Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

Has anyone mentioned bread and gravy yet? My dad used to pour gravy on a slice of white bread and eat it with a knife and fork. Delicious! My DH is still horrified when I do this.

But to me it's normal. Unlike his family's weird thing with the apple pie and milk.

MLP18 · 09/08/2023 20:31

Corned beef hash on pancakes for main on pancake day.
Coffee on cereal (this was from my Austrian grandma)

I also prefer butter and peanut butter.

I have mentioned it at eye appointments, and they can't see anything untoward at the back of my eyes. They said it is apparently something to do with a difference in number of rods and cones which detect BW/Colour in each eye. Apparently it is nothing to be concerned about, but they did say that if I notice any changes, to let them know.

@BearSoFair So you and your dad have it too? Welcome to the club! Are you both warm/cool in the same eyes, or the opposite way round? DD and I are opposites.

We're both cool in the left eye and warm in the right!

MLP18 · 09/08/2023 20:32

We did this too with the gravy and bread!

Chips, cheese and gravy too 😋

Lucozade isn't medicine! I still struggle to accept the truth.

Oh yes, I relate to this, in fact it was worth getting unwell to have some, (I wasnt allowed fizzy drinks unless it was Christmas or birthdays)

Coffee on cereal? I think your grandma is an absolute genius.

I use an oil cleanser on my face in the shower. I use a warm washcloth to wipe it off. Then I wash the rest of me with a body puff.

I then put a squirt of bodywash on the washcloth, wash it and wring it out. Before I get out of the shower, I dry myself with it. That way, when I dry myself with a bath towel it is not doing the 'heavy lifting' and it stays fresh all week, while the washcloths are used once then go in the wash.

This is literally my process too lol

Jenasaurus · 09/08/2023 20:34

bread and ice cream

Washcloth twin!

My Dad always had tales of “crumpet shooting season” which I totally believed was a thing.. and when he said that he had a “bone in his leg” I thought it was an horrific illness!

Havanananana · 09/08/2023 20:39

New girl from Holland in my grade 4 class brought sandwiches to school of white bread, butter and chocolate sprinkles!

Danes don't faff about with hundreds and thousands or with chocolate sprinkles.
They buy little boxes of chocolate slices (pålægschokolade) to put on their bread

White bread and butter crisp sandwiches. Grew up on these but my husband is horrified my them.

Now I'm craving one at nearly 9pm!!!!

Having butter and peanut butter on toast. Totally normal in my family, every time I've done it in front of someone else they've reacted as if I'm eating like late era Elvis.

My husband always does this when I put both on toast or in a sandwich - “do you really want butter with your peanut BUTTER??”

We’ve always used separate towel and then put them in the wash, after every use, never have we used the same towel twice, lol

You must spend half your life laundering towels. Not great for the environment to wash a towel after a single use.

I do find sharing towels, as so many seem to do, a bit grim.

Maireas · 09/08/2023 20:42

Yes, if you're not sharing, you don't need to wash each time.

Scarlettdewinter · 09/08/2023 20:42

Didn't know until I was in my mid-twenties that the whole world does not call fairy lights 'lilly lights', but that this was something my grandad invented!

He also insisited the sun was called Phoebe. DH thinks I'm mad when we're driving along, and the clouds part and I proclaim "oh lovely - Phoebe's out"!

Phoebus Apollo, a figure in Greek and Roman mythology, god of sun, medicine, music, poetry, and sciences. Apollo's chief epithet was Phoebus, literally "bright".

@DoneWithHer , I’ve never worn underwear to bed and neither have my children. Airing is important!

… important for what exactly? genuinely curious

Showdogworkingdog · 09/08/2023 20:47

I always polish an apple on my clothes before I eat it. I’ve done it forever without giving it a thought until my colleagues asked wtf I’m doing. My DC do too. Sorry kids.

TheoTheopolis23 · 09/08/2023 20:48

Strangers say hello on walks

Is this not fairly standard in not densely populated regions?

I'm from N.I. and anyone who didn't say hello outside of cities when you pass then would he considered pretty rude. Any situation in which there isn't a crowd passing each other would he a say hello/morning etc. situation.

SoSo99 · 09/08/2023 20:48

The mushroom comments have reminded me about Brussel sprouts (I'm a hugs fan). At home we spent ages peeling off the outer leaves then cutting a cross in them. I was flabbergasted at uni when someone just cooked them, no prep, and they tasted just fine.
When i cook them now I still can't help peeling (but I've now moved on from boiled to roasted...delicious).
Still can't help peeling mushrooms. An.old housemate used to pick them as a job, and told me they were grown in pig shit.

Thehop · 09/08/2023 20:50

My brother believed the ends of bananas were their bums and called them a bananus. Like they were alive, before they were picked.

elrider · 09/08/2023 20:51

Re towels - we pick out any (they're all white) bath towel, keep it in designated places and wash when needed, so we don't share bath towels. However, I'm perplexed by the suggestion that people should have separate hand towels. How does that work? I've only ever known houses to have one hand towel in each bathroom. Do you have multiple hand towels in each bathroom, or go to your bedroom to fetch your own hand towel each time you're using the toilet?!

Re tables - I grew up with sofa meals and table meals only happened for Christmas/with guests. We mostly lived off frozen food that was easy to eat off your lap. Occasionally pasta which was fine too. DH and I also ate on the sofa in our first place as it was so small, there was no space for a table anywhere, and we were fine with it anyhow. As soon as our first child started weaning (after having moved house), we switched to a table to eat together, and have had every meal at a table for the past 6 years as a result. The eldest would spill or smear food all over the sofa and carpet, and the youngest is in the high chair and throwing food about stage, so yes, even Dominoes is eaten at the table! Never thought I'd say that! 😅

midlander79 · 09/08/2023 20:52

I didn't know until last year that ANYONE peeled mushrooms and I am still not convinced that they even have a peel. My GF peels them and I find it so odd I seldom even bother washing them

Thehop · 09/08/2023 20:52

I also thought, until I went on it, that the euro tunnel was like the tunnel
in an aquarium and I would see the fish as we went through it.
