Quite regional, but "Marylebone", a London district, frequently being mispronounced on TV and generally as Marr-ler-bone. Correct pronunciation is "Marry-ler-bone".

Nope. It’s mah-Le-bun.

Conclusion is: kids need to read more books. If you read as a child you learn and remember how to say these basic words and phrases. Sigh

But reading a word doesn't tell you how to pronounce it though.

newbeginnings20 · 23/08/2023 00:29

Getting his and he's mixed up.
Trildren instead of children.
Bagwett instead of baguette.
Brought instead of bought.
Oderments instead of ornaments.

By the way I can't pronounce specific as I have a lisp.

Myhnabird · 23/08/2023 00:29

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 23/08/2023 00:06

Oh god, how are you meant to say it?

Fo-CATCH-ia, but sadly, I've been saying fo-CASH-a all my life. Maybe it's a Canadian thing...

benfolds5 · 23/08/2023 00:30

Whetherspoons
Weatherspoons

AvocadotoastORahouse · 23/08/2023 00:30

@Peajee I've heard jamp or jamped loads - also Scottish. dC's entire primary school seemed to say it for a couple of years. It wa sounds cute and they all grew out of it.

newbeginnings20 · 23/08/2023 00:31

And St pancreas instead of St Pancras.

grumpycow1 · 23/08/2023 00:33

Westminster being pronounced WestminISter
He’s instead of his
Worry for worry instead of wurry - so worry rhymes with lorry (makes me realise the English language is weird though)

newbeginnings20 · 23/08/2023 00:34

Iboofafen instead of ibuprofen.

Inertia · 23/08/2023 00:35

While watching Pointless I discovered that there are apparently different ways to pronounce the 'Bysshe' in Percy Bysshe Shelley. Both children have been taught 2 different pronunciations, and there were 2 more on the programme.

Not sure what's correct now - I always thought it was Bish.

TurqoiseJasper · 23/08/2023 00:38

Anyways instead of anyway.

Mis-chee- vee-yus drives me mad.

I have a friend who pronounces fuchsia fewicksia.

TurqoiseJasper · 23/08/2023 00:39

Ooh also tenderhooks instead of tenterhooks !

WibblyWobblyTimeyWimeyStuff · 22/08/2023 23:24

Flu jag? Confused Has anyone ever actually said that? Flu jag?! (Instead of flu jab?) Never heard that in my life.

It's very much a regional/dialect thing. I have heard it lots in Glasgow/west coast Scotland. Even heard it several times on local news during the Covid vaccination times when the new reader / reporter would talk about jags - so it was officially approved by STV Grin it seems less common on the east side of Scotland I believe.

I once read a theory that it came from to "jaggy thistles" and yes Scottish thistles are sharp!

newbeginnings20 · 23/08/2023 00:41

@benfolds5

I know someone who says wivverspoons.

Apparently a lot of people on this thread can't tell the difference between a mispronounciation and people having different words for things.

No, they are responding to the “just weird words people say” part of the thread title. Did you nod off before you got to the end of it?

Wilson79 · 23/08/2023 00:42

My daughter (3) says ‘let’s take a short c*’ instead of short cut. I tried very hard not to laugh (was very shocked!) and asked where she heard it and she told me Daddy Pig said it. Just a case of mishearing but despite my repeated corrections - she persists! 😬

AvocadotoastORahouse · 23/08/2023 00:42

@WibblyWobblyTimeyWimeyStuff why the Confused face about drawers. Have a read about rhotic and non-rhotic accents before mocking the previous posters please. People have different accents - shock!

Pocodaku · 23/08/2023 00:43

runoutofgoodusernames · 22/08/2023 22:55

Excuse me, how DO you pronounce focaccia? Asking for a friend 🤥

In Australia we say foh KAH chaa (almost like the ‘i’ doesn’t exist, not cheea)

TurqoiseJasper · 23/08/2023 00:47

I'm in Ireland, and there is ad on television for dishwasher capsules, which she pronounces capshools.
I have to stop now :)

newbeginnings20 · 23/08/2023 00:50

Eggsample
Example

One of my team (also a good friend and knows it's in good humour) has a post it stuck to her screen in my handwriting that says 'should HAVE, would HAVE, could HAVE'.

Also 'brought' and 'bought' being used interchangeably Angry

DH gets his S's and Z's confused because English isn't his first language. He likes Sombie movies and Sebras Grin

Is he Norwegian?! My Norwegian friend can’t pronounce the letter Z either as it isn’t really used in any Norwegian words!

AvocadotoastORahouse · 23/08/2023 00:51

highlandcoo · 23/08/2023 00:19

Those of us with Scottish accents often pronounce words more as they are spelled. For example "stairs" - I would say "stay-irs"; same for pair, bear etc.
We don't tend to miss out the final "r" in words like floor or door.
It's not wrong. Just different. You could argue if anything it's more logical.

I love this explanation.

The ad for Surf "perf with surf" sounds so awful to me as they are completely different vowel sounds in my accent.
Pehrf
Suuhrf

newbeginnings20 · 23/08/2023 00:52

Discusting
Disgusting

SittingHereInLimbo · 23/08/2023 00:53

Processeees for processes—common in my neck of the woods, but it's like nails on a blackboard to me.

Also: Caribbean people routinely say "arks" or "ax" for ask.

AppletreesAndHoneybeesAndSnowWhiteTurtleDoves · 23/08/2023 00:55

Skedule

Skewel (for school, Eric Cartman style)
