Can anyone ID this spider for me? It's just strolled across the carpet like it owns the place, and I've never seen one quite like it before...

Google is telling me it's a brown recluse spider, common in North America and also venomous and now I am shitting myself (caught it in a glass and threw it in the garden)... are there more??? Has it got mates?????? Babies?!

Eeeeeeeekkk. Oh and I am fucking terrified of spiders, it's taken a lot of bravado and general 'oh look a teeny tiny spider' (no-one else to deal with the fuckers here and dd is only five and don't want to pass on my terror to her) whilst internally screaming...

I mean, I know they are segmented (shudder) but the legs are all one colour.

I've read that if you spray your house with indorex it kills spiders. I don't know how effective it is but I did it last year and saw fewer than I'd expected, so have done it again this year. I know not everyone is down with killing spiders but when you're as scared as some of us are, August/September can be hellish.

Sorry to derail your thread but does anyone know ours? DH chased it out the back door!

Yours is the bog standard but beautiful Giant House Spider. A male. He’s looking for a lady to woo!

Turquioseblue · 24/08/2023 22:09

Oh for goodness sake, I live in Australia and we have spiders around all the time. If you leave it alone it won't hurt you. The poor spider is afraid of you!
If you must get it out of the house then put a glass over it carefully so you don't hurt it and slide a piece of paper underneath the glass and take it outside. Try to let it out where birds won't see it.

Thanks! Hope he found one in the garden, DH literally chased him out the door 😂

bangbangcauliflower · 24/08/2023 22:13

@Turquioseblue and this is why I specifically have never been to Australia, or for that matter, anywhere else that I might encounter even worse beasts than those that are lurking in my own home.

OP, your photo is unfortunately too fuzzy to identify completely, but it is 100% not a brown recluse. We don’t get them here, and it doesn’t resemble one.
My gut reaction is that it looks like a Drassodes species. The pale colour, long abdomen and the shape of the carapace.
The only thing I can say for sure about it is that it means you absolutely no harm. It won’t touch you. It is hard to actually pick up a spider even if you want to - they know you’re something big and threatening. And there are no dangerous spiders in the U.K.

What is it with all the spider threads on here? It’s a spider, leave it alone and it won’t hurt you. Simple.

This. Fucks sake.
Spiders are notoriously difficult to identify. There are so many different species and some of them are hard to tell apart.
Spiders in the house generally just go spidering around looking for food, shelter and mates. Not launching themselves at humans and biting them for fun.

dubyalass · 24/08/2023 22:31

Thank you @SweetPetrichor and @FictionalCharacter for your calm, intelligent and informative responses. I bloody hate these threads because of the "BURN THE HOUSE" and "KILL IT NOW" hysteria they tend to attract.

Spiders are part of our [rapidly declining] biodiversity. They eat other things you don't want in the house. They are just trying to live their lives. I get that their tendance towards surprise appearances isn't particularly welcome, and I myself have jumped several feet in the air when one's run out from under the sofa, but if you bothered to find out something about them, as the OP has to be fair, you might learn what fascinating creatures they are and - god forbid - reduce the fear factor at the same time.

Thank you… I don’t mind spiders and it gets on my nerves when people freak out, then the spider runs the opposite way and they are acting like it’s coming to hunt them down, I literally scream at them it’s not even near you. You leave them be and they don’t bother you.. it’s not hard to get 🤷🏼‍♂️

You literally scream at them? That's helpful.

A significant proportion of the population are afraid of spiders. Depending on where you live it's an illogical fear but it's a visceral one. There's no point getting annoyed with people over it. Trust me, I'd love to not be afraid of them.

Summerwashout · 24/08/2023 23:09

@Doggymummar. Could you elaborate please eg where is leaflet from.
Council? Rentokil? AND roughly where in the UK are you please.

Oioicaptain · 24/08/2023 23:22

Raid is your friend OP! It's the Novichok of the spider world. A new can can blast a jet of spray around 4m away. One splash and it doesn't matter if the bugger tries to escape...it will only get a few feet before curling up. It also keeps on killing for weeks afterwards. I tend to spray all round my house twice a year just before going on holiday. It's best not to breathe that stuff in. I have six cans in a variety of easy to reach locations in my house. Am never far from a can.

fabmaccawhackyrhumbsaloft · 24/08/2023 23:38

I think that spider is harmless , I prefer those ones to the big old fast house spiders but I wouldn't have killed it , it's just wandering around doing it's spidery business

I've one doing an excellent job of catching flies and clothes moths in the corner of my bedroom , it doesn't go far and I've become quite attached !

Soapyspuds · 24/08/2023 23:42

That is the big body bastard spider.

LunaNorth · 24/08/2023 23:44

We had this visitor in our bedroom the other night. I normally like spiders, but this one was a bit much. DH gently reasoned with it by making it a pie and chips before calling it an Uber evicted it out of the bathroom window.

@LunaNorth pie and chips 😂😂😂 just brilliant!

DrFoxtrot · 25/08/2023 01:59

Why are you trying to identify which spider it is 😆 it's got eight legs, that's enough info. Get it in a glass and throw it outside. Possibly more towards the neighbours side 👀.

Summerwashout · 25/08/2023 07:18

@Oioicaptain

I too have discovered red raid, is it red can you use?
Unfortunately we do have lots it false widow around us and I have a few cans around as well.

False widows can be pretty lethal. And someone had a dangerous one in his garden.

Please don't kill it. Its harmless and won't hurt you. Just leave it alone.

Cowlover89 · 25/08/2023 07:34

Can't remember what it was but it was in Kent.*

Summerwashout · 25/08/2023 07:37

@Cowlover89
How do you kmow someone had a dangerous one? It you know him or in the paper?

No one has died from a spider bite here since 1979. Yes we have dangerous animals (as do other countries) but we've made a deal with ours. We leave them alone and they'll leave us alone. Unfortunately the Aussie magpies and saltwater crocodiles refused to sign the agreement which isn't surprising since they're dickheads but we keep out of their way so it's all good!

This chap is living in the downstairs loo. He’s a real gent, he hides every time I go for a pee!👍
