How to stop eating crap all time?

Moose657 · 11/08/2023 11:17

Why do I like sweet things (always been this way) I have to have them in the house because husband wouldn't be happy to not have chocolate in the house, but why do I have no willpower!

I'm trying to better during meals too and eat healthier but my whole diet is shit and I'm like no wonder I'm overweight.

I just felt so crap when I ate junk food that helped me quit it. My energy and skin was always awful off the back of it.

I’m currently wearing a blood sugar monitor and I can tell you everything you put in your mouth impacts your blood sugar. Honestly. EVERY SINGLE MOUTHFUL. So if you are grazing on
refined carbs across the day causing your insulin to have to mop up the sugar tens of times you will very likely get diabetes. Some people avoid it. Most people don’t.

continentallentil · 11/08/2023 11:30

Meal plan

And tell your husband you expect basic support for weight loss so his chocolate needs to go in a tin in a cupboard out of sight. It’s really hard when it’s in your line of sight.

Moose657 · 11/08/2023 11:31

@RudsyFarmer thanks

The issue being I'm now 31 and grew up on mostly beige oven cooked food, so even now I'm still not 100 sure what I should be eating.

Don't buy it.
Let husband keep his chocolate in a locked metal coin box.
If you are truly wanting to make changes - make the hard decisions and get husband to agree to help.
Just my ideas of what I do .. not from a dietition....

Drink a cup of tea when feeling like snacks and always have something healthy to eat if hungry but learn to enjoy feeling a little hungry.
Large amounts of salad and vegies and some protein at every meal. Three meals per day and two snacks. Develop a routine that gives you 14 hours overnight of fasting so your tummy knows the feeling of being empty and full.
Buy the food that a thinner person would buy at the supermarket. Walk for half an hour each day.

Seek help from a trusted dietition.
Stick with your healthy menu for at least a year.
Slow burn and start again each day.

Mummy08m · 11/08/2023 11:33

You're probably hungry - have bigger meals then you might not want a sweet snack

Pinkflamingopants · 11/08/2023 11:37

More protein in your meals, keep healthy snacks in, carrot sticks and celery and houmous. Easier said than done though 😬

user1492757084 · 11/08/2023 11:38

Oven cooked is fine but beige is not.
Colourful vegies and salad - as many as you like, roasted, steamed or raw.
Protein - chicken, fish, tuna, eggs, cheese, milk.
One or two pieces of fresh fruit or canned fruit per day.
Three dairy - yoghurt, milk etc.
Grains - whole grain pasta, wraps, slice of bread, rice, canned beans, handful of almonds, oats.
Cut down on butter and spreads, jams.

You might not like all of the food so eat more of the types you do like.
Soups are great.

I’m trying to lose weight as well and I’ve been eating a lot of strawberries and those birdseye steam fresh packs of sweetcorn peas and carrots

BoohooWoohoo · 11/08/2023 11:43

I was just debating whether to have a snack or eat my lunch early but settled for a drink which has satisfied me enough that I think that I can hold off eating until 1pm.
Luckily my kids are old enough to go to the shops if they want chocolate or sweets. Will your h compromise by hiding his stash somewhere you can't get to like his car?

Moose657 · 11/08/2023 11:48

So I hate hot drinks apart from hot chocolate maybe a latte at a push.

Drinks tend to be squash/ orange juice or fizzy.

I don't tend to have breakfast, or if I do toast.
Once tried overnight oats and hated it.

Lunch is normally a sandwich or leftovers from the night before.

Dinner is a mix, last night was enchiladas, tonight is homemade chicken kebab with cheesy chips.

The only fruit and veg I will eat, is strawberries, apples, potatoes, cucumber, parsnips, carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, onions, cauliflower. Possible some lettuce but have to be in the right mood for that.

Snacking is a issue, it's mainly at about 11 and after dinner that's the issue there.

I can literally tell you. Get a low carb recipe book. Eat that food. You are sorted.

RoachFish · 11/08/2023 11:51

I used to have a sweet tooth until I started 16:8 periodic fasting. It took a couple of months but now I haven’t had any craving for sugary things (except fruit) for 4 months. Yesterday my dd bought donuts and I felt slightly nauseous just looking at them. 6 months ago I would have gladly had one.

I know you mean well but I wouldn’t eat lots of strawberries.

Not only are they are very high source of pesticides they are just causing a blood sugar spike every time you eat them. A small quantity eaten with a fat dampener like full fat Greek yogurt and maybe a sprinkling of nuts will help.

Lovetotravel123 · 11/08/2023 11:53

Swap the chocolate for 80% cocoa chocolate. You end up eating much less of it. It means he can have it in the house but you aren’t as tempted.

Orange juice is pure sugar. Dilute cordial was actually fine on my monitor. Make sure it really is quite dilute though.

Not eating breakfast is fine.

Snacking junk food late at night will ensure you have a bad nights sleep.

BCBird · 11/08/2023 11:54

I hear you OP. I lost 10 stone and through grief, laziness and CBA attitude have gained 5. I know exactly what to do. I live alone so no excuse really. On holiday recently I complimented mate on a dress she was wearing. Has had 20 plus years and it still fits. Blew my mind.
Re sweet treats, can you onli buy stuff u don't like for your husband or better still get him to buy them? For snacks have dome hard boiled eggs readily available. For sweet treats, berries? Mehjool dates are delicious but high in natural, sugar.feel like u are eating a toffee.good luck.

AuntieJune · 11/08/2023 11:57

You're the only one in charge of what you put in your body. Unless you have some kind of ARFID special need type thing, you need to grow up and eat a diet fit for adults, you sound like you've never really left childhood eating habits behind.

Ditch the squash, juice and fizzy drinks for a start, go with water, herbal teas.

Widen the variety of fruit and veg you eat - try them with an open mind and commit to eating that thing at least 5 times before you decide you don't like it.

Have veg at every meal. In fairly large quantities. Reduce the amount of carbs you have. If you need snacks, decide in advance what you'll have and stick to the portion size you decide. It's easy to keep snacking but the feeling of wanting more - you'll have that whenever you stop, so stop after the first portion.

Change your diet not only for weight reasons but health reasons, a high sugar diet with not much fruit or veg or fibre will put you at higher risk of cancer, heart disease and all kinds of other unpleasant things. Find out about the microbiome and how junk food affects it.

Look up new recipes and teach yourself how to cook a wider range of recipes that don't rely on beige things.

"Eat food, not too much, mostly plants."

DelilahBucket · 11/08/2023 12:07

For the most part I have stopped eating sweet things. The first couple of days are hard and require discipline (it's also still in our house for DH and DS) but then I find I don't crave it anymore. I never order a dessert if we eat out. If others are having one I'll have a warm drink.

I had a little blip earlier this week when I was overtired and that always leads to cravings of sugar. I eat it, then I want it more.

Type two diabetes runs all through one side of my family so I keep that in mind because in every single case it was brought on by gorging on sugar. My grandma was rake thin but she really did have a very sweet tooth and unfortunately her diabetes was what caused her death. My mum has already been warned she's close to losing her sight if she doesn't get her blood sugars under control but she still keeps eating things like three Magnums in one sitting. I don't want to be like that. I have a constant battle between genetics and willpower but it's necessary.

Hollyisalrightactuallysorry · 11/08/2023 12:12

I could be you Op. All the posts saying don't eat this and eat that I nod along to.
I get it. I know what's good for and what isn't.

But that's not the question. The question the OP asked us how to stop herself from eating crap all the time. I have the same question

The answer isn't a list of foods to eat or a diet to stick to

The answer is how to embark on a total change in mindset, habits and an influx of willpower. And that is a much more difficult question to answer... I wish I knew myself!!

Radiatorvalves · 11/08/2023 12:19

I think you need to focus on a few things. Drink more water (and stop the OJ and fizzy drinks). You should be having about 2 litres of water a day. That will make a difference to your calorie intake. Second rule would be to stop snacking. I find it really hard - I wfh, have 2 fit lean boys who can eat anything. I’ve had to stop the chocolate biscuits.

You will need to work on rest of your diet, but perhaps start with the above? Good luck.

Ridingaroundonbuses · 11/08/2023 12:22

Try Weight Watchers. You can still have your sweet treats but it encourages you to eat more vegetables etc in terms of 0 point foods.

Worth thinking about OP. Works for me and I have a massive sweet tooth.

blobby10 · 11/08/2023 12:29

I'm going to echo was PP have said and say don't buy anything that you know you will eat and shouldn't. Your DH can get his own bloody chocolate! If he does that and puts it where you can see it, put it in a plastic bag and into his sock drawer or desk drawer or wardrobe - anywhere that you can't see it. Don't buy fizzy drinks. I think I read somewhere that it takes 3 weeks to break a habit and 3 months to make it stick - happy to be corrected by the way if the actual numbers are wrong but the principal is there. I gave up chocolate and reduced biscuits/sugar over Lent and felt so much better - then someone bought me an Easter Egg and the addiction returned. I didn't even really enjoy the chocolate if I'm honest ! Still haven't managed to have a week without any since then.
Might start tomorrow...............................

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/08/2023 12:30

I don't buy it routinely.Dh and ds can survive without it.
If I do get it in then we enjoy it that day then I'll leave it for a bit.

BlueBlubbaWhale · 11/08/2023 12:34

Try something crafty to keep you busy?
