London to Gatwick help please

We are over from Dublin for musicals yet again but the trains are striking tomorrow.

We are staying in Gatwick airport tomorrow night before an early flight back to Dublin next day .

We will be leaving London at 22:30 tomorrow evening . What’s the best way to try to get to Gatwick without the train ?

Tube to Morden and taxi ?? Thanks so much for any wisdom, local advice !

There's a National Express coach from Victoria

Goldencup · 25/08/2023 17:02

I was just about to say coach.

FoodieToo · 25/08/2023 17:32

Thank you ! The earliest one seems to be 12 and takes 2 hours ?

Wherein London are you staying

TheWayoftheLeaf · 25/08/2023 22:21

Download CityMapper. On the day it'll give you all the options without everything that's down

TheFlis12345 · 25/08/2023 22:24

You need to tell us where in London, it’s a big place!

GentlemenPreferBlondes · 25/08/2023 22:32

Trains usually still run, even on strike days, just less often and less reliably. Check timetables for your preferred route/operator.

LIZS · 25/08/2023 22:36

NE Coach goes via Heathrow which is why it takes two hours. The last train down to Gatwick leaves about 9pm. You might be able to get down to Croydon via underground/tram but cab after that,

kegofcoffee · 25/08/2023 22:38

Where in London are you travelling from?

Honestly, I think you're better off getting a cab from somewhere more central that's nearer the A23 (maybe Clapham).

Morden is around a 45min tube from central London then another 40minutes to Gatwick. Although probably more expensive a cab from Victoria will take around an hour and not have the faff of change transport multiple times

TookTheBook · 25/08/2023 22:39

I used to get the direct coach to Gatwick from South London, no way it goes via Heathrow usually.

But agreed that some trains will still run you'll be fine by train if you're not trying to get a flight on time.

MyAnacondaMight · 25/08/2023 22:39

I assume you’re going to be at a show and can’t leave earlier? The last scheduled Gatwick train from London Bridge is currently 21:30, but that might change tomorrow.

Yes I think tube to Morden and an Uber might be your best bet, but check the trains again tomorrow.

This was my initial thought too.

But it looks like the overground isn't running past 9.30 either so you can't even get to East Croydon.

West End presumably- she says they are in London “for musicals”.

There are no Thameslink services after 9pm and Gatwick Express not running at all. I think I’d just resign myself to paying for a pre-booked cab (not a black cab). Addison Lee or the like.

cherryassam · 25/08/2023 22:45

If you can’t leave any earlier than 22:30, I would just prebook a cab to your hotel. I don’t think there is a coach late enough and the trains etc aren’t running

ConnieSaks · 25/08/2023 22:46

You can get the overground to West Croydon and then get a taxi from there (although Croydon is not pretty at the best of times!). It is though closer to LGW than Morden. Canada Water may be best station to pick up the overground via jubilee - depends where your starting point is (I’m assuming west end?).

Check the TFL journey planner and live departure information tomorrow though.

OdeToBarney · 25/08/2023 22:54

I would try and get to Clapham/ Streatham/ Brixton/ Croydon and get a cab from there. It's going to cost you a fortune from the west end or Morden! Aim for a station somewhere near the A23, even if you have to get a bus?

ConnieSaks · 25/08/2023 22:55

The overground is running from Canada Water to West Croydon tomorrow late evening (an underground service to Croydon doesn’t exist). It’s a journey of just over half an hour.

Mind you just to avoid Croydon I might be tempted to book a taxi from Central London as others have suggested!

FoodieToo · 26/08/2023 00:00

Thank you all SO much , I am so grateful! You’re all so knowledgeable and helpful.

Sorry maybe I should have been clearer. We are in Wyndham Theatre until
10:30 .

The only buses I can see with availability leave at 3am. Unless you fancy hanging out at Bar Italia I think you night have to cab it.

Peony654 · 26/08/2023 07:29

I’d tube to Brixton and Uber from there, as you’re already on the A23.

Sssudio · 26/08/2023 07:35

I am just looking at getting from LB to East Croydon later (I live here, it's fine despite what a PP said).

You could get overground to West Croydon then get the 405 to Redhill and then another bus to Gatwick from there (or taxi, it's about 10/25 minutes), or get the tube to Wimbledon and then tram to West Croydon and again the 405.

Or just taxi from Croydon, there's loads of Ubers or a mini cab firm at West Croydon station.

pinkdelight · 26/08/2023 07:46

Yeah tube to Brixton then walk up past the Ritzy and get an Uber. They don't like stopping on the road lower down by the tubes/buses, so the corner of Saltoun Rd and the main road is a good spot for picking up.

GloriousSludge · 26/08/2023 07:50

If you want to do tram to Croydon, from the West End it might be quicker to take the Northern line to South Wimbledon and walk 800m to Merton Park tram stop (assuming not carrying heavy bags), as District line to Wimbledon will be quite slow with big gaps between Wimbledon trains at that time of night.

The 100 bus runs from Redhill bus station most of the night, and goes straight to Gatwick. Takes about half an hour.

ConnieSaks · 26/08/2023 09:55

You can take a Northern line tube and change for the jubilee line at Waterloo or London Bridge for Canada Water (personally I’d avoid doing the tram from Wimbledon area to Croydon)!

hope all goes well
