How much can you drink without a hangover and is it always the same?

Last weekend I was away with a friend. On Friday we had a couple of pints of beer in the afternoon watching a rally and shared a bottle of wine with dinner.

The following evening we didn't drink during the day, but shared a bottle of wine with dinner and had a cocktail instead of pudding.

I had a much worse hangover on the Saturday morning. On Sunday I felt a bit jaded/tired but no headache or other symptoms.

I'm not a regular drinker so both evenings were enough for me to be quite tipsy, but if anything I'd have expected to feel worse after the cocktail evening, as the alcohol was consumed more quickly.

With those amounts, I would say you had become alcohol dependent by the Sunday, your body's way of making it think a hair of the dog would acceptable...

PurpleSteak · 11/08/2023 17:51

Alcohol dependent in 24 hours? [Grin] And then not have another drink for weeks?

What do you mean "those amounts"? It's really not excessive for occasional drinking. It's not even over government guidelines.

3 glasses of wine/3 pints.

Did you drink more water/other non-alcoholic drinks on the Saturday? A lot of hangover symptoms are dehydration.

I've never had a hangover (minimal drinker, not hangover-immune) so can't offer my anecdotal data!

LimeCheesecake · 11/08/2023 17:55

I can manage half a bottle of wine but only if there’s also lots of food involved. However I can’t drink the day before and first day of period without being very sick, even just one glass.

HughWalpole · 11/08/2023 17:59

Lots of different factors- how much you drank, what it was, how much water you had, what you ate, even the weather can make a difference.

No. It really wouldn't.

To answer your question OP. For me, if I have more than two 250ml classes of rosé I'd have a headache the next day. I'm not a drinker though and have friends who drink a bell of a lot more and would be fine.

I think it also depends on the drink and over how long you have it, what you eat etc.

CuriositysCat · 11/08/2023 18:00

What a bizarre response from @Tighginn above!

I drink little and often rather than in quantity these days but over the course of a long evening I could drink a whole bottle of wine and feel ok the next day.

I like a pint or two but find that I feel worse after beer and mixing beer with other drinks (as you did on the Friday) doesn’t agree with me. I can drink spirits and wine and feel ok. A couple of glasses of wine, a large G&T and a cocktail would be a typical girls’ night and I would be ok the next day.

mast0650 · 11/08/2023 18:00

I've never really had a hangover of the type that other people often describe (proper headache etc). I just tend to feel a bit tired and low energy - and that's partly because I've often not slept very well due to food/drink/late night. I don't normally drink more than about half a bottle of wine though (but it has been known).

I've been sick from drink three times in my life and that has always been from mixing weird stuff. Often unknowingly (cocktails at parties that weren't what they said they were, or were much stronger than they said they were).

DuploTrain · 11/08/2023 18:02

I find cocktails are often very weak - might just have one shot of spirits and is basically just juice.

Mixing beer and wine would probably give me a worse hangover.

ThePoshUns · 11/08/2023 18:04

I can drink a bottle of white wine over the course of an evening and be ok.
Mixing drinks is what makes me ill.
And can't do more than 2 nights on the bounce

devildeepbluesea · 11/08/2023 18:05

I don’t really get hangovers unless I properly cane it - and mix my drinks too.

Riapia · 11/08/2023 18:36

It may be too late for you OP but others should be made aware of the dangers of drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
You appear to not have any shame for your drunken behaviour.

😉😁😁😁

MoMandaS · 11/08/2023 18:37

It depends on how much I've eaten that day, how much exercise I've done and at what point I am in my cycle.

Pontiouspilate · 11/08/2023 18:39

I’m surprised you weren’t on the crack by the last day to be honest….

about a bottle and a half of wine and I’ll have a hangover

Fizbosshoes · 11/08/2023 18:44

Recently I went to a party and about 10 units of alcohol over about 3.5 hrs. (Mainly prosecco) Its a lot more than I would regularly drink but I was fine the next day.

3kidsaremorethanenough · 11/08/2023 18:48

Don't mix the barley and the grape!

Lagershandy · 11/08/2023 18:48

Never mix the grape with the grain. = 😒

Lagershandy · 11/08/2023 18:50

@ 3kids, jinx!!!!

Fireyflies · 11/08/2023 18:52

If it's just an evening with no food involved. 2-2.5 pints. Always been the same since I was a teenager.

If a longer period, with food, etc, maybe a bit more.

DontYouThreatenMeWithADeadFish · 11/08/2023 18:57

It's not so much how much I drink but what I drink. Some certain wines will give me a stinking hangover after two glasses. Beavertown ipa beer gives me a headache just by drinking one can.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 11/08/2023 20:13

Two glasses of red wine will keep me up all night (I think it's the tannins) and I will know I had them the next day.

White wine, however, I can drink by the gallon (and often do) with no ill-effects.

golddustwomen · 11/08/2023 20:21

I drink quite a lot I think. Half of this site would be horrified Grin I went out for a meal Wednesday night and drank 3 pints of cobra lager. First time I've tried it and was in no way drunk, 3 course meal ate too. Jesus Christ I felt like shit on Thursday. I could drink 3+ pints of my normal lager and feel fine. I think different types of alcohol can have different affects the next day.
Last Saturday we had friends over for food and drinks and I drank probably a bottle of Prosecco to myself over the course of the evening and I was right as rain the next day.
Madri also makes me feel shit, which is a shame as it tastes delightful!

I can't drink Cobra either. Or Stella. Generally OK with real ales or wine, but not mixing, which is a shame because I like a pint in the pub followed by wine with dinner 😆

I’m the opposite @Alighttouchonthetiller. I can’t drink more than a small glass of white wine without getting a hangover. But I can drink considerably more red wine and be absolutely fine.
