Just that really.

Where would be scenic / good food to go with some visitors from the US in York?

How many, what sort of budget? With kids etc?

hamstersarse · 26/08/2023 15:05

sorry - All adults aged 30-65 and 7 of us in total

Budget is mid level, little bit fancy but not OTT

I'd recommend Forest restaurant at Galtres Lodge on Petergate. Lovely food and quirky.

TheNoodlesIncident · 26/08/2023 15:11

Rustique French restaurant in Castlegate. Was very very good, the food was lovely, the atmosphere was great, beautiful surroundings.

We were all visitors to York and were glad we went there for dinner.

There are some really beautiful restaurants in York in amazing buildings, like pizza express and ask, unfortunately the food is very mediocre! For a nice meal in a really old building I would recommend Grays court - the evening is tasting menu only, but they do a garden lunch - the garden is beautiful and backs onto the city walls.

Loopytiles · 26/08/2023 15:22

Betty’s!

Alighttouchonthetiller · 26/08/2023 15:31

I went to Rustique recently - the food was absolutely fine, although not particularly exciting, however the staff were lovely and the restaurant atmosphere was great. They have a little outside terrace upstairs, if the weather is fine it's worth asking to sit out there.

cakeorwine · 26/08/2023 15:40

Just find a pub that does food. Restaurants are one thing, but a good traditional pub with beer and pub food. You don't get that in the USA

quicklybeendrivenmad · 26/08/2023 15:42

Loch fyne is mainly seafood but they do some meat dishes have eaten here afew times and its been good.

hairypaws · 26/08/2023 15:44

We went to Trio's tapas last night. Food was gorgeous.

MissDollyMix · 26/08/2023 15:46

The Ivy in York is one of the better ones. Ate O Clock, Rustique, Lucia’s also good.

Toby Carvery at Monk's cross 🤣🤣

If you like authentic pizza and stunning medieval timber framing you could try La Piazza Antica on Goodramgate. I haven’t been since it reopened but it is getting good reviews.

Wrongsideofpennines · 26/08/2023 15:55

Rustique is nice. We took some Australians to Ask as although the food is average they really enjoyed the setting.

Maybe an interesting pub might be good enough though. Lendal Cellars is interesting inside, The Lowther floods when the river does and The Golden Fleece is supposed to be the most haunted pub.

BalloonSlayer · 26/08/2023 15:55

I second Betty's. Nothing quite like it. Americans would love it. Make sure you show them the mirror downstairs.

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 26/08/2023 15:57

Don’t go to the Ivy, if that’s one of the better ones it’s a wonder they’re still in business.

I second going to a pub, but I do like Yak and Yeti for the novelty of sitting on the floor. 😂

Betty’s is a ‘thing’ though isn’t it for tourists so probably there.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/08/2023 16:12

I think Betty’s is nice but not worth the epic queue there is at most times. If you can’t go at a quiet time you can always get cakes to take away from the cake shop there and go and eat them in the museum gardens or Dean’s Park.

cakeorwine · 26/08/2023 16:15

Grab some lunch in the food stalls at the Shambles Market - lots of choice there and you can sit outside and people watch.

Then go to the queue at the "Original Harry Potter shop" on the Shambles and then join the queue at the Ghost Merchant shop. Followed by the queue for Betty's.

Campervangirl · 26/08/2023 16:22

Star in the city, Museum St, it overlooks the river.
Cut and craft.

Another vote for Betty’s.

The Golden Fleece - most haunted pub?
