Staying at a relative’s house and I’ve wet the bed

I’m 32 years old.

I’ve got a horrendous UTI, I’m on my fourth week of antibiotics, been hospitalised with them before, etc. Due to see consultant in two weeks.

I’m staying at a relative’s and I’m so, so embarrassed, I’ve woken up with the bed soaking wet in two places, it’s gone right through to the mattress. I don’t know what to do.

I’ve never wet, not even as a child. My aunty is upstairs fast asleep as is my cousin, have texted my cousin in the hope she’ll see my message. Got up and showered and put my wet stuff in the bath. What do I do with the bed? I don’t know where dry sheets are.

Do you have a child to blame it on?
Take a cup of tea upstairs and accidentally spill it. Then you can wash the bedding.

AliceOlive · 09/08/2023 03:51

Did you strip it and find whatever you can to soak up as much as possible?

My mom always said kitty litter was the way to go.

How close are you to them?

UTImisery · 09/08/2023 03:53

I’ve stripped the bed and stuck a bath towel over the wet bit, and tried to soak up what I can. They don’t have cats but they do have dogs so wonder if they have puppy pads somewhere.

I think my aunty will understand but she works long shifts and I don’t want to be a bother, but I don’t think I can not tell her either.

Awww im sorry! I bled on a relatives bed once.. loads of it.. and I didnt even know them very well it was super embarrassing. At least wee will just wash right out.
Id rinse the sheets a little then put them in the washing machine. Look in the undersink cupboard or wherever they keep cleaning products and see if they've got any spray fabric cleaner stuff
These things happen try not to be too embarrassed

UTImisery · 09/08/2023 04:10

I found zoflora so I’ve sprayed the wet bit down with that, and stuck a sanitary pad on. I’m guessing my antibiotics aren’t working, I’ve had three weeks of nitrofurantoin and now on co-amoxiclav. My cousin should be up about half 6 so hopefully she sees message then. Thank God I woke up as soon as I realised what I’d done.

That’s good - you’ve done what you can. I am sure any decent person would understand. We actually have waterproof mattress pads on our guest beds in case something like this happens. It’s as much to protect the bed as to protect our guests from feeling badly. Can you access the laundry to wash the linens without waking everyone?

maratara · 09/08/2023 04:36

Put the sheets in the wash. If you don't want to say anything tell them you spilt a drink on them. Grab a towel from the bathroom and press super hard on the wee. Hang the sheets, wash the towel and then explain you had an accident " a drink or wee - whatever you want to say" apologise and move on.
ALso, so they have spray sanitiser? if so use that. And can the mattress be flipped or does it have a pillowtop? Flip it if you can, after drying with the towel and sanitising.
You poor dear. Don't panic.

UTImisery · 09/08/2023 04:47

Uncle’s awake for work and told me it’s fine, to go into the other spare bed and that it can be sorted in the morning. Said aunty will totally understand. I’m afraid to go to sleep in case happens again, I’ve stuck a pad on and there can’t be much wee left in my system, so hopefully not.

You poor thing! I'm glad you have such understanding relatives.

It's common with severe UTIs so you won't be the first and you won't be the last.

maratara · 09/08/2023 04:58

ALso - hairdryer!!!!!!

Emanresu9 · 09/08/2023 04:59

Has it gone through to the mattress? Just go on the sofa now and try and get some more sleep poor thing.

Fraaahnces · 09/08/2023 05:02

You poor thing! Nothing worse than feeling crap and having humiliating symptoms. Ask Uncle if they have any bi-carb to help dry up the mattress. Just sprinkle lightly over the top and it should absorb some of it. (Or carpet cleaning powder)

UTImisery · 09/08/2023 05:02

It has gone through to mattress yeah. Thankfully it’s just a circle on the mattress, I woke up whilst I was ‘going’ so to speak so managed to get out of bed before it could soak through too too much. Sheets are soaking as are pyjamas (have just stuck the lot in the bath). Think mattress will be fine once it’s dried out. It’s a posh fabric memory foam thing.

Put a towell or two on top of the sheet to lie on in the new bed incase the medication causes any more accidents.
All will be well. The weather is helpful for drying bedding.

HerMammy · 09/08/2023 05:33

Put the bedding in the wash, don't leave it in bath.

Whattodowithit88 · 09/08/2023 05:35

This will probably affect you for quite a few months now if you ever sleep over at someone’s house. Spare yourself experiencing the fear of it and just get an adult nappy for future stays at others.

The first time I ever wet the bed I was 26, I was shocked to my core and staying over at someone else’s, even months after that was such a horrible experience, I was too scared to sleep incase it happened again, the feel of the fear was horrible!! It never did happen again though but at the time it was all so consuming.

DreamTheMoors · 09/08/2023 06:01

The memory foam, if it’s on the top, is most certainly waterproof.

This actually happened to me a few months ago during a UTI - and I think caffeine aggravated it. I got on a homemade iced coffee kick and was drinking too many. Tea, coffee, Cokes - stay away from them all.

Amazon sells boxes of puppy pads. I buy them anyway for my dog but they’re perfect for putting on the bed before you get in - they make for a relaxing sleep as you know the bed is protected.

I know how awful it feels to wet the bed - it must be 1000% worse in someone else’s house, but it was an accident!!
I hope you feel better real quick. 💜

TarquinOliverNimrod · 09/08/2023 06:14

Poor you. I suggest you get some maternity knickers and wear two pairs to bed when you have an infection. Can go to bed worry free (and very, very sexy).

Sceptre86 · 09/08/2023 06:16

I'd put all the sheets in the washing machine and set it on. If the duvet is wet give the specific area a scrub and then let it dry, afterwards you csn bag in a black bin bag to take to the lanudrette as it might not fit in their washing machine. I'd layer the new bed with a towel under the sheet and a top over it. Don't be.so hard on yourself, you're clearly unwell. I'd not stay at someone else's home if I was ill myself. If you develop a uti again just grab a supply of pads that you can use to layer up the bed.

LunaTheCat · 09/08/2023 06:31

Poor you! Sounds like an awful infection… can you get some medical help? Sounds like you need it.

VinEtFromage · 09/08/2023 06:40

maratara · 09/08/2023 04:58

ALso - hairdryer!!!!!!

@maratara no! You don't force dry or heat dry wee.

@UTImisery I'm glad your Uncle was nice about it, if you haven't, open the window, you need air circulation to dry it out. How wet was the mattress? I'd offer to pay to have it cleaned. A GOOD carpet cleaner who does upholstery is what you need.

Hope you get the UTI sorted soon x

mariiiaa · 09/08/2023 06:51

Wash the bedding in the machine yourself and hang it all up.

Scrub the mattress with whatever you can find in their cleaning stuff.

I would lay it on really thick about your infection to relieve your embarrassment a little. Tell them you feel really unwell, "woke up with a fever, shivering, severe back and tummy pain etc... must be getting worse if this has happened..."

TokyoSushi · 09/08/2023 06:55

Oh no! Put the sheets in the washing machine ready, even if you don't know where the stuff is to turn it on. Nobody wants to find the sheets in the bath!

Neonyellowfish · 09/08/2023 07:29

Why can’t you put the sheets in the washing machine instead of the bath?

Say sorry, explain and offer to replace the mattress. Wee smells and you will struggle to get rid of the smell.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 09/08/2023 07:40

You poor thing. Assuming they have a machine, I’d get the sheets in the wash asap. Add some zoflora in with the detergent.
