To hate the nights drawing in ..

in August. I mean this is the height of the summer holidays. Festivals, bank holidays, kids off school but by the end of August it will be dark at 8pm down south. It’s just so depressing knowing that in 2 months it will be dark before ai finish work

By October I’m over it as it’s clearly time for winter but it’s so horrible feeling the sunny days slip away before the actual end of summer.
I love the long evenings but the weather is temperamental in Spring and it’s hard to make the most of them when things are just warming up.May and June are great and then it’s all downhill. I really noticed the earlier sunset tonight and I’m not ready for it.

I'm really feeling the lack of sunshine. I'm achy and tired and fed up. I feel like my vitamin D is lower than it should be for August and I haven't had my usual recharge. Now it's getting dark earlier and we've had no chance to enjoy the light evenings really. Other than just a few days in June there have been no sunny days and it's awful. Winter is going to be long and difficult without a summer recharge.

Stay light all year to 10 pm?! You have just described my worst nightmare!

Me too. Made me a bit tense just thinking about that.

TheSingingBean · 07/08/2023 16:00

I get it OP, I'm similar. I feel as though I want to hibernate when the days get darker. And though we had that amazing spring and early summer, the weather here has been so dismal through July, it's a bit depressing.

My dear friend and I used to phone one another every 21 June and 21 December. In June we'd say something like 'Buckle up!' and in December 'We've made it!!'....... we were both very conscious of the changing light and the effect it had on our mental health. Sadly she died a couple of years ago and I miss that little ritual we shared, and the random texts saying 'Two minutes more light today!'

There are some lovely threads on here though in which people share the things they're looking forward to in the autumn / winter, and I have taken to reading them to remind myself that there are some nice things to coming as well....... drinking red wine by the fire, the autumn colour of the trees, casseroles and crumbles, lighting the candles in the evening. I try to be positive cos it's coming anyway!

DrCoconut · 07/08/2023 16:04

I had crumble for pudding at our family's Father's Day meal.

I could happily live with it never getting dark. Sweden in the summer is my idea of heaven light wise

EvenlyDetermined · 08/08/2023 07:13

Yes, when I've travelled to Scandinavia (always in summer) I've felt invigorated by the endless daylight.

There is plenty to like about autumn/winter, crisp frosts, autumn colours, but the darkness is so depressing.

Whereas there are those on this thread who find long light evenings tense and draining. So strange how different we all are! But I won't be applying to move to Sweden anytime soon 😉

EvenlyDetermined · 08/08/2023 08:30

I'll concede that dark evenings are good for Christmas lights but if it could just be December that would be perfect for me.

TakeNoNoticeoftheNoise · 08/08/2023 08:34

I love Autumn and the different feel to the days, the nights drawing in but it somehow feels a bit different this year as we've had such a poor summer. It's much better when we've had a long hot summer (like last year) and the cooler days and darker evenings start to draw in.

I'm not a Christmas lover though, so I have a bit of a cloud over it as it means the dreaded C word is getting closer. All that forced family frivolity, urgh!

hexsnidgett · 06/08/2023 21:31

It seems a funny thing to let bother you. It's not as if you can do anything about it.

Really? Winter literally causes depression in many people.

LadyBird1973 · 08/08/2023 08:48

We might get a nice bright, warm September. I wouldn't give up hope yet, even though so far July snd August have been a bit rubbish.

shelbaby · 08/08/2023 10:26

I'm same. Can see the leaves on the big tree in my garden starting to turn a little yellow in parts. I've just looked out and there's already some brown ones fallen off 🙁

I know it happens every year but I can't help moan about it. Especially when we've had practically no real summer this year. Currently 14 degrees and raining...again 😭

I really dread the dark mornings it's so hard to get up and the kids too. Just feels so depressing.

ssd · 08/08/2023 10:49

I love the darker nights. It makes me feel less guilty for staying in and hunkering down.

I hate sitting in the sun, flip flops, summer clothes etc. My idea of hell is the sun on my bare shoulders.

Just as well i live in Scotland.

EvenlyDetermined · 08/08/2023 10:55

I hate the feel of hot sun on my bare shoulders etc too, but that's why I like long, light evenings, it's warm enough to sit out or be out doing things but no sunburn or overheating. I tend to stay indoors during the middle of the day in hot weather.

floribunda18 · 08/08/2023 10:58

It happens every year. Why not just appreciate each time of year for what it is, instead of wallowing in misery?

Personally I really like the seasons in the UK. If I wanted more steady light and conditions all year round I'd live somewhere nearer the equator.

I actually feel rather shiftless, restless at the lack of routine and not quite myself in August, until towards the end when the sun is in Virgo, though of course I enjoy going on holiday. The garden looks past its best and everything is starting to go to seed- or bear fruit, of course and the weather is often rather autumnal. September is a time of new beginnings as well as the end of summer.

floribunda18 · 08/08/2023 11:00

Darker nights tend to mean better sleep quality, for me.

I wake really early in summer, mostly going back to sleep but not always.

If we could have something resembling a summer first - i.e. a minimum a few consecutive weeks of sustained sunshine without grey cloud/ wind/ rain (short thunder storms to clear humidity are acceptable as long as they bugger off quickly afterwards) and actual summer temperatures of at least 25° plus each day - then it might be more bearable to be seeing the signs already that we are heading into yet another miserable and seemingly endless winter. As it stands, it is thoroughly depressing.

Exactly. If we were able to get our Vit D in for a few months I think it would be so much better. It's been raining pretty much constantly since beginning of July. That really tough of you suffer SAD.
We go through crappy months of Jan, Feb, March. A couple of sunny days in April/June, then it's just shit for the rest of the year.

Merapi · 08/08/2023 14:15

Lovehearts82 · 06/08/2023 21:36

I'm the opposite, I love the "ber" months. Crisp, sunny Autumn days in September and October are my faves 🍂 darker cosy evenings.

Me too.

Seasons?! 😂 They're all rolled into one nowadays.
No snow in winter and rain all summer.

Not sure how you 'appreciate' that.

Me too. Made me a bit tense just thinking about that.

Long light evenings always remind me of being a child and going to bed at 8pm and it being broad daylight still. Light till 10pm all year? no thanks. And of course in December that would mean it didn't get light until 2pm.

artishard · 08/08/2023 14:28

I actually love the feeling of moving towards winter and the evenings drawing in. I especially appreciate it getting light later in the mornings- I work late shifts and struggle to sleep adequately in the summer when it's getting light at 5am, meaning I'm being woken up after 5 hours sleep or so. I appreciate this isnt the case if you've got to drag yourself up at 6am when it's pitch black outside, but it suits me just fine!

I used to have to do this for work. By the middle of February it felt like the mornings were never going to get light. When I left that job I'd still wake up arly but just lie there enjoying that I didn't have to get up.

Hypothetically I'd want light mornings too, broad daylight by about 6 all year round would be great. I never go to bed as early as 10 so wouldn't be going to sleep in daylight if it was light till 10 (but wouldn't have a problem with it TBH) but I love waking up in a room flooded with light.

ThreeRingCircus · 08/08/2023 14:52

Normally I absolutely love the nights drawing in, autumn and winter are seasons I really enjoy. However, that's after a summer where I've been sunbathing, sitting in the garden til late at night, bbqs and drinks with friends, the children playing in the garden during the summer holidays etc. We've only had one or two days of that this summer holidays so far and it feels like such a shame. This year for the first year ever I'm feeling quite down about it and I'm sure it's because summer feels like it'll soon be over and never really got started.
