Another parking thread (with diagram!)

Just want to find out if I would be unreasonable to report my neighbour’s car? Sorry for the long post but don’t want to drip feed!

A bit of background (I have attached a diagram which hopefully makes sense!) we live in a small cul-de-sac where every house has an allocated parking space and a garage (although these aren’t right next to the houses for most residents), and there is also quite a bit of public street parking available.

A neighbour has a car that has not moved for over a year and is presumably not running - it has had no MOT since last August and no tax since January. It is not parked in an allocated space, but on the public street. It’s actually parked in quite an inconvenient place for a lot of residents as the front of the car is overhanging the driveway/lane that goes round to the blocks of garages and the road is quite narrow so it makes it a bit difficult to manoeuvre around it. It’s also parked in a way that makes it impossible to get out of my allocated space and up the road without going up on the kerb as the turning space is massively reduced.

The owner of the car is a bit odd - he doesn’t open the door if you knock (when we know he is definitely home) and ignores anyone who tries to talk to him in the street. Another neighbour has popped a note through the door as they are having the same problem, which has also been ignored.

So my question is am I a horrible person if I report his car to the council/police because it’s parked on a public road with no tax and MOT?

I’d report it.

SoundsOfNature · 22/08/2023 15:40

He has ignored the note so I would report it. It is causing problems due to where it is parked. Fantastic diagram by the way, top marks.

Pinkywoo · 22/08/2023 15:41

Yes I'd report it, especially as it's making life difficult for people to get to their garages.

Great diagram!
Absolutely report. It's anonymous and the police will deal with it. Worst case he'll tax it etc but will have to move it to get an MOT, at which point a sensible strategy would be for a neighbour to park correctly in that similar spot he's been occupying.

Pinkywoo · 22/08/2023 15:42

Yes 10/10 for diagram skills OP , and you have very neat handwriting!

WhineWhineWhineWINE · 22/08/2023 15:53

He's been asked nicely and chosen to ignore. Report it, he's had ample opportunity to be reasonable.

SinnerBoy · 22/08/2023 15:54

Seconded on the excellent diagram skills!

I'd report it anonymously, if it's not taxed, or MOT'd, it also won't be insured. It's very highly illegal and the Police will come and remove it.

Tinkerbyebye · 22/08/2023 15:55

10/10 for the diagram!

yes I would report to your council as an abandoned untaxed non mot and I assume uninsured car. I would also report to the police and the dvla

between them they should remove it

Badbudgeter · 22/08/2023 16:03

Nice diagram. I’d report if untaxed / no mot. If he doesn’t want to tax it he can sorb it and keep it in the garage / on his private parking.

HolliDays · 22/08/2023 16:07

Excellent diagram.

Wouldn't you struggle even if someone was to park there correctly? Or are you suggesting that you can't use the small lane to the garages properly to get the swing?

F1ymetothetoon · 22/08/2023 16:08

Beautiful diagram 👏 and yep report to dvla/police/council due to no tax, insurance or mot.

HolliDays · 22/08/2023 16:11

How on earth does slightly orange cross park / unpark their car in this scenario?

ifonly4 · 22/08/2023 16:12

If you can't discuss it with him, report it. If he has allocated parking and/or garage, there's no reason it can't be moved to one of those positions, even if broken down, I'm sure generous neighbours would help push it into position.

It's not acceptable to keep bumping onto kerb, could damage your vehicle, also pavement is meant for pedestrians.

Nottodaty · 22/08/2023 16:20

We had a similar issue. A car parked in a similar place. After two months it had two flat tyres and not taxed just sat there, causing a issue with parking.

In the end one of the residents raised a request on the local council website. Within two weeks the owners arranged a pick up truck and it was removed.

We didn’t know who it belonged to, but having the council deal with it was a much better solution.

I felt bad but it was causing parking issues and didn’t look nice - an abandoned car, flat tyres.

Until he parked it up and left it there, people rarely parked there as it’s not really outside anyone’s front door, so just the occasional visitor - if it was 2-3 feet further back I could swing round without clipping the kerb!

With great difficulty - she has to go back and forth a couple of times to get out!

Thanks for the comments folks - I will report it without feeling too guilty (just worry he’s going to get a fine!)

And thank you for the lovely feedback on the diagram - I know from reading previous parking posts that everyone wants a good diagram, so spent ages on it whilst in a very boring Teams meeting this morning!

OP, we like a parking thread and I hope it's sorted soon. It'd be great if you could let us know, what happens though!

Pinceywincey · 22/08/2023 17:15

I will pop back with an update if anything happens!

Iliketulips · 22/08/2023 19:28

No decent person would leave their car parked like that, and personally I wouldn't risk it as I wouldn't want it hit. If you're owner won't discuss, only option is to report. Ideal scenario is that a few neighbours do the same with a week or so.

Beachesandcream · 22/08/2023 20:03

We reported a neighbours car that they had left outside our house for a year! Visitors / tradesmen could never park outside our house. When we realised it had no MOT or tax we reported it. We came home one day and a notice had been put on the car. 10 mins later neighbour was trying to start it so he could put in his driveway (where it should always have been as there was ample room for 2 cars and a space outside on the road for another but they chose to dump outside our house instead) . It took a lot of effort to move it and a very panicked neighbour who thought he was going to get a fine! An unsafe car should never be left on a public road - we live on a steep hill so if the handbrake had failed etc it could have caused serious damage / injury.

TicTacNicNak · 22/08/2023 20:13

OP, you are a shining example - providing a neat and easily understandable diagram, and you've committed to come back with an update if anything changes. Wish. Ore posters were like you.

Please don't feel guilty that the neighbour may get a fine. Sounds as though several of you have tried to get this resolved politely, but he's refused to engage. Anything that happens will be all on him.

RedDoughnut · 22/08/2023 22:22

I think MumsnetHQ should give a diagram of the week award out.

Full marks OP

Pinceywincey · 22/08/2023 22:49

I’m really feeling the diagram love here! Car is now reported so stay tuned……!
