So, say in a hundred years time. Where do you think might be safest to avoid the worst of the fires, floods, extreme heat etc ?

I work in the field of sustainability so spend my working days thinking about this stuff. I don't normally engage in much discussion outside of work on the matter because I need to disengage for my own well-being.

Summerhillsquare · 17/08/2023 17:14

Norway.

Lonelycrab · 17/08/2023 17:17

New Zealand would be my choice.

They've been saying the Maldives will disappear under water for DECADES and it hasn't happened.

So it's clearly a very safe place to live.

Yeah it is happening.

heldinadream · 17/08/2023 17:21

@MichaelAndEagle my DH works in sustainability. I'm a retired psychotherapist, so my working life was steeped in people's distress on all subjects.
Anyway we don't avoid it here, but we don't go on and on because we both know so what would be the point? Mental health protection always a priority.

Canada’s fire issues is more about having underfunded forestry than climate change. Services were centralized, so it’s taking longer to get to the sites, they are allowing bigger spread before intervention, and the equipment is outdated. People are working in office type settings vs on the ground. The ground crews are not local and are unfamiliar with the back roads and ranchers.
calling it climate related shuts down the discussion.

The moon

💞 This. Or Titan, another moon.

'Climate change' is just a doomsday cult that's been prophesying the end of the world every decade for decades. The world's been many different temperatures etc in the past. We'll be absolutely fine, like we were in other times in history when they had other temperatures.

coxesorangepippin · 17/08/2023 18:36

I'm thinking Northern Canada, but not too far north

We are in deep shit. A lot of these places that will be supposedly inhabitable are bare rock under the current ice. Good luck growing food without soil.

That's not what Edward Struzik, who has written a number of books on the environment including two specifically on the threat from fire, said five minutes ago on C4 news.

But a 1 in 5 chance of a megaquake the likes of which could rip the south island through the middle over the next 50 years. Pretty though.

And up rises Zealandia from the waves, so still the best place to be.

IHateWasps · 17/08/2023 19:53

New Zealand? Really? Not that I think that anywhere is immune.

Turquioseblue · 18/08/2023 01:12

Look up Global Adaptation Initiative - New Zealand among the top countries best equipped to deal with climate change - they look at arable land, water supply etc. I have a few friends who have already moved there from Australia, where I am.

Turquioseblue · 18/08/2023 01:13

You're not going to escape climate change - so best to look at the countries best positioned to deal with it.

lovewoola · 18/08/2023 01:27

And when exactly, in human history were temperatures 2C warmer than they are now?

Conspiracy theories are comfort blankets.

@EmilyBrontesGhost net zero means not adding any more CO2, not taking it all out.
