To hate the nights drawing in ..

in August. I mean this is the height of the summer holidays. Festivals, bank holidays, kids off school but by the end of August it will be dark at 8pm down south. It’s just so depressing knowing that in 2 months it will be dark before ai finish work

By October I’m over it as it’s clearly time for winter but it’s so horrible feeling the sunny days slip away before the actual end of summer.
I love the long evenings but the weather is temperamental in Spring and it’s hard to make the most of them when things are just warming up.May and June are great and then it’s all downhill. I really noticed the earlier sunset tonight and I’m not ready for it.

Not having a proper summer is hard. I'm already upping my vitamin D to try to get on top of the low mood winter brings me.

Same!

Mischance · 06/08/2023 22:45

They are not drawing in - really they are not - don't even suggest it!

I look forward to the autumn and winter. I find dark evenings comforting.

I can’t drive in the dark anymore. I’m probably going to have to give up my current job in October as it involves lots of driving. Goodness knows what I am going to do instead as there isn’t much else and very limited public transport.

I hate going back to inside drying and damp smelling washing, icy mornings and defrosting the windscreen (even when it is light enough to drive), slipping over, expensive clothes like boots, jumpers and tights rather than cheap flip flops and vest tops. Hate the garden looking shit, Christmas starting just after Halloween ( one more month before the shops are full of tat again) and colds. Mostly I hate that after work there’s very little you can do that doesn’t cost a fortune or is a massive effort.
Summer is so easy. Just being out in the evening going for a quick walk is lovely. Roll on next March.

What drives me mad are the tv/ radio/ weather presenters who, without fail every June 20th/21st/22nd etc will say "Its the longest day today which means the nights will be drawing in, and it will be getting darker earlier"
Bloody Doommongers

FGS, it's only June!!!!! I know we have had a crappy summer, but you don't hear them wittering on come December 22nd saying "Today is the shortest day so the nights will start getting lighter" So annoying.

LifeStrife · 06/08/2023 22:58

I love it! I love summer (hoping for an Indian summer) and then the lead up to Christmas! Jan, Feb and March are horrible but Summer and Autumn are magical.

Gh12345 · 06/08/2023 22:58

I’m the complete opposite and always feel drained by August of too much light

BumWad · 06/08/2023 22:59

I’m the opposite, I really love it!

WhereshallIwander · 06/08/2023 23:04

I hate it especially after such a crap summer.
I think I have SAD tbh as I get very down and depressed during winter months. I get better in summer when there is sun.
I had to start taking supplemts for Vit D this year as bloods came back low.
I can't stand it raining day after day.
If I could live abroad again with better weather, I would in a heartbeat.

mrsfollowill · 06/08/2023 23:10

This year has been very weird for weather in England. I've had the heating on the last 2 nights- just for an hour but in my part of Yorkshire it has been 15C and grey and raining for a few days ( a few weeks when I think about it) and the house felt cold and damp! We are all wearing Winter clothes- jumpers, socks & slippers not sat here in shorts. I closed all the curtains before 9pm tonight and we are being cosy. Not what should be happening in August-I should be sat outside with a big G&T in a sundress and flip flops.

MeinKraft · 06/08/2023 23:10

Summer - autumn feels like a much bigger change than the change in the other seasons. I think it's the back to school feeling and there's just something in the air when summer ends and autumn draws in. It feels more like a new year than January does.

marmiteloversunite · 06/08/2023 23:17

Feels like we've skipped August somehow and are heading into September.

Sausagedogmum · 06/08/2023 23:20

I usually love Autumn and Winter, and being cozy at home, however, I’m dreading it this year because it just costs so much to heat your home.

Seasidechippylover · 06/08/2023 23:25

Makes me feel quite miserable. Can't put my finger on it but dark days and the early sunsets always affect my moods

RoseMartha · 06/08/2023 23:31

I dont like it either OP. I did notice that it was better tonight than last night as the weather was sunny today and it was still twilight at half nine, yesterday it was the same at eight forty.

WouldYouLikeYourMuffinButtered · 06/08/2023 23:35

It's just life. Live it, and don't waste time dreading it. None of us are getting it back.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 06/08/2023 23:36

I agree, I start panicking in August about dark nights, so basically now.
I hate them, they make me utterly miserable.
I have one more outdoor show this year, (The Killers), then that's it, until next year.
Getting dark at 4pm, barely getting light on overcast days, no.

OrangeCrayon · 06/08/2023 23:41

If we could have something resembling a summer first - i.e. a minimum a few consecutive weeks of sustained sunshine without grey cloud/ wind/ rain (short thunder storms to clear humidity are acceptable as long as they bugger off quickly afterwards) and actual summer temperatures of at least 25° plus each day - then it might be more bearable to be seeing the signs already that we are heading into yet another miserable and seemingly endless winter. As it stands, it is thoroughly depressing.

This.

I'm posting from Melbourne where it's always a tug when the longest day, in December, is when summer has barely begun. Last year we had the misery of of a very cold, wet winter, cold spring and tepid summer, so I feel for those in the UK with the poor summer.

But @WouldYouLikeYourMuffinButtered is on the money about living life, not wishing it away. Bloody hard at times, though.

Great post. We are lucky to live in a country where all of our seasons are beautiful, and survivable.

bakermummy21 · 06/08/2023 23:56

Agree totally. In the spring I so look forward to the thought of light evenings, sitting outside until late! June was lovely but then July has been so disappointing. There was even some Christmas stuff in the garden centre today and loads of Halloween already in another shop. Depressing really.

100% with you, OP.
I'm in the North and noticed it was getting dark at 9pm. I have a walk at 9.30pm every night and it was too dark to see. It's 7 degrees now and cold and damp in the house. I've just got over the winter not being able to afford heating or hot water and summer is coming to an end already. I can see why rich old people go abroad for winter - like swallows - and come back in Spring.

peppermintcrisp · 07/08/2023 00:01

Yes I know exactly where you are coming from. Every year around this time I get this horrible depressing feeling. I posted last year about it.

Yes I do too. Apparently 'August blues' is a thing.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 07/08/2023 00:22

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 06/08/2023 22:33

Yes I feel exactly the same. I love summer. I suffer so badly from SAD I feel like I’m a totally different person over winter. As the season starts to turn I feel quite ill at the thought of what’s to come.

This! Nov-Feb are awful for me, I feel so low physically and emotionally that if I could sleep through it or emigrate south, I would.

Bandyarsia · 07/08/2023 00:38

I honestly can't wait. I adore the darker evenings but I am very aware I am in the minority.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 07/08/2023 01:48

I don't mind it just means I can shop for boots and coats ❤️. I love them and hats.
