Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

I always held the towel for my father when he washed his hands. The oldest man at the table got served first. You had to have the radio on all of the time.

My mother told me and my sister growing up it is important not to wear knickers going to bed to air out your privates, so we would just wear pyjamas, no underwear. Genuinely thought this was as normal as brushing your teeth until a convo came up recently about it and a lot of my friends were horrified! 😅

Cold crumble always! Cook it early in the day and let it go cold. I heat it for people who want it warm but always served cold for me 👌

Never worn knickers to bed and don’t know anyone who does 🤔

muddlingthrou · 09/08/2023 19:20

@Nevermay - amazing! This is great inspiration for us with our toddler 😂

"If you rent you don't pay council tax"...

That's not correct, unless you are a student, a lodger or live in a HMO. Tenants pay council tax if they rent the entire property.

its true tenants usually pay the council tax on the property, if only one person is living there its silly for it to be included in the tenancy agreement (some ll used to put it in the tenancy agreement that they'd pay the council tax - but its rare) as if only one person is living int he property then the council tax is being charged at 100% whereas they could get 75% charge if it was the person renting paying.

I didn’t know that you didn’t have to stand up to listen to the Queen’s speech on Christmas Day. My dad made us do this every year, and it was only when we got to non-gullible age, we realised that he’d been having us on for years…

My mum made us stand too!

muddlingthrou · 09/08/2023 19:24

@DoneWithHer - I only heard about the no knickers in bed rule at 25 from one of my best friends. I've done it regularly ever since, and I think it is good for you!

Especially if you don't wear cotton underwear, it's good to air things out.

@SpanielsMatter
Do.you mean you thought people who rented didn't pay council tax? As we do :(

That poster is in New Zealand, so not talking about the UK (a lot of posters have missed the reference to Kiwis and been mistaken!).

Ummm what...?

I can't tell if this comment is a joke or if someone needs to break some news to you about haggis.

If you’re Scottish, you know that haggis have 2 long legs and 2 short legs so they can stand on the hills.

(We know haggis aren’t real but that’s what we say about them.)

Ah I see...my brother and family live in nz.. I stupidly thought rest of comments were from a point when lived there doh

Justanotherlurker · 09/08/2023 19:29

Always had Yorkies for desert as well, had them with Bramble sauce and the Chinese equivalent, my parents used to have it back in China from my grandparents not yorkies but fired batter and sweet sauce, I'm pretty certain it is a thing the Dutch do as well.

@Applescruffle are you possibly from Yorkshire ( or Lancashire!)

Depending on which part of Yorkshire you're from it would be OUTRAGEOUS (picture Bingo on the seesaw, I presume you also love Bluey) to fill them with sweet stuff. Onion gravy as a starter or with your meal ONLY!

The Gatwick train is brilliant, @Applescruffle . I always use the train to airports because it literally takes you right into the middle of it! No parking worries, or traffic anxieties. Much more pleasant.

We always used the train to Manchester airport, again much easier than driving and paying a fortune to park.

Porridge made with added evapourated milk and golden syrup and sausages with marmalade for breakfast. I thought everyone had it.

My dad would eat yorkshire puddings for desert with golden syrup and vamilla ice cream too, he was born in 1928 so maybe a wartime thing.

Also every sunday, we had slices of bread and butter, a plate with cheese to help ourselves, cake etc. Im old though, im 58 so maybe its generational. Also use to have lettuce with sugar and vinegar and thought it was normal.

On the fairy bread theme, my mum used to have bread and butter with sugar sprinkled on it as a snack. - Scottish.

We did this too in the north east.

We had sausages with marmalade at boarding school. It had the effect of a sweet chutney.

My daughter spent years convinced that light switches were there to turn the darkness on

Genius. And my absolute favourite. 💡

Greengeranium · 09/08/2023 19:38

A chopped up raw onion on a slice of brown bread as a cure for when I had a cold.

White bread and butter crisp sandwiches. Grew up on these but my husband is horrified my them.

Ate one last week, we love them, sometimes I have a dairylea spread instead of butter.
love chip butties too.

Thursa · 09/08/2023 19:41

I was an embarrassingly long way into adulthood before I realised mum and granny didn’t prefer picking at the chicken carcass, there wasn’t enough to go round. They also never sat at the table with us, but waited in the kitchen to see what was leftover for their meal.

JayJayj · 09/08/2023 19:41

I used to put butter and sugar on Yorkshire puds as a kid. I also used to peel mushrooms but I stopped a few years ago.
