Am I the only one looking my age?

AhNow123 · 08/08/2023 18:03

I seem to be surrounded by women at work, friends, on the tv etc who look far younger than their age and itโ€™s wrecking my head ๐Ÿ˜‚. I am someone who nobody is surprised when I say Iโ€™m 48, thereโ€™s no โ€œomg I thought you were in your 30s!โ€, people just nod (probably thinking โ€˜I thought she was in her 50sโ€™). I have wrinkles around my eyes and a wrinkly neck and also baggy eyelids - I am paining a sexy picture here I know.

i donโ€™t obsess about this but it just seems a bit unfair when so many women around me look so youthful and fabulous. I am no frump and have a young mindset, I just donโ€™t have the neck to match!! Anyone relate, or can tell me where to find this mystical youth elixir that everyone else is bloody drinking?!

Day to day I think most people look their age. Don't get me wrong you can look fab at any age but I think it's rare to look considerably younger.

And many women on TV have a sort of frozen, plastic property. I thought that about Emily Blunt with all the film promo lately, the two male costars just look like normal but her forehead was all fixed and smooth... Like her face wasn't real. To me this isn't youthful, I'd prefer to see a normal face.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/08/2023 18:13

You are not alone OP, nobody looks shocked when I tell them my age either (the bastards Grin)

QueefQueen80s · 08/08/2023 18:18

Everyone looks their age to me, there is always a sign. Some people look different ie botox or hair extensions etc but to me they look their age but with those things. And there's nothing wrong with either!
Petite women who get ID'd look their age to me. I think the people who think they don't aren't looking at people properly.

BeckyBlue · 08/08/2023 18:18

I look okay I think, but no, no one is ever shocked when I say my age, or talk about my young adult children etc.

I've even taken to announcing my age even though no one has asked it, just on the off chance that they were going to allude to me being far older than I am Grin

imapterodactyl · 08/08/2023 18:32

I used to be told I looked a lot younger until I turned 40. Now people just nod if I say my age. I blame the kids tbh, I'm too busy or tired now to make the same effort I used to. I barely remember to drink water any more and mostly survive on coffee and adrenaline.

I like to think that if I started my old fitness and healthy eating regime I'd drop a few years. I daren't try it in case I don't and then only have injectables left in my arsenal ๐Ÿ˜‚. My budget doesn't allow for that yet sadly otherwise I'd be straight there.

Mystro202 · 08/08/2023 19:00

I got asked for ID in Asda about two years ago aged 36 when buying alcohol. I was ecstatic lol. That is a rare occasion now though. However when I was in my late 20's I always got asked when I went to bars etc. Always looked under 21 back then!

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 08/08/2023 19:22

At first glance I think I look quite young. Iโ€™m short, slim and quite baby faced. But if you look closer youโ€™ll see Iโ€™m late 30s and not in my 20s like you may think if you donโ€™t look properly. My skin just doesnโ€™t have the same elasticity as peoples who are actually 10 years younger.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 08/08/2023 19:23

I do occasionally still get asked for Id though. But Mostly by older people these days.

cheezncrackers · 08/08/2023 19:25

Where do you live OP? Around here (wealthy area in SE), I'd say it's the norm for women 40+ to have a few tweakments i.e. Botox, filler, laser treatments, other stuff. You can easily see who does and who doesn't.

Runnerduck34 · 08/08/2023 19:30

I am definitely looking my age.
Serious deep wrinkes in forehead, marionette lines and when I smile my cheeks crinkle.
I know what you mean OP, i keep looking at people on the tv- not even film stars people like fiona bruce and i think how do they look so youthful?! This is also true of others same age as me in real life- I just think im aging badly :(
my diet could be better, i could exercise more and maybe im not blessed with the right genes but still.....
Although I agree that people generally look within 5 years or so of their age, if you look closely enough.

stickygotstuck · 08/08/2023 19:31

OP, say you're 5 or 6 years older than you are. Everybody will tell you look younger ๐Ÿ˜‰. My mum did that for years, it cheered her up.

Zipps · 08/08/2023 19:49

I'm mid 50's. People always say I don't look it but I think I do, they're just being kind or it could be that I spend quite a bit of money and time on looks. Cosmetic dental work, teeth whitening, skincare, nice clothes, exercise, good diet, no smoking, barely drink, retired early, no money worries etc. I suppose I'd look a lot different if I didn't do all that. I think what they mean is that I look reasonable for my age.

magicalkitty · 08/08/2023 19:52

I think most people look their age, just some people look healthier and more attractive than others.

Or have had a lot more Botox and fillers.

AhNow123 · 08/08/2023 22:14

Thanks for all of your replies, and in the nicest possible way itโ€™s a relief many of you are also looking your age! Thatโ€™s interesting that several of you said that most people look their age. One thing I find a bit therapeutic is to google actresses that were around before everything got goop-ified, like Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda etc, and at my age of 48, they had the wrinkles.

So, thanks for the free therapy. Might even give the magnifying mirror a miss tonight ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I think most people look their age if you look properly, but some people are certainly more wrinkly than others, which does make it more obvious at first glance.

I guess you either say fuck it and be a cool lady with lines, or investigate what you can do about it.

Spudlover · 08/08/2023 23:23

I used to look younger than I am. I was last IDโ€™d buying booze for a festival at 44.

It then turned on a sixpence very rapidly and now no-one is remotely surprised. I turn 50 this weekend and there has been zero comments!

My lifestyle isnโ€™t massively different, I drink less and stopped vaping so should be better in theory, but clearly isnโ€™t reflected in my face.

WhateverMate · 08/08/2023 23:27

Botox and filler rarely make people look younger, they just make them look better (in many cases).

Careerdilemma · 08/08/2023 23:28

Tretinoin is why many women look good for their age.

tillyandmilly · 08/08/2023 23:28

I could look younger if I didn't have the day to day money worries - canโ€™t afford any treatments- stress ages you!!

Had never heard of this and rushed to look it upโ€ฆintriguing

Iโ€™m the same age as you OP. I look early 40โ€™s.
i have Botox on the wrinkles a couple of times a year. Iโ€™m also a healthy weight and go the the gym, try not to drink too much and eat healthily.

I also donโ€™t really get stressed about things.

where I live, people are slimmer and look younger than they do elsewhere in the country, so I think the expectation keeps everyone making more of an effort.

Read what the late Nora Ephron wrote about her neck.
