Them instead of those - them shoes
Pacific instead of specific
Should of instead of should have
Agreemence and agreeance instead of agreement
Chorizmo instead of charisma (the guy at work actually said it, pronounced it like a sausage)

The mistake I keep seeing recently is 'then' instead of 'than' - e.g. 'He's older then me.' It's everywhere, and I'm sure I hadn't come across it until a few years ago!

I probably sound very odd to some people!
Them people, eh? Grin

😂😂😂

OhMyGiddyAuntFanny · 23/08/2023 12:58

I’ve took them instead of I’ve taken them.
I’ve saw it instead of I’ve seen it.
Likkle instead of little.

indyocean · 23/08/2023 12:59

Free instead of three. Firtee free

Fink / think

Fort / thought

No! Your accent doesn't excuse this lazy pronunciation

AvocadotoastORahouse · 23/08/2023 13:30

@highlandcoo when I order bruschetta in my local cafe, the young woman serving always tries to "correct" me to "brew-shetta". She obviously doesn't know that a ch in Italian is a hard k sound. It drives me mad but I would feel very pedantic correcting her.
I might cave one day and tell her. I'm sure I'm not the only customer who winces when she says so.

ArcticLingered · 23/08/2023 13:42

"Haitch" instead of "Aitch" when pronouncing the letter "H". Do the same people say "W" as "Wubble-yew"?

And then a Mumsnet trend is to say "women" instead of "woman" for some reason - not sure if this is due to predictive text?

ArcticLingered · 23/08/2023 13:43

Oh and also sticking a "k" on the end of words that end with "ing" - "sumfink" etc.

I used to think the word Prima-donna was pre Madonna (as in you're such a diva you came even before Madonna). It still makes more sense to me.

I also thought it was pre-Madonna for the same reason, and Prima-Donna doesn't make sense to me.

Already covered haitch upthread - it's also correct. The standard (formal) use in Ireland.

My dad says coleslaw when he means coldsore 😂

I say coleslaw too 🙈

Traceyislivid · 23/08/2023 13:58

Yous instead of you, ‘how are all of yous doing?’ Makes my teeth itch.

Cunt instead of couldn’t

Ha, I say this. Never thought of it as cunt, though, just the way I say couldn't in my accent. A lot of these are just accents. Probably sounds like I'm saying 'could of' but it's actually could've

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/08/2023 14:01

It only doesn't make sense if you don't bother finding out what it actually means!

You should! She clearly has no qualms about 'correcting' you!

She’s probably not correcting you, just repeating the order back and using her usual way of saying it.

Long but interesting. From "haitch has the pedigree..." onwards especially relevant. As is the part about "haitch" being standard in some Englishes.

Haitch or aitch? How a humble letter was held hostage by historical haughtiness

An unspoken class war has long been waged around the pronunciation of the letter ‘h’ – is it haitch or aitch? Despite a snobbish leaning to the latter, haitch makes more sense

Read a holiday trip report yesterday where a family had to debark from an aircraft. You disembark form an aircraft you debark a dog. 😄

I-bur-yFen or Ibubrufen instead of ibuprofen. Makes my teeth itch.

I don’t know if it’s a scouse thing, but several scouse friends of mine call it ‘brufen’. I don’t know why if annoys me so much!
