Please make me feel better about my Voldemort cake... I spent three days on it and everything disintegrated in the humidity today

Humidity is 98% here today, really hot and damp - I left my fondant models to dry overnight (for ds2's birthday cake) and this morning it was carnage - heads falling off, cracks, bits melting everywhere. Have tried everything today to dry them out but it's been a nightmare, the Voldemort figure has sunk so he looks like a fat goblin, and Harry's hair is basically liquid. Am quite gutted really (autistic and a toxic perfectionist)

DH says it's fine, nobody but me knows what it was supposed to look like, and it's a cake ffs. So this is a shameless bid for attention, but please don't accuse me of "stealth boasting" because I'm not. I blubbed when Voldemort's head fell off.

It’s wonderful. But seriously, he’s 2. He’ll never remember it

AmazingSnakeHead · 18/08/2023 22:55

I'm pretty sure that's a cake for her second son, not for her two year old haha, can you imagine?? Mine would be traumatized for life!

Greensleeves · 18/08/2023 22:55

I'm not being disingenuous (what a nasty thing to say), I've genuinely been very upset about it, there's a thread from earlier today where I was asking for advice when it all fell apart. And several people have agreed that the figures aren't great!

Do you have pictures of it from before so we can compare?

Greensleeves · 18/08/2023 22:58

DS2 isn't 2, he's 19, has been through a rough time lately with illness and has been listening to HP audiobooks to help with his anxiety and insomnia at night. He's just hit the second half of Deathly Hallows and the cake is meant to represent the forest scene where Voldemort hits Harry with Avada Kedavra.

Well, that was bloody rude of them.

In kindness, it honestly doesn't matter if you don't think it's great though or if strangers online think it could be better. The only thing that is important is will you son like the cake, the answer to this question is yes of course he will unless he's a very spoilt child indeed. Therefore no matter how sad you feel about it you just have to remember your feelings are not the ones which are important here, his are.

I think it's very apt for Voldemort to transmute from tall and elegant. It's magic showing his inner ugliness.

Well then I think it’s a shame you feel so negatively about it. Most non professional cake bakers would be thrilled with that cake. I’ve seen a heck of a lot worse on Great British Bake Off.

Although I did make a really great cake for one of my sons he didn’t like it as he thought it was too scary. For my other son I made a minion cake, it was very much less than perfect, a bit of a mess really but he absolutely loved it.

Your son will love it, unless he too is a perfectionist so he may be as critical of it as you are 😁

OriginalBin · 18/08/2023 23:04

Can I just say I love you chose a ‘Voldemort triumphant, Harry apparently dead’ moment to immortalise in icing.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/08/2023 23:04

Seriously OP this is an awesome cake! Please don't get rid of it

Wanna see a disaster? I'll just leave this here...

Lol yours is fab and the kids will never pay that much attention to detail.

I tried to make my son a Minecraft cake once, didn’t work! So tried to make a football cake, that didn’t work! So settled on Angry birds, still not sure it worked 🤣🤣

Honestly op, I totally get it: I’m a cake perfectionist. But trust us - the proportions look intentional: to me it has an anime vibe - a slightly gentler version of a genuinely terrifying moment in the book - which I think really works. I bet your Ds will absolutely love it. Let yourself accept that what you’ve done really is more than good enough.

Oblomov23 · 18/08/2023 23:13

Seriously impressive. What's the problem?

Hawkins009 · 18/08/2023 23:13

Greensleeves · 18/08/2023 22:13

It's really not. Voldemort was tall and elegant originally, he looks like a squat bullfrog in these photos!

Either way, it's still an excellent designed cake

golddustwomen · 18/08/2023 23:29

Amazing, I want one!!

Ohyesreally · 18/08/2023 23:30

Wow!! I think it's amazing 😍

Celia24 · 18/08/2023 23:37

OP you're being overly critical of your own work. As someone who loves HP and knows this scene i'd thrilled with it!

CallieQ · 18/08/2023 23:45

Showing off!!!!!

Haven’t seen that thread but if she posted as she did here insisting it was a disgusting mucky mess and wanted people to agree with her and so they did, that isn’t rude. Someone also agreed with OP in this thread and the Op liked and wanted that response.

Give yourself more credit - that’s pretty decent! I’d be chuffed if I make a cake like that!
