Please make me feel better about my Voldemort cake... I spent three days on it and everything disintegrated in the humidity today

Humidity is 98% here today, really hot and damp - I left my fondant models to dry overnight (for ds2's birthday cake) and this morning it was carnage - heads falling off, cracks, bits melting everywhere. Have tried everything today to dry them out but it's been a nightmare, the Voldemort figure has sunk so he looks like a fat goblin, and Harry's hair is basically liquid. Am quite gutted really (autistic and a toxic perfectionist)

DH says it's fine, nobody but me knows what it was supposed to look like, and it's a cake ffs. So this is a shameless bid for attention, but please don't accuse me of "stealth boasting" because I'm not. I blubbed when Voldemort's head fell off.

What's wrong with it? It's amazing!

I see what you mean, especially on Voldemort and his arm looks out of proportion compared to his squat body. (Yes, I also have issues) Not being mean, just that I hear you and understand, especially if before was as close to perfect as you wanted it to be.

It still looks pretty darn amazing and a million times better than anything I could ever make. But I do get you.Flowers

WandaWomblesaurus · 18/08/2023 22:32

It looks INCREDIBLE.

Stop being so bloody disingenuous. That's an amazing cake and you know it.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 18/08/2023 22:33

It looks fab!

My mum made me a Legend of Zelda cake which cracked down the side but then I had a bombable wall 😂Zelda fans will understand this!

ArabiaSpainRedLime · 18/08/2023 22:34

INCREDIBLE 😍🤩😍🎉🎉🎉

Thank you! That's exactly it, he's out of proportion and just nothing like as imposing and elegant as he should be. Oddly comforting that you acknowledge it (I definitely have issues)

Anyone’s first reaction is going to be ‘wow’ so please don’t worry. I particularly like the snake. I do sort of see what you mean about Voldemort shrinking and being a bit squat but you only see that once you’ve pointed it out. I’d love to have your talent - my cakes really are rubbish. One year it looked like someone had vomited sprinkles on my daughter’s cake- it looked really bad. Another year my husband had a go and managed to make a snot coloured cake which no-one wanted to eat.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 18/08/2023 22:43

Is this what you used for inspiration, or similar to what it looked before?

Btw, your face detailing, is miles better than this one.

About 60 years ago my mum made a rocket cake for my brother. It was hidden in the cupboard. We heard a thud. It had fallen over.

My brother and I still laugh about it now.

Glittertwins · 18/08/2023 22:44

It still looks amazing, nobody would have known what it looked like before the humidity set in. I know I couldn't have done anything anywhere close to looking as fantastic as it looks on the photo now

ChristmasCrumpet · 18/08/2023 22:44

I know what you mean. It's a really good cake. But you have the ability to make things that have the x-factor, and this no longer does.

I get it, I'm the same. I don't make cakes but I do make other things. I'd never say it IRL but I'm happy to on here - the level of detail and flair puts my items well above local competition which is all of the same "nice enough" standard.

It's because you know what it could have looked like. Give yourself a break, and accept these things happen, because to everyone else, it's a great cake.

RosaGallica · 18/08/2023 22:44

“Someone left the cake out in the rain… I don’t think that I cantake it, cos it took so long to bake it, and I’ll never have the recipe again… oh noooo”

Sorry, heard the song yesterday.

AthenaPopodopolous · 18/08/2023 22:46

It looks awful! Like a horror scene from Harry Potter, are you sure this is for a two year old son? Other than that it’s awesome and macabre all in one.

SensitiveB · 18/08/2023 22:47

Oh gosh you are insanely talented - I adore this and I don’t mean to dismiss any disappointment you felt but it’s just lovely ! I haven’t read the thread but wish I could follow every cake you make and your DS is very lucky !

HarrietJet · 18/08/2023 22:49

That is stunning, op.

chubbachub · 18/08/2023 22:49

I do think Harry looks like he's had a fall on the way out of a nightclub after a few too many but the fat goblin is good

Jomummy1013 · 18/08/2023 22:50

What an extraordinary cake. To me, looks flawless. ❤️

Yes 🙄

Why not just say you made an amazing cake and you’d like to show everyone as you’re so proud of it?

If this cake disappoints you then I’m guessing you’re not just a bog standard home cake maker as, unless you’re a professional, anyone would be proud of that cake.

I made a really good cake once for my son and honestly I’d love to show it off on here, I’m still proud of it fifteen years later 😁
