How are Asda own items more expensive than brand items now?

Don't usually shop there but nipped in for stuff to make tacos yesterday.

12 Old El Paso taco shells £1.90
12 Asda taco shells £2.10

I mean who is going to choose the Asda ones? Isn't the whole point of own brand to be a cheaper alternative to branded?

It'll be a glitch where one has moved price and probably follows a Tesco price change or something, and the other hasn't, bet its changed by next week.
I would always get the branded one too if I saw it!

They are in serious trouble since the takeover, the owners are trying to sell a lot of the stores.

I don't know, is it? I will get whatever I like that is cheapest/best value, which may be own brand or branded when on offer.

However, I don't subscribe to the idea that branded is automatically better than own brand. Some brands, I actively dislike, for example, Heinz. For taco shells, I'd strongly suspect that they're all made in the same factory and could indeed be exactly the same, so from that choice, I'd be getting 2 packs of Old El Paso, because then they're £3.

Asda have lost the plot. I seldom shop there now.

WhatFreshHell1 · 07/08/2023 11:37

I rarely shop there but last time I did I couldn’t believe how expensive it was. Sticking with Aldi and Sainsburys.

It wasn't just these. I saw several things where the Asda version was dearer.

This was just the example I used.

I love asda but they have really increased the price. A lot. And frequently too! We are 6 kids, 2 adults and it is so difficult because of cost of living, we are spending between 200 to 250 a week on food. I think they increase the prices every week because every time I shop online, I feel like its gone Up! But I dont want to shop anywhere else to be honest.

I find some of their own brand expensive and certain named brands cheaper. I also think their own essentials have gone up and they're not great either. Bland and plastic-y.

I also have to send stuff back because the substitutes are bizzare also! We order halal chicken mini fillets and they give us pork stuffed chicken whole. Or give us pepperoni pizza. Its not like I am going to burst into fire at them when they deliver to us, but I have to then cancel it and get the refund to then go out again to town which is half hour drive just to get the pizza again myself!
I'd be happy with another cheese pizza, they can't be completely out of every single cheese pizza!

I do however like the cashpot idea! But does anyone know if its only on selected items? Is it not like Tesco club card points, does anyone know? I don't shop at tesco or know about club card really.

Not the point of the thread I know (it doesn't make any sense though, no), but I was just more shocked at how cheap these are.....

I am not in the UK obvs, and we pay more than triple the price for these.

ArthnoldManacatsaman · 07/08/2023 13:05

@PopsicleHustler you earn in 2 ways - firstly by completing ‘missions’ in which you have a certain time to spend a certain amount, eg spend £12 on bakery items in 10 days, or 5 shops of over £5 during June, to get your reward; secondly you get bonus amounts for buying selected products either a percentage bonus or an amount. It did take me a while to get my head round it!

ArthnoldManacatsaman · 07/08/2023 13:08

@PopsicleHustler oops meant to say the difference with Tesco Clubcard is that with them (and some others) you get points per spend plus selected items are cheaper for Clubcard holders, quite significantly so in some cases which people have complained about

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/08/2023 13:20

Tesco have introduced a new "meal kit" brand which was more expensive than Old El Paso yesterday.

Maybe something is going on with Old El Paso to sell their stuff really cheap?

Thesearmsofmine · 07/08/2023 13:26

I switched from Asda to Sainsburys earlier this years as every week the products at Asda were going up in price and it was no longer the cheaper option.

BirkinBrittanyJane · 07/08/2023 13:35

Cost cutting measures.
Regrettably, the UK lags significantly behind leading countries in terms of economic progress, and there appears to be no immediate prospect of change. Compared to the UK, the US is 39% wealthier, while France and Germany exhibit considerably higher productivity. It is common for gas station and grocery store managers in the US to earn three times the median income in the UK. Furthermore, the starting salary for nurses in the US is roughly twice that of their UK counterparts.

Not ruling the waves anymore...

How is that cost cutting measures? I get everything else but don't understand that bit.

Oops! Meant to post on a thread about low quality food.

CornishGem1975 · 07/08/2023 13:38

Asda has gone up so much. It's more expensive than Sainsburys for my regular items.

ChipshopPickledEgg · 07/08/2023 13:44

Really dislike Asda since the turn over even the 10% blue light isn't encouraging to me anymore.

Bellabatwings · 07/08/2023 13:55

Asda own label food (especially meat) is very poor quality, the prices no longer reflect this, the shop local to me is dirty, poorly stocked and over priced.
Sainsbury blows them out the water for quality and now, price too

PopsicleHustler · 07/08/2023 14:13

@Thesearmsofmine how are you finding sainsbury?

PopsicleHustler · 07/08/2023 14:14

Thanks for that help and explanation @ArthnoldManacatsaman I might start looking at where else I can shop that also does halal meat

The brothers are in a pickle. Watched one in front of the select committee he was absolutely drowning, couldn't form a sentence. They're garage forecourt guys who've overreached.

Zoopet · 07/08/2023 14:19

Does this affect Asda petrol prices too?
I have noticed that the prices are steadily creeing up at my local store but other branches are cheaper!

Zoopet · 07/08/2023 14:20

*creeping.
