Manchester visit?

Looking at going to Manchester with the kids going to do Legoland discovery. We fancy staying on the outskirts but are unsure of where. We have narrowed it down to -
Chorton cum hardy
West didsbury
Oldham
Farnworth

We will be going into Manchester but would be nice if there was local restaurants and parks/walks nearby.

Can anyone give me any thoughts on these areas, are they safe? Child friendly?

Lego land discovery is at the Trafford Centre I believe rather than In Manchester so factor that in.
I would not recommend you stay in any of those areas

littleripper · 16/08/2023 09:51

Charlton is lovely 😊 great parks, cafes and very child friendly

cherryassam · 16/08/2023 09:52

As PP says, Legoland Discovery is at the Trafford Centre rather than in the centre.

If you want to stay on the outskirts, I’d think about Sale or Altrincham and then you can still get the tram or train into the city centre, they’re fine for driving to the Trafford centre, and they’re lovely areas with restaurants / parks etc

Why not are they rough or rowdy?

You could look at a hotel near the Trafford Centre or Salford Quays. You're then on the tram line to both Manchester and Quays/Trafford Centre. Check out Metrolink website for the line information.

Oldham is pretty grim

Chorlton has 3 surrounding parks and easy access to a nature reserve - Chorlton ees. It's easy to get into town on the metro, you will have to change to get the metro to the Trafford Centre. However.... there are a lot of bars and not really any places to stay - I'm guessing there are air bnb's but you might get one in the dodge part.of Chorlton. Which you wouldn't know where that is unless you live there!

BeeBelle16 · 16/08/2023 17:26

Don’t stay in Oldham.

Didbsury and Chorlton are both nice and on the tram, but they’re not really places people stay, much more suburban.

Could you afford a hotel in the centre, or Salford Quays?

StopStartStop · 16/08/2023 19:39

I live in Oldham, and wouldn't recommend it for a holiday, though I love it dearly.
Saddleworth is your best bet. Scenic. Look at 'Saddleworth Captured' on fb.

CharlyBird · 16/08/2023 19:41

I used to live in Farnworth and wouldn't recommend it. It was fairly rough in places and the traffic between there and Trafford park can be hell.

millymae · 16/08/2023 19:42

May have left it too late to reply but have a look at Sale - there’s a travel lodge which is fine if you just want a base and if you are driving the Trafford Centre is only minutes away.
The centre of Sale has plenty of restaurant choices and is on the Altrincham to Manchester tram line

Yarsvi · 16/08/2023 19:43

Prestwich could be a good shout for you. There's a Premier Inn and it has lots of nice restaurants. You can catch the tram or bus into the city centre, about 15 minutes journey. St Mary's Park and giant Heaton Park there. If you like good markets, you could also catch tram in the opposite direction to Bury, which has an excellent market.

Yarsvi · 16/08/2023 19:45

Legoland is a bit of a let down in my opinion, lots of better things to do in Manchester.

Gymmum82 · 16/08/2023 19:47

Don’t stay in Oldham or farnworth. Chorlton and didsbury are nice.

Lego discovery is a huge disappointment though so I wouldn’t bother travelling to Manchester just to go there

Lollypop701 · 16/08/2023 19:48

Chorlton green is ok… and it looks like it’s that area nor chorlton cum hardy. it’s not near a tram line so you’d need a car although the buses are ok. . Lots of independent pubs/restaurants but it’s aimed at adults more than families imo

Lollypop701 · 16/08/2023 19:48

Oh and agree not Oldham or farnworth

LlynTegid · 16/08/2023 19:53

Agree about Salford Quays.

Check football fixtures as if Manchester United are playing at home there will be the hordes of glory seekers visiting the area. Made that mistake once, never again.

Bichonmum · 16/08/2023 19:54

Not Farnworth either.

Worsley is nice but you'd need to drive to the Trafford Centre and that stretch of motorway can be busy.

Salford Quays or Sale so your on the tram lines would be good then you don't have to drive everywhere.

Ilikewinter · 16/08/2023 19:56

Id try and stay near the Trafford centre, its either a premier inn or holiday inn thats right near by (that I can remember!), cant comment on Legoland but theres always Dinosaur crazy golf!..... and lots of places to eat of course. You can get the tram into Manchester.

lunar1 · 16/08/2023 19:57

Lego land isn't a day out, it's a couple of hours at most, the sea life next door is an hour if you get a drink.

Ilikewinter · 16/08/2023 19:57

Oh and as recommend, 100% check the football fixtures!
