Is there anything more humbling than seeing yourself in the self-checkout camera?

I sashay out of the house feeling like Margot Robbie and then an hour later catch sight of myself in one of those cameras looking like a bewildered goblin.

I get that theft is clearly a big issue at the self-checkouts, but couldn’t they have considered how detrimental this is to my ego?

Rude.

Our local Tesco has a full length mirror next to the loo. Literally alongside the pan.
I look like a dollop of blancmange when I catch sight of myself, particularly my lard arse.

Our accessible toilet at work has a full length mirror in the cubicle, opposite the toilet, so anyone sitting on the loo is staring straight at themselves. Why? Just why?

I'm not photogenic at the best of times but supermarket cameras in my local Waitrose, the only ones I've encountered so far, and hairdresser's mirrors make me feel like there's no hope.
Sounds like I need to try changing supermarket in hope of a better photo experience!

So that you can see your thigh dough-rolls as they ooze over the loo seat, of course. Who doesn't love that.

The mirror is so people who have stoma bags can look in the mirror while changing it, so they can see they're putting it in the right place

I saw myself on a big presenting screen today as was testing for teams. I wondered what the big hole on top of my head was then realised it was my grey roots. Hate supermarket ones too.

The cameras are never at the best angle.

I started a Teams meeting first today so had the dubious pleasure of seeing myself for three minutes, I resemble a menopausal Jaberwocky, the sun was also glinting off of my moustache and I could see a nostril hair you could knit a scarf with

You need the filter! Or soft focus/beauty or whatever it's called, under video settings. It makes a huge difference, I was annoyed I went for about a year without realising it was there 😂

Possibly even worse are some clothing shop changing room mirrors - rather than try to make you look good, they feel like a House of Horrors mirror that makes me look worse than a bewildered goblin - more like a demented troll!

TroysMammy · 26/08/2023 18:25

I rarely use self checkouts so hadn't noticed them but now I do I'm going to have some fun.

you're absolutely right. looking at yourself in the ones that give you the full 360 view when you're feeling all sweaty and harrassed and nothing you've brought into the changing room looks right, that's a particular life highlight.

These genuinely depress me. They are intrusive, unwelcome and a sad reflection of the impersonal, surveillance society we are creating.

Self service checkouts are bad enough without them. I don't consent to them and think I'm going to vote with my feet against them.

Bewildered goblin though 😂😂😂
