Liverpool mini break with DS 14

SomersetBrie · 12/08/2023 12:35

Visiting Liverpool in a couple of weeks for a two night mini break for DS birthday. Just the two of us.
Neither of us have ever been, what would you recommend we do there? Interesting affordable restaurants would also be good to know.

I'd like to take ferry across the Mersey but beyond that no concrete plans.
We're both quite relaxed, don't mind museums/galleries but not top of the list.
Staying centrally. Really looking forward to it.

The Baltic market is a great place for lunch, it's a bunch of stalls set round an eating area, so you can order different things and eat together.

Reallynotoverreacting · 12/08/2023 12:57

Red brick market was so interesting and quirky, Albert Dock was great ,there's loads of free museums, we did the world museum and a show at the planetarium, the bus tour is good too.
There's so many eating places, the olive branch was great for kebab, and Pho was amazing, we all got the Ramen.
200° for amazing coffee and buns.
Made in Merseyside for brunch/lunch.

There's a new entertainment centre in Liverpool One with go karts, golf, VR, bowling etc. My teen was impressed:

If you're heading to Baltic Market, Arcains is also fun - retro and modern arcade games all on free play. I especially like Sonic on the Sega Megadrive!

Quirky Quarter, an optical illusion museum has also gone down well with mine.

I absolutely love Liverpool. Moose coffee does the best pancakes.. I really enjoyed a cycle tour. And the Shiverpool ghost walk is really corney but good fun.
I love the cathedrals.

Preciousprincess75 · 12/08/2023 13:02

If the weather is fine, you can get off the ferry at Seacombe and walk along the prom to New Brighton. Alternatively there is a smaller version of the Baltic Market food hall at Woodside Ferry terminal with plenty of independent food stalls and cocktails.

Fabulous place with a young teen!

Hope Street: walk from one cathedral to the other of course. Spend a bit of time in each. Choral evensong is glorious if you can be there for that. (Regardless of whether you’re religious or not.)

See if you can get tickets for something at the Everyman Theatre. The atmosphere can be wonderful if it’s a good play.

If you’re keen on performance the Tung Auditorium hosts some brilliant classical / orchestral / vocal events. Have a look on their website.

The Walker Art Gallery is world class.

Might seem odd but Liverpool Central Library is a venue in itself - including the walkway outside.

Everything on Albert Docks. Museums, Tate Gallery, eating your lunch sitting on a bench looking out over the river …

Sefton Park Palm House - warm and embracing even if you don’t care much about plants.

Very Best Thing: the Another Place sculptures on Crosby Beach. Absolutely unmissable.

Quite envious, I love a trip to Liverpool, and it’s always proved entertaining for curious children.

SomersetBrie · 12/08/2023 13:19

This is all fabulous, thank you.
I'm going to check out the weather nearer the time, Seacombe to New Brighton sounds great.
Thanks for food suggestions too, I want to have a few plans up my sleeve while at the same time looking relaxed and chilled!

Nooooo! I crossed you, so you might not see my (incomparably brilliant) suggestions!

Ha! I was wondering how I missed yours!
Been googling Crosby beach and wondering if we can squeeze that in.

Liverpool sounds exactly what I want. Low key stuff but loads of it.

It's a wonderful city. So much to see and explore, we actually just spent a lot of time walking about, soaking it all in, eating, having coffees
Etc and that was with two young kids.
And everyone was so friendly, that's the best part of it!

LizzieBet14 · 12/08/2023 13:37

I took my DS14 to The Royal Liver building 360 tour - it was fantastic! Great views across the city. The digital show half way up was really good - really recommend it.

MarciaSaysANumber · 12/08/2023 14:35

Do go! It’s (IIRC) about 15 / 20 minutes away by car or train. Fantastic, blustery walk along usually pretty empty beach - and feels like such an adventure discovering more and more statues staring out to sea.

Partyowl21 · 12/08/2023 16:48

There is a underground tour of the mersey tunnel which is interesting and next door to the Liver Building and near to the ferry terminal. Look at the Merseytravel site for trains to Crosby etc. There is also a travel information point by the main bus stations. Currently an open top bus running to New Brighton think stops end of Sept. Hop on and off buses save walking between lots of the attractions.

Our Mersey Tunnel Tour takes you on a unique behind the scenes look at the famous Queensway Mersey Tunnel which opened in 1934.

Thank you all. I have quite a lot to pack in to slightly less than two days. I can't wait!

Go to Chester.

It's the sienna to Liverpools Florence

DinaofCloud9 · 12/08/2023 19:52

I actually wouldn't bother getting off the ferry at Seacombe. There's nothing to see except the Liverpool skyline which you can see on the ferry.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 12/08/2023 20:11

Quirky quarter is great with kids in Liverpool and the Tate is mostly free as is the Liverpool museum. I wouldn't waste your time with the ferry to seacombe personally with only 2 days.

hels71 · 12/08/2023 20:23

DD loved the British Music Experience.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/08/2023 10:23

Watching!! I also have a 14 year old with a birthday coming up. We had a day in Liverpool a few years ago en route to Belfast, and have always promised we'd go back.

Yajebbend · 13/08/2023 10:31

The cathedral is amazing and the sunken graveyard. Get some holy water great for plants

I have been to Chester a couple of times but it's certainly a good shout. I think this time though I just want new things.
I love this thread, it's cheering me up every time someone posts.

New place opened in Liverpool one (city centre) called Gravity Max. Has VR carting urban golf, vr bowling and other stuff like arcades. A bit expensive but nice treat for a birthday. Has the benefit of being really central for shops and restaurants and not far from Albert Docks and ferry.

I did that but didn't think it was worth the money.
