Staying at a relative’s house and I’ve wet the bed

I’m 32 years old.

I’ve got a horrendous UTI, I’m on my fourth week of antibiotics, been hospitalised with them before, etc. Due to see consultant in two weeks.

I’m staying at a relative’s and I’m so, so embarrassed, I’ve woken up with the bed soaking wet in two places, it’s gone right through to the mattress. I don’t know what to do.

I’ve never wet, not even as a child. My aunty is upstairs fast asleep as is my cousin, have texted my cousin in the hope she’ll see my message. Got up and showered and put my wet stuff in the bath. What do I do with the bed? I don’t know where dry sheets are.

fresh wee is very easy to get out of a mattress with some vinegar and baking soda!

although admittedly not sure about memory foam mattresses

Highlyflavouredgravy · 09/08/2023 07:43

Put the sheets in the washing machine not the bath!

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 09/08/2023 08:06

Goodness just wash the sheets and the mattress as best you can and then ask for cleaning products when they get up or go and buy some.

Agree with washing sheets-I'd also lean mattress up to dry or flip it?

That way it won't soak the whole way through.

Accidents happen-don't worry just sort it the best you can.

Ohyousillydivvy · 09/08/2023 08:22

Sheets in the wash asap & then check to see if they've got pet accident cleaner. If they have the use that to wash the wet patches. If not, mix some washing powder, biological if they have any, and then wash the affected area.

Open all the windows and let the mattress air dry.

Wash the bedding in the machine yourself and hang it all up.

Scrub the mattress with whatever you can find in their cleaning stuff.

I would lay it on really thick about your infection to relieve your embarrassment a little. Tell them you feel really unwell, "woke up with a fever, shivering, severe back and tummy pain etc... must be getting worse if this has happened..."

This is awful advice!!! Do not lie about it.

Be honest to your family.

Put the sheets in the wash not the bath, find some towels or kitchen roll and dry out the mattress, you may need to replace it if it doesn't come out.

My SDD used to wet with a UTI as a young girl so fairly good at cleaning up.

Sprinkle baking powder over the area, don't heat it with a hair dryer, open windows and air it out as much as you can and hopefully it will be fine.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/08/2023 08:41

Just tell the truth. I would not be cross about an accident. But I would be cross if you told me it was a drink and it wasn't. Get some pet wee spray. It's really good. My cat weed on my memory foam pillow last week and it's cleaned it completely.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/08/2023 08:42

Memory foam
Mattresses do not always have a waterproof top. Mine did not.

UTImisery · 09/08/2023 09:16

Sheets are washed, mattress is dry and my aunty (very) matter of fact said not to mention it again, no big deal, all absolutely fine. So that’s a relief.

Glad they were understanding. 💐

UTImisery · 09/08/2023 10:45

Me too! I’ve never done that in my life. I could understand if I was eg catheterised or something like that, they can bypass/leak but I’ve never wet the bed otherwise. Am going to be dreading going to sleep tonight!

@Onceuponaheartache

Where on earth did I say lie about it?!?!

Telling her to say she woke up shivering, fever etc. No where was that mentioned. That would be lying

Why don't you go home?

flapjackfairy · 09/08/2023 12:47

pop to the supermarket and pick up some puppy pads or incontinence sheets in a pharmacy the you can relax

If you are staying there tonight again I’d take some precautions. Puppy pads or a bin liner under the fitted sheet.

Desmondo2021 · 09/08/2023 12:53

I personally think she will understand and be fine but you should probably offer to replace the mattress if you can afford to.

HoppingPavlova · 09/08/2023 12:56

Not your fault at all, and of course people were understanding. Could you get some full incontinence pants today? Would both save the bed and let you have a stress/worry free night of sleep.

JustToBeMe · 09/08/2023 13:02

Having had a uti plus a bad cough I brought these...
They're very long and kept me dry all night...

You can I believe get night time ones too...

UTImisery · 09/08/2023 13:22

I’ll stick a pad on tonight and I’ll ask about puppy pads, I’m sure they’ll have something as they’ve three dogs one ... I’m a lot more comfortable today than I was last night, and less tired too so that’s good news.

ArcticBells · 09/08/2023 13:29

I wet the bed very occasionally and have done all my adult life but never as a child. There is no medical reason for it which makes it harder as there's no warning (ie no uti).

Whenever I have to stay anywhere I take a puppy training mat and position it under myself just in case. It's sn embarrassing problem to have and sadly incurable

hardboiledeggs · 09/08/2023 13:32

Aw OP I feel for you. I would do as you've done trying to clean it but i'd definitely tell her. Hope your UTI clears up soon.

mariiiaa · 09/08/2023 15:03

@Onceuponaheartache

I suggested to save herself from feeling too embarrassed, to elaborate on feeling poorly with the UTI that she does have with typical UTI symptoms.

People will likely be more sympathetic and understanding if someone is feeling unwell.

I'd rather have a good excuse for it happening than just , "I've pissed the bed out of nowhere".

UTImisery · 09/08/2023 15:06

It’s honestly not been mentioned again. I’ve rang my GP to check that the antibiotics I’m on are covering the infection, but I’m not getting the same urgency today, and when I am going it’s slightly less painful. Still having to double void ie pee, stand up, sit down and pee again. But not too bad.

Delatron · 09/08/2023 15:32

Would you be more comfortable going home if that’s possible?
