Them instead of those - them shoes
Pacific instead of specific
Should of instead of should have
Agreemence and agreeance instead of agreement
Chorizmo instead of charisma (the guy at work actually said it, pronounced it like a sausage)

Another one.

“I could care less” instead of couldn’t care less.

That annoys me too. Also makes no sense!!!

UncleHerbie · 22/08/2023 23:30

Westminister instead of Westminster

St Pancreas!

RicherThanYews · 22/08/2023 23:45

Fox leather (should have been faux leather)
Tree-bucket (Should have been trebuchet).

Neither of which I found annoying, I did cry laughing when my boss proudly told me about his beautiful new fox leather sofa and my colleague stroked it and said "ooh" in an admiring way.

DinnaeFashYersel · 22/08/2023 23:45

I annoy my English husband by pronouncing walk and wok identically.

He claims they are different but obviously he is wrong. 😜

WibblyWobblyTimeyWimeyStuff · 22/08/2023 23:45

@DinnaeFashYersel @skilpadde @ElthamLemur @medianewbie I have googled using jag instead of jab, and apparently it IS indeed fairly normal in Scotland to say JAG instead of JAB.

I do apologise! I live 150-ish miles south of the border. And I have never heard it before. Flowers

Thatsshallot1967 · 22/08/2023 23:46

Quite regional, but "Marylebone", a London district, frequently being mispronounced on TV and generally as Marr-ler-bone. Correct pronunciation is "Marry-ler-bone".

Ha ha, so you didn’t believe the actual Scottish people but now that GOOGLE has confirmed it you’ll admit you were a bit too quick to question it!

(only joking, not often you see a mea culpa on MN, thanks 😀)

You scratch an itch. You don't itch an itch.

InWalksBarberalla · 22/08/2023 23:52

My favourite is when people lucky enough to be raised in a environment with high levels of literacy judge those that weren't as lucky.

RicherThanYews · 22/08/2023 23:56

@InWalksBarberalla No judgement here. I have no fucking idea how to use a comma despite multiple attempts at teaching myself, I do however very much like the variety of pronunciations of words, keeps the world interesting.

Poshjock · 22/08/2023 23:57

skilpadde · 22/08/2023 23:31

Jag is in standard usage in Scotland. You'd very rarely hear jab being used here.

It's a perfectly valid term, used not just by your average person on the street but by newsreaders and politicians here.

We don't really care if some people outwith Scotland hate it. Wink

@skilpadde utterly sublime use of “outwith” there 👏🏻👏🏻

I don't think it's about that, it's more about regional differences, surely ?

FFSWhatToDoNow · 22/08/2023 23:58

Haven’t read the full thread by I have colleagues who are convinced the phrase is “it’s a mind field”. 🤦🏻‍♀️

FFSWhatToDoNow · 22/08/2023 23:59

Wallah instead of voila…….

toadasoda · 22/08/2023 23:59

DD: I literally went flying..
DS (10): figuratively. You figuratively went flying, not literally.
DD: ????
DS: sorry I know I'm being pelantic
Me: it's pedantic.
DD: ????
That's when I realised the apple didn't fall far from the tree 😅

To be fair people with dyslexia often find some of these words difficult to pronounce eg Pacific/ specific. It isn't only ignorance, some people genuinely can't work out the order of sounds in syllables and will get them wrong. Dyslexia can produce word pronunciation issues as well as spelling and reading ones. Many older people may never have been diagnosed.

That is absolutely true.

Flu jag? Confused Has anyone ever actually said that? Flu jag?! (Instead of flu jab?) Never heard that in my life.

Everyone I know says flu jag

42coats · 23/08/2023 00:05

VicA Versa instead of vice versa

And solfadeine instead of Solpadeine

Moominy · 23/08/2023 00:06

I've seen 'trail' written instead of 'trial' many times which I always took to be a typo until I once heard someone at a toddler group say "Hello we're here for the 'trail'"😆🙄

FrostieBoabby · 23/08/2023 00:06

I work with someone who thinks they're better than everyone else so it makes me smirk when they come out with "proNOUNciation" rather than pronunciation

I'll maybe correct them one day.
