What are your favourite/nicest things about humanity?

I've been a little despairing of humanity lately with so many horrendous stories in the news so I'm trying to focus on the positives.

What are your favourite things about people/humanity generally?

One thing that really made me smile is the FB fan page for Willow the Didcot cat. That so many people love this random cat and that people from around the world are joining because seeing Willow makes them smile is just lovely. It's a quirky little thing that is just lovely imo especially knowing that there are other much adored pets/wildlife out there that some town or village have claimed as theirs.

Also seeing an elderly man giving a woman(In genuine need, not a chancer and foreign and clearly unfamiliar with the system here) a few pounds today towards her bus fare(Drivers don't give change here) so that she didn't need to lose a £20 was so nice.

Will come back to this - am thinking!

The young people I see daily who have no time for all the current woke nonsense and just get on with their jobs.

About an hour ago I was crossing the road with two kids and a dog, no lights. DD with the dog hesitated and went back when DS and I had run across, and she got stuck waiting for another gap in the traffic. A woman came along, clearly seeing the situation and came to a complete stop, gesturing to my DD to cross and waving at me to assure me it was OK. I mouthed a thank you and we smiled. Little every day moments like this make a difference. I always try to do similar.

Creativity, I have all the time in the world to watch, listen, taste and feel what others have been driven to create.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 25/08/2023 15:45

Most of us try very hard.

VeridicalVagabond · 25/08/2023 15:45

How we'll pack bond with anything.

How many people have named their Roombas and treat them like pets?

It's adorable really.

LauderSyme · 25/08/2023 15:59

I hear you OP. I have recently stopped consuming current affairs altogether because humanity keeps doing so many desperately sad and bad things to each other and ourselves.

My very favourite counter-balance to all the suffering is to witness people making small, cherishing gestures of love and kindness to their family members, especially their young children.

I am not religious but I sometimes think that if we all loved the inner child inside each other the way Jesus preached, we really would create heaven on Earth

I have joined some heart-warming communities on Reddit because I needed my heart warmed! I like MadeMeSmile, wholesomememes and ContagiousLaughter.

People try to help ducklings cross the road.

LauderSyme · 25/08/2023 16:01

Lots of people are kind and considerate every day in a mundane sort of way. It is important to notice and treasure those acts 😊

LauderSyme · 25/08/2023 16:02

Lots of people turn out to try desperately hard to save beached whales.

OldTinHat · 25/08/2023 16:03

My neighbours. We all share stuff and it's not unusual to come home and find a bunch of flowers from a garden, a bag of windfall apples or homemade cake on the doorstep or hearing a holler from the garden and having goodies passed over the fence.

Isheabastard · 25/08/2023 16:23

I turn to The Dodo when I’m feeling jaded. It’s mostly animal rescue/adoption/fostering stories.

Thats where I came across The Asher House. It’s a chap in the USA who takes in dogs. You can see that he loves, loves dogs with every pore of his being.

It always makes me feel happy that there are people like that in the world.

BMW6 · 25/08/2023 16:30

You only hear about bad news generally on TV etc.

You must remember that every second of every single day millions of people are doing something nice for someone else, even if it's just a smile.

Eight year old Ronnie Blair's father murdered his mother and disabled sister and set Ronnie on fire as well as stabbing him.

He survived.

He was visited in hospital by the cop who arrived at the scene of the slayings.

The cop and his wife adopted him.

Absolutely wonderful story.

Love this thread!

How much less bigoted we are as a nation. I know there are still massive problems but DS is currently camping with an Asian friend, , 2 white friends and a black friend. DS is of mixed heritage. One is gay and another bisexual. None of them have thought about it but that wouldn't have happened when I was 16. In fact no one in my entire massive school was openly gay. And all the non white kids stuck together. Also love they have gone camping for the fun of it and walked around the Moors for fun.

Shady23 · 26/08/2023 01:41

Probably outing but I have a cat FB page which started with my old cat and carried on with my current boy and so many people comment to say it's their safe space on the internet. I work really hard with the admin of it to make sure there's no shitty comments or spam or anything, it's made a really nice group of people that I'm grateful for

When my cat had reached the end, one of the followers contacted me to say nobody should ever feel like they had to pay to end their pets life (I got what she meant). She sent me the money to pay his entire bill, individual cremation and his ashes back. I've never even met her

Also my neighbour. It's been 17 years and he never blinks at any request and is always there. DIY help, emergencies, zipping me into a dress Grin he's like a second Dad

AlecTrevelyan006 · 26/08/2023 07:56

Most people are mostly nice most of the time.

Pleasehelpmedress · 26/08/2023 07:56

I've always thought 99.9% of people are kind, you just don't hear about it.

A few years ago I was doing a many months long solo hike and the kindness I received from strangers was incredible, from buying me coffee and cake in cafes to giving me bottles of cold water from their cars sandwiches because I looked hot (I always had enough food and cash!). The most generous was a man who I'd been chatting to on a break, went to the town I was heading for that night and booked me a hotel room - then sent his wife out to intercept me and pass on the hotel name (he was worried it would look dodgy coming from him) so I had a luxurious night on a proper bed rather than my little tent. And I never even knew his name so no way to even thank him.

On a more mundane level a few neighbours and I all have liking for liquorice so if any of us ever travel somewhere where it's popular we bring packets back and distribute them through letterboxes!

AndThenItWas · 26/08/2023 08:02

There is a Facebook group called The Missing Piece which is just lovely. The only purpose of it is for members to help UK parents find replacement parts / missing pieces of their children's toys. It's not always successful and some posts never get replies, but the idea behind it is just so kind.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/08/2023 08:06

There’s an 80 year old woman near me without much family who I know from my craft group. She normally spends her evenings knitting for charity and her days running errands for other elderly people. She recently broke her hip and is immobile. Every time I pop round to see if she needs anything she says no and gives me a long list of the people who have already been round that day.

Steakandquinoa · 26/08/2023 08:08

The written word.

CarrieMoonbeams · 26/08/2023 08:40

Like others have said, I'm very thankful for my neighbours and the village we live in.

Literally everyone - even children and teenagers - says hello when you're passing on the street. People are helpful and caring to neighbours without being asked. We take in parcels for each other, keep an eye on each others' houses when someone is on holiday, walk dogs, feed cats or whatever for other people when required, get shopping for elderly neighbours in bad weather etc etc.

When we moved in here, the front garden was just stones. I started to clear them to get it ready for plants instead, and before long 2 people who I'd never met before offered to help. Once it was cleared and I'd prepped the soil, I was given loads of cuttings from neighbouring gardens, it saved me a fortune at the garden centre!

My favourite though is that all 22 houses in the street wake up to an Easter egg on the doorstep every year, with a note from the Easter bunny 🤔, even though the average age in the street is about 60. We all know that it's Elaine from number 16 (yes Elaine, we do know it's you even though you deny it 😊), it's such a kind thing to do.

Love it here.
