Please could you have a look at this? Ground floor plan. If I moved to this house, where could I put a cat flap?

Jimmy - catflap in upstairs bathroom??

Cheezncrackers it would mean leaving bifolds from lounge to kitchen open. Wc - she'd be able to get upstairs and bother me 🙄

No it wouldn't. You just close the two doors to the hall and voila! Cat is contained in open plan area.

i.e. close door from kitchen to hall and from lounge to hall.

Florence4170 · 20/08/2023 19:49

The wavy lines are bifolds, from lounge into sunroom, kitchen into sunroom, sunroom out into garden. Catflap into lounge would mean she would only have access into sunroom via bifold catflap or open bifold. See what I mean?
This is so useful. Thank you

Why not just close the kitchen and lounge doors to the hall?

that way cat can be in kitchen, utility, sunroom and lounge, but not pester you upstairs.

Florence4170 · 20/08/2023 21:12

She won't be able to get outside though.

I'm thinking maybe give her access into sunroom from utility room, then access outside through left hand wall of sunroom. Sorry, can't seem to attach photos.

I meant to quote this in my reply.

Put your cat flap in the sunroom window then close the two doors giving her access to the cat flap and no access to upstairs

Florence4170 · 20/08/2023 21:19

Actually, I think it might affect the workings of the bifolds if I put a cat flap in them, it would be a little bit proud I think.
I'm leaning towards free rein of utility and kitchen, cat flap from utility into sunroom and hole in the wall one on left hand side of sunroom. She can go where she likes in the day, but she needs to go to bed at night 😀

Sunroom has 3 walls of bifolds and one actual wall.

Just remember cats do not like cat flaps that go out through a wall/window that is exposed on both sides. They dont feel safe. I put my cat flap into an outside wall which has another wall to one side so they only have to look one way when exiting it.

Lavenderosemary · 20/08/2023 21:25

We have a flap through the dining room wall into our conservatory, then a second flap through the conservatory wall. Works well, and if we want the cats kept out of the house for any reason, they still have access to the conservatory.

ReviewingTheSituation · 20/08/2023 21:33

I'd put it in the kitchen wall on the LHS external wall.

Depends what furniture is going in that corner.

We have a wall cat flap and it works well.

Lindy2 · 20/08/2023 21:45

Cat flap through the sunroof wall.

Close the lounge and kitchen doors at night. Cat can be in the sunroof, lounge, kitchen or utility room and access the cat flap, but can't get to the stairs.

The vast majority of cat flaps are surely exposed both left and right? This makes no sense at all! As they exit the cat flap (regardless of whether it's in a door or wall) they decide which way to go. They can look left/right if they want to.

Amethys · 20/08/2023 22:47

Can’t you shut her in the lounge and put a catflap in the wall there?

Florence4170 · 21/08/2023 08:27

She could be shut in the lounge but I she's used to having access to food and water all the time. Don't fancy having a cat feeding station in the lounge 🤢

Even by putting catflap at far end of the kitchen she would be coming out at the front of the house. I'd like her to use the back garden.

She's a cat. Regardless of what you'd like her to do, she'll do what she wants to do!

Re-reading your original post, you say the sunroom has a wall on the left. So why not just put it in that wall? (if it being at the back of the house is important).

Florence4170 · 21/08/2023 09:46

that Would mean also putting it in the bifold, which I would rather not do. Yes, she will do what she wants but she is 16 and has only been spotted at the front of this house twice 😀, so I’m hoping she’ll continue the tradition. She really doesn’t go far, she’s a bit of a home girl, like me.

Sorry I’m trying to answer invidual points but I can’t work out how to mention individual posters without typing their names out or quoting them, which is tedious for everyone else.
Thanks so much for your thoughts.

@Florence4170 use the @ symbol to mention people by name.

Florence4170 · 22/08/2023 12:14

@Cheeesus thanks! I have been on Mumsnet for donkey's years and never known how to do it 🤗

@Cheeesus testing. Blimey, this should go on one of those helpful tips threads

We've had two cat flaps fitted in the walls of different houses in our time and the beauty of this is that you can choose the ideal height for your cat. We considered having the front door fitted with a cat flap, but I'm glad we didn't as I've since realised the cats would have to stretch too far to reach where it would have seen fitted (a different style maybe be different).

Some sun rooms tend to be cooler in the summer (depending on type of roof), so bearing in mind heat can be lost through the cat flap, I'd chose it to go from a cooler room, so would chose sun room for that reason.

OP, do you have a photo of your cat? I'm sure most people posting of your thread would love to see him or her😀!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/08/2023 13:48

Do you really need 3x walls of bifold?
