So I just ventured onto Tiktok…and now my brain is going to explode

The videos were all about 5G poisoning our children as part of a government plan to take them away
prepping for end times
how to scavenge for food in end times
insisting we all take our children out of schools

and about 76 million other terrifying things.

is this what it’s like now?! I just used to watch cat videos and book reviews

I’m feeling like that about Mumsnet at the moment. Every second thread I see is about doom and gloom. I don’t think it’s helping me very much and I think I might need to flounce for my own sake.

I have cats, home hacks, yoga, plants, orchestras and attractive lesbians on mine. Once you let the algorithm know you, it's a very positive place.

Mine is craft stuff, baking, funny skits and make up reviews! You have to search and like videos a lot. Also hold down a video you don't like and click "not interested" to send a clear message! Then you should get fewer videos like that. If you just scroll and kind of half watch everything, the algorithm gets more and more off as it tries to find something you might like ime.

It throws random stuff at you to start with - anything you watch or engage with it’ll send you more of, if you skip past or hold and click not interested then you’ll get less of that.

It does assume you’re interested in anything you watch to the end, so sometimes you do end up in funny wee pockets - took me weeks to get out of fat rendering tiktok 😐🤣

I’ve never been on tik-tok but I’ve seen a lot of this on Instagram.

Under posts about covid or other news about diseases there are lots of anti-vaxers and tin foil hat wearers.

Its very worrying because young people are so easily manipulated and if they’re seeing stuff like that then they could start believing it too.

I watch Suzy Edge! Highly recommend.

I use tiktok for all sorts. I love the excel videos, when I am trying to remember how to do something. Decorating/DIY tips, embroidery and animals.

I don't get conspiracy videos. I occasionally ally get tarot videos and if you watch one then you get loads. But I just click not interested and it stops.

My tiktok is full of animals, music, clips of funny podcasts, things from my home country, cooking, good places to run and hike, comedians.

Search the things you want to see, follow people that interest you, scroll past other stuff and you’ll see a lot less of what you don’t want to see.

Saying that, I was never interested in the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard stuff and got so much pro Depp stuff when their court case was happening. I think he’s disgusting so did use tiktok less for a while.

My fyp is currently full of people who are in love with inanimate objects. That'll teach me to watch a video about a woman who's in love with the Eiffel Tower 😂

I love my tiktok feed and have done from the beginning. I get comedians, dancing, little kids doing cute things, ducks crossing roads. I've been on it a year and have never seen a single horrible thing.

According to the algorithm I'm an autistic lesbian....I actually started to question myself at one point. Lately it seems to have shifted to funny animal videos and crafts so that's a relief.

When you've newly registered you get crap but if you skip the dross then the algorithm works out what you like. You have to actively swipe when the 💩 appears or they think you like it.
I get content like cooking, funny dogs and clips from old tv shows like Desperate housewives. If you search for a topic you like then watch a few videos about that subject then hopefully you'll get more of that kind of thing.

Stay off tik tok then, I'm on IG and I don't know why they like promoting glamorous model type people... I'm like meh 🫤 I'm not even active on it or looking for followers or to be followed just like checking out content that might appeal to me.

Lots of straight women are on lesbian tiktok, my theory is, you don’t watch the young half dressed men, so it tries you with more niche men thirst traps and when you don’t watch those either the algorithm goes....lesbian?... and the lesbians are usually saying mildly interesting things rather than just doing thirst traps so you don’t immediately swipe away and tiktok goes, aha, I was right, lesbian

Mine was a strange mixture of Horrible Histories parodies (I may be slightly obsessed with HH) and asmr cleaning videos. Since I’ve followed ds, all of a sudden I get ww2 dross. I suspect the algorithm has seen me interact with ds and now thinks im a 12 year old boy with a ww2 fixation!
