Styles and Lord Edgware Dies...but they are all magnificent.
