Why is this not common knowledge?

I've always known about PMT and I'm aware in myself that I get a little irritable in the few days before my period but recently I have noticed that 10 days before my period I honestly feel emotionally unstable. Minor things will make me cry.

I had a little Google and came across this graph which very clearly shows why I struggle at that time, there's a big drop in the hormones that make you feel good. Am I the only one who wasn't aware of this? Why is PMT such a more known thing than the bigger dip in hormones we get right after we ovulate?

I'm thinking about going back on the depo injection purely to feel more stable. (I don't need it for birth control reasons) I never used to get PMT on it and now I'm thinking it will help with my issue mid cycle. Has anyone done that?

Do you think I should be concerned about this new difficulty I have for 3 days of the month?

Why is this not common knowledge?

I think this is common knowledge.

MiddleParking · 16/08/2023 22:17

Common knowledge in our house let me tell you. Probably all the neighbours houses too 😂

HarrietJet · 16/08/2023 22:19

It is fairly common knowledge.

WtfHormones · 16/08/2023 22:21

@HarrietJet @MiddleParking common knowledge that the few days after ovulation is just as bad if not worse than PMT?

How did I miss this then?

WtfHormones · 16/08/2023 22:22

It doesn't even have a name, does it?...post ovulation tension? POT?

OP posts:
CandyflossKaren · 16/08/2023 22:25

Yes I think it's common

The ovulation pain too. I always felt it more than period pains!

WtfHormones · 16/08/2023 22:27

@CandyflossKaren ah see I've never had ovulation pain.

I wonder what else I don't know that's common knowledge 🤔🤔🤔

It's common knowledge here.

I always suffered more that time than I did with PMT.

But at least I knew what it was, so I learned to develop my own coping strategy for those few days.

WildFlowerBees · 16/08/2023 22:30

I track my cycle and I am very aware of what is my pmt and what isn't. I have learnt to deal with my symptoms, if I hadn't bad things would happen to those around me 😬

WtfHormones · 16/08/2023 22:31

@WhateverMate I feel like a teenager again! Having to get used to my hormones.

DH knew this before me 🤣 joking aside, misogyny. I’ll leave it there!

Justhereforaibu1 · 16/08/2023 22:32

No I didn't know that OP. Can't say I suffer though, I feel worse the week after a period, migraines, dizziness and feeling sick. Oh the joys.

WtfHormones · 16/08/2023 22:32

@WildFlowerBees yes I track my cycle and I manage my PMT better than if I didn't know about it. But this day 16 thing I've only just realised in the last 3 months.

Wait until you get to peri-meno. You need to change the scale on the graph…!

ItsNotRocketSalad · 16/08/2023 22:36

PMS can also stand for premenstrual sydrome, which is what you're describing. I agree with others that it's common knowledge.

I thought it always stood for that?

Does the p also stand for something else? Post menstrual?

@WtfHormones I didn't know this easier.

I've always had fairly light/short/easy periods though, and emotionally / hormonally I don't think I've ever really paid much attention to or tracked patterns.

What are the hormones that make you feel good? Estrogen?

Think I'm heading towards perimenopause so should try and pay more attention to it all.

Rainallnight · 16/08/2023 22:42

I’ve never heard of that but then I’m also quite sceptical of the whole idea of PMT

MrsALambert · 16/08/2023 22:49

I’m far worse around ovulation than just before my period. The older I get the worse im getting as well. Joyous

Justgonefishing · 16/08/2023 22:52

That graph is actually quite misleading ,you will see better representations of what progesterone does over the course of the cycle , it’s the luteal phase that most people have issues with pmt in.

TheChosenTwo · 16/08/2023 22:52

I have PCOS and no regular cycle or pattern whatsoever so it’s a constant guessing game to me if I’m in a furious mood because of this or because of a justifiable reason!
I don’t know anything about that graph, but my ovulation pain is crippling.

maidmarianne · 16/08/2023 22:52

I used to get this quite badly when I was younger. One day a month I just felt miserable and wanted to stay in. I knew it was at the same part of my cycle every month, but no, I didn't know anyone else who had this and I didn't know it was a "thing". I only heard of pmt as being the few days leading up to a period, and I didn't get that.

MuggleMe · 16/08/2023 22:54

I always get a weird burst of energy and anger during ovulation (plus the pain).

Squarepegroundholee · 16/08/2023 22:58

Look up pmmd it will blow your mind !
I only knew about the graph/ dip as I have pmmd

Justgonefishing · 16/08/2023 22:59

This is a better description of the cycle and mood issues related to it….you may be more sensitive to the first dip in oestrogen after ovulation than others https://drbrighten.com/how-hormones-affect-mood-throughout-menstrual-cycle/. The depot isn’t the best form of contraception as you get older, you may be better looking at alternatives and trialling something like Angus castus to help with pmt and cycle regulation

How Hormones Affect Mood Throughout Your Menstrual Cycle

Your menstrual cycle can affect your mood. Hormone balance is key to feeling better before, during, and after your period. Exercise and mood-supporting supplements may also be helpful.

I literally mark 10 days before my period on my calendar every month so that I can remind myself that I’m not actually going insane and I don’t actually want to leave DH, quit my job, destroy my relationships or move to the other side of the world!

It’s getting worse now I’m in my early 40s but mine (PMDD) lasts for a full 10 days until my period comes. Just when I’m on the edge of the abyss, the negative self- talk howling in my ears and the insomnia cranked up to maximum, I come on and all is well again… Until the next month.

I did take Sertraline for it which helped but I came off it to get my libido back.
