Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

I remember those liquorice root sticks masquerading as sweets. Also carob. Didn't fool me.

Evenstar · 09/08/2023 22:17

@Carlou loving you taking the kitty for an ice cream 😻 did someone comment or did you just realise no other cats were getting a Sunday outing?

You grab hold of the peel and you pull it off. Like so:

That's not peel. Unlike every other fruit or vegetable that is routinely peeled that layer is the same colour and texture as the rest of it. It's just pulling the mushroom apart.

@isthismylifenow - not in the warming drawer underneath, IN the actual oven – sitting on the racks! Every time I wanted to cook something I had to take out a bunch of pots and pans 😂

@natura both my mum (north west) and husband’s mum (south west) do this. Does my head in!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 09/08/2023 22:20

I thought everyone had little forks for eating corn on the cob, ours were shaped like corn on the cob for the handle with two sharp spikes to spear into the ends. Like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Interlocking-Holders-Stainless-Sweetcorn-Skewers/dp/B092R4V62R/ref=asc_df_B092R4V62R/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=499436213999&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5843566918894014888&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007850&hvtargid=pla-1368114988977&psc=1

My grandmother used to grow it in her garden so we had it a lot when it was in season.

I always thought the man who let the clay pigeons go was called Paul 😳

I had a nasty shock when my in laws pulled one small gravy boat out for 14 people! Nothing worse than a dry roast dinner

I make stock with bones and veg to freeze so that I can make extra gravy with my roasts. It's always the first thing to disappear, after the Yorkshires.

Goatlady5812 · 09/08/2023 22:27

I grew up calling a remote a DONGER… that’s what my parents always called it and I never new it wasn’t it’s actual name. I can’t even tell you the looks I’ve had when I’ve been asking for peoples dongers…..

At children's parties in Australia, it was traditional to serve white bread with the crusts cut off, liberally spread to the edges with butter, and covered in 100s and 1000s. It was one of the things I was most excited about at my kids 5th birthday and not only did nobody eat them, all the parents were absolutely horrified and looked at me like I was a heathen!! Oh well.

My mum had these too, in Middlesbrough. And apple sandwiches. We had them as very special treats. They were called fairy bread.
I thought a tiger was a lady lion for years.

greyhairnomore · 09/08/2023 22:27

@katepilar I always wear underwear under pyjamas. When people say they don't wear knickers under pyjamas to 'air their bits' , how can your air things if you've got pyjamas on ? Smile

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 09/08/2023 22:28

Porridge on buttered toast with sugar sprinkled over.
served with builders tea of course

The Snake Pass, the A57, was covered in snakes, I kept my eyes shut if we ever went over it. As an adult I felt very brave driving it with my eyes open.

@JudgeJ Ha! Snake Pass is, of all the roads, the one that you do not want to keep your eyes shut while driving on.

It absolutely is peel. It peels away easily from the rest of the mushroom. Its the skin. Its the protective layer. ITS PEEL.

I CANNOT with the peel deniers 😂😂😂

I didn't realise that when a visitor leaves someone's house, other families don't all stand up and wave from the window until their relative/friend has gone out of sight.
My parents and us kids used to all stand up and wave goodbye to each other until we couldn't see each other any more, I thought everyone did this too!
Then I stood waving for ages to a friend years later (in my 20s) and she said it freaked her out. To be fair it probably would be kind of weird if you're not used to it. Never realised it could be weird!

😂omg thats so funny!

😂😂😂😂😂

Honestly, I had no idea I care this much about bloody mushrooms! I don't even like the fecking things!!

Don't care what people do with them. Peel or do not peel I DO NOT care. But why are people denying the existence of the peel? Its right fucking there 🤣😂 soooo wierd!!

Nah. I'm not buying it. It's not peel like orange peel. It's an intrinsic part of the structure of the mushroom! 😀

Oh god that brought back a memory. An old friend eating a kiwi, skin and all. I was aghast.

This, for me, depends on the kiwi.

I seem to remember kiwis in the UK are very hairy on the outside and the skin is tough, while the ones where I live are much smoother and the skin is paper-thin.

I eat the skin on kiwis all the time here, but wouldn't dream of biting into the ones I used to buy in the UK.

Mishka3085 · 09/08/2023 22:43

Mince and beans. My gran (I’m Scottish) made this all the time for us. Loved it. Look of absolute horror and disgust on my OH face when I told him was priceless! Also, cutting up bun (fruit, Madeira, cherry) to serve at the bells and opening the door to let the old year out and new year in also rocked him to his core! See also obsessively cleaning the house on Hogmanay for the new year…my mums mum was proper old fashioned Scottish come to think on it! Ps I am going to try dessert Yorkshire’s now. Sounds yummy.

It's nooot. It's a skin, a protective layer. You can't peel it off and then keep peeling. There's just one peel over the top of the mushroom which wraps underneath and finishes underneath, near the stalk, seperate to the rest of the mushroom. I promise you there is peel.

I never thought I would die on a hill of mushroom peel but here I am.

Go get a mushroom, pull off its stalk and you will easily see that it has peel. Until you have done this you know nothing, Jon Snow.

Sharing towels - you are clean after a shower but the next person has to use a damp towel 🤢

”Banana bum hole” is brilliant and what I shall call the end from this day on.

Mine is banana sandwiches (must be white bread, preferably really cheap stuff), thick layer of butter and sugar sprinkled on the banana.

I thought “cottage cheese” was called “Scottish cheese” until I was in my late teens

My ex boyfriend's family used to put cold custard on hot crumble and were confused as to why I thought this was weird!

We always had the option of cold or warm custard. And also whether you wanted cream as well as custard😄.

I'm pretty sure that my family and also my home ec teacher peeled mushrooms and cut the stalks off. Weird. We also used to have said mushrooms in EVERY salad. And had salad with every meal even if it was something like lamb chops.
