Things you didn't know weren't normal

What are things you thought every one or every family did until you became an adult or entered a new relationship?

I'll start. I thought that everyone ate the leftover yorkshires after a roast dinner as desert eg: fill them with cream and fruit or custard or something, basically use them like you would a pancake... no?

I thought everyone peeled mushrooms, I didn't know that not only do people not peel mushrooms, lots don't even know they have peel!! 😱

I'll probably think of more.

Nb: I'm not meaning to trigger anyone's childhood or relationship trauma, I just mean lighthearted things x

The sprinkles they put on bread in the Netherlands (hagelslag) are not the same as our hundreds and thousands. They’re bigger and a different texture. They’re lovely on waffles!
They also have chocolate flakes too (vlokken).

Tuna and beans on jacket potato!!

FreeRider · 09/08/2023 00:08

@BMIwoes The no hall/porch thing really freaked me out when I first came to the UK...I still don't like it to be honest.

I also hated twilight (not the films, never seen them, the actual 'thing') when I first came here as a 9 year old. I was used to it being pitch black by 6.30pm all year round...it still being light at 10pm freaked me out!

How many people are missing that @SpanielsMatter is NOT referring to the U.K. hence the Culture Shock!

But there aren't British style 'councils' in many places abroad, or there are but they're not called councils.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/08/2023 00:15

And if somebody has a baby, you get aniseed ones called "muisjes" on something a bit like Melba toast. Pink and white for a girl, blue and white for a boy.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/08/2023 22:39

Did anyone else's mum make cinnamon toast for them? Toast, butter, white sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top?

Not my mum, but it's a fond memory of boarding school, along with peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

Oh god, we share towels. Never thought it was weird. 🫢

Me neither? We just have a pile and you grab the one you want.. do people have differ t colours or something, how do you know it's yours?

PB, banana and honey on toast. 😋

My husband and his family eat salad cream on toast.
I have joined him in this

Try pink cocktail sauce, it's delicious. Just as nice on buttered bread, too.

This thread has made me remember that there was a relative we used to visit who served these oat pancake things. You soaked oats overnight with milk, then added an egg and mixed. You then fried little pancake/griddle cakes in oil and ate with salt and pepper (or honey). I have just tried googling them and cannot find anything similar - they weren't oatcakes because you are them when they were hot and soft not dried out. Was this just some personal invention or has anyone else come across this?

I've never come across them myself but they sound like a stellar idea.

Mamanyt · 09/08/2023 00:34

I aIways thought that you couId NOT wash mushrooms, as they wouId "soak up the water." OnIy found out about 15 years ago (and I'm 70) that they do NOT. The weight of a mushroom simpIy brushed free of dirt onIy changes about 1% when washed. I've been happiIy scrubbing the IittIe beggars since then, and they cook/taste JUST FINE!

Ooh not tried those. Will look out for them, thanks.

Butterflywings2 · 09/08/2023 00:38

Has anyone watched a cookery show and the chef has peeled mushrooms. They are not for peeling 🤣🤣🤣

SalviaDivinorum · 09/08/2023 00:42

Limitedisall · 08/08/2023 20:34

@Applescruffle definitely milk! Just normal milk. Not even "top of the milk" when that still existed.

Yes I do love him very much. Just as well as our kids followed that particular family tradition of his Shock

DH’s family do that. I don’t understand it at all.

Neither I nor the DC do it so hopefully will die out with him!

TurquoiseThings · 09/08/2023 00:45

@fullbloom87 "I didn't realise Christmas jumper day at my kids school meant they went in with a Christmas style jumper so would stay up sewing ball balls onto normal jumpers"

Here's something else you've learned today: the word you're looking for is baubles!

So many women seem to think it's important not to wear knickers in bed, as my mother used to say, to air it out! What are you doing? laying in bed with your legs spread apart and no covers on?? Because it's not getting aired out if your legs are closed, you're wearing pyjamas and are covered in a fucking duvet!! 😂

And peeling mushrooms? Christ, have you nothing better to do!

Everyone has different coloured towels in my house. I don't want to dry my face where someone else has rubbed their arse dry.

Thomasina79 · 09/08/2023 00:53

My parents were very heavy smokers, as was my grandfather. I grew thinking that smoking was what you automatically did as a adul.t. did smoke for around 10 years then gave it up forever.

Nowthenhere · 08/08/2023 19:48

Dad's doing housework without having instructions?
Dad's parenting without it being called "looking after" their own.
Dad's knowing how to put their daughter's hair together before school as a little?
All the dad's I was surrounded by took their parenting decisions on 100%.
"No, dad will pick us up from dance if your mum or dad takes" was pretty normal.
And school work wasn't mum or dad specific, some mums were great at maths and others helped with English homework. "My dad helped me learn my timetable over the weekend" etc wasn't all mum.

Seeing my dad hand out the washing mum had loaded was normal to me. There were no gender roles, I saw mums help with fixing bikes for their children and dad's cleaning grazed knees.

This is less spoken about now if it's still a thing.

Where do you come from @Nowthenhere - this is so interesting. I remember being shocked when a friend's dad cooked tea in the 80s (it made me a feminist) but I still don't think I've come across a place as gender-free as you describe even forty years on.

I believed until last year (mid 30s) that Scotland Yard was in Scotland.
I always wondered why when they did press conferences they weren't Scottish & seemed to only cover stories that happened in London 🤦‍♀️

So did I 🤦🏼‍♀️

Applescruffle · 09/08/2023 00:57

I don't even like mushrooms and neither do my husband and kids so I don't cook them or peel them at all.
Bit of a weird thing to say though. Presumably you don't think peeling potatoes or carrots or other fruit and veg is a waste of time? It's just a method of food prep.
My mum did it so like most kids would, I assumed that was the way it was done.

My family always have Yorkshire puddings first with mushy peas, gravy and mint sauce. I thought everyone did it until a few years ago and I'm in my 30's 😂

My Grandma would serve homemade yorkies like this before the main course

TurquoiseThings · 09/08/2023 01:11

@Applescruffle "Presumably you don't think peeling potatoes or carrots or other fruit and veg is a waste of time?"

No because the skin on potatoes and carrots can be tough, but the skin on mushrooms isn't. This thread is about things you thought were normal right? Well I thought it was normal NOT to peel mushrooms 🤷🏻‍♀️ also I can peel potatoes and carrots really fast but peeling mushrooms seems like a laborious process but maybe that's just me.

My friend's Mum did this on sleepovers, yum.

recyclemeagain · 09/08/2023 01:15

@Borris how funny! I have read ballache as ba-lash forever and only today admitted this to my friend who found it hilarious. I am so happy to find other people read it like I do!!

@Mumtobabyhavoc yes I remember my mum making us cinnamon toast too! It really is tasty, I'll need to try doing some again soon it's been ages.

chicjen · 09/08/2023 01:18

I didn't realise that when a visitor leaves someone's house, other families don't all stand up and wave from the window until their relative/friend has gone out of sight.
My parents and us kids used to all stand up and wave goodbye to each other until we couldn't see each other any more, I thought everyone did this too!
Then I stood waving for ages to a friend years later (in my 20s) and she said it freaked her out. To be fair it probably would be kind of weird if you're not used to it. Never realised it could be weird!
