How many people, and how many TVs in your house?

We currently have a TV in our main family sitting room and one in our bedroom. We're finding increasingly that the DC are dragging tonnes of toys through from the playroom into the sitting room and creating a holy mess. Thinking of getting a TV in the playroom for them but not sure. There are 3 of them and although it's nice to sit and watch the odd film with them, they'll often watch 20 mins or so then create carnage around us- it would be nice to put their film on in the playroom and then retire to the sitting room to enjoy some peace and quiet while they play 🤔 Wondering if this theory will actually work or not though. 3 TVs in a house of 5 is not excessive is it? DS (aged 6!) has asked for one in his bedroom which is an absolute hard no!

Chances are they'll still do the same, IME they want to be where the adults are.

KenIsAnAccessory · 06/08/2023 15:29

Hmm, I did wonder if it was us, rather than the TV that's the draw

We have a tv in the playroom. Sometimes they’ll watch it in there, but more often they want the comfier seats and bigger screen in the lounge …😂

We have one for a family of 5 but mine are young adults and don’t bother with TV. When they were little we had one for them to watch Disney CDs. I would do it!

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 06/08/2023 15:31

Hmm, at the age of 6 my DS can put the TV on, navigate Netflix and YouTube etc. So I wouldn't want to put a TV where I can't monitor his usage. We have three kids as well, just one TV in the living room. They have to take turns to choose the show when it's TV time during the day (I try to keep it Max 2 hours) and it's ours in the evening obviously. Works ok.

bellsandwhistles333 · 06/08/2023 15:31

We added a tv in the dining room / office as somewhere else for kids to go but it's barely been on once or twice!

Sanch1 · 06/08/2023 15:32

We have 2 for 5 of us, one in living room and one in snug. DD7 and DD10 happily sit in the snug and watch tv while we're in the other room. DD2.5 is just starting to without us but will wander between.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 06/08/2023 15:34

Older kids here, youngest a teenager, all have tvs in bedrooms, one in kitchen, one in shed and one in summer house. Also have monitors for gaming and work. We still all watch films in living room and ds often in each others rooms watching films.

Ohmylovejune · 06/08/2023 15:34

Two people.
Four TVs - large lounge one and 3 small bedroom ones which are old.
Only one is used - lounge by my husband. I very, very, rarely watch TV.

@KenIsAnAccessory

so why not turn off the TV & see??

is the 6 year old the eldest? How old are they all?

surely these days you can lock down a tv so they can only watch suitable channels?

BeyondMyWits · 06/08/2023 15:39

Four of us, one telly. Only watch it all together really, or if one of us is home alone. Young kids don't usually want to play on their own. We have a living room, no playroom, so it is easier I guess.

what age are they & how comfortable is it in there?

It not us (adults) that turn the TV on - the 6yo tends to, they'll watch for 10-20 mins (and I'll sometimes go sit with them) but then drag all the toys through, start building a den etc and then play for a few hours, either with the TV talking to itself or I'll turn it off. Sort of think they'd do the same if there was a TV in the playroom, which would mean the room is used for it's actual purpose, and a whole load less mess to clean up (I can shut the door on the playroom and don't care if its a bombsite, whereas I like the sitting room to be clear and today each night before I relax).

And yes, TV locked down so kids can only access their profiles and watch age appropriate stuff.

5 people and one TV. I am considering one for older DC’s bedroom (they are 11 and 13) but they’ve never asked.

PresentPrincess1 · 08/08/2023 22:14

3 people and one television.

ElliesNellie · 08/08/2023 22:17

5 people, 5 TVs. Youngest is 15. One in each bedroom and 1 in living room.

BrieAndChilli · 08/08/2023 22:18

We have one in the lounge. Then there is one in the conservatory but it’s not used much. Other than that computers/laptops/tablets that are used by us and teens to watch stuff on Netflix and other streaming services.

Butteredtoast55 · 08/08/2023 22:18

Five adults, one TV in the living room and one in a bedroom. We used to have the one in what was my Mum's room but gave it away after she died .

Quornflakegirl · 08/08/2023 22:33

4 people, one tv

golddustwomen · 08/08/2023 22:34

Family of 4 and we have 1 tv. Will be getting one this year for dd's bedroom though.

Hawkins009 · 08/08/2023 22:34

Mines a medium sized computer monitor, and I only use eg BBC iplayer, YouTube etc to watch prerecorded shows.

TimeToMoveIt · 08/08/2023 22:35

I had 5 tvs in a house of 3 until yesterday when my bedroom one broke

UsingChangeofName · 08/08/2023 22:36

We have more now, but everyone in our house is an adult, and the one in dd's room is one she brought back from Uni and is just being stored until she gets her own place.

When they are little, like yours, the point is they want to be where the adults are. Putting another TV in a playroom isn't going to mean you can bugger off into another room and relax with a film.

aeaeae · 08/08/2023 22:36

4 of us, 1 tv in the sitting room.

Bananasplitlady · 08/08/2023 22:37

Two of us, 1 TV. There would only be one regardless of how many people, I do not want multiple TVs in addition to phones and laptops.
