Just that really.

Where would be scenic / good food to go with some visitors from the US in York?

Kapalkavadi

There are so many good restaurants in York, you just need to decide why at type of thing you want to eat!

Ambiente (tapas)
Yuzu (Korean street food)
El Gaucho (Argentinian steak)
Los Moros (North African)
Star Inn The City
Cafe No.8
Spark has lots of street food outlets as well as places to get drinks
Refectory (lovely building right next to the Minster but might be a bit pricey for what you're after)

And if you're after breakfast somewhere, Blue Barkaban on Fossgate does, IMO, the best breakfast in York. There are plenty of other places on Fossgate too that are lovely.

Starr Inn The City (if it’s still open)

I second Betty's. Nothing quite like it. Americans would love it. Make sure you show them the mirror downstairs.

Don't bother. Overpriced and overrated.

If the House of trembling madness is still there try that. It's in Stonegate.

hamstersarse · 26/08/2023 16:49

thank you so much all for the suggestions.

I think an olde pub is a good option thinking about it some more - it's all about the history I guess for the Americans

Is the Golden Fleece the best option?

Another vote for a haunted pub. Golden Fleece is fine. Food is pretty standard pub fare.

We didn't actually eat in it so I can't speak for the quality of the food but I looked at the menu and it seems standard.

My DDs had seen it featured on a TV show about ghosts and were curious! It's quaint! Thought it might appeal to your American guests.

House of trembling madness is an old type pub. They brew their own beer I think.

Rocknrollstar · 26/08/2023 17:16

We took Americans to York five years ago and to be honest they loved Weatherspoons - the prices and ordering via the app at the table!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 26/08/2023 17:30

We were in York a couple of weeks ago and went to The Fat Badger for dinner. Food was good. There is a beer garden right under the city walls with a view of York Minster and the inside of the pub was old and quirky with lots of different little rooms.

I8toys · 26/08/2023 17:37

Defo house of trembling madness for breakfast - the one on stonegate. It has a wall of death. Stuffed animals of all descriptions - its a talking point.

Also the gardens outside the Minister - there is a nice cafe you can sit and look at the Minister if the weather is nice.

Ask Italian in York is in a beautiful building, the food is good. Google search images, it’s in the grand assembly rooms.

I like Betty's for breakfast. Much less of a queue and it is fun to enjoy the atmosphere.

Agree with this and then you can pick up some of the lovely cakes in the shop to enjoy after a day of sight-seeing 😊

Sora sky bar on the roof of malmasion is worth going to for a drink just for the stunning views. The minster looks great from high up and is not often seen from that angle

Scottishlanza · 26/08/2023 21:11

We like https://lavecchiascuola.co.uk the old school house, ask for a table in the conservatory overlooking the cathedral. Lunch is especially good value

La Vecchia Scuola – Italian Restaurant

Ask Italian really nice, chilled out & not too pricey, central & stunning building.

Star in the City
Totally fab food and venue

eleanorwish · 26/08/2023 21:54

Most of the people who queue for Betty's want to sit on the ground floor. We've always found you can move up the queue quicker if you are willing to sit downstairs
