How much do you earn if female?

Just back from holidays with three other female friends, all in our 40s. We got talking about salaries and future earning aspirations. Am on 65k and might get to 75k on three years but not sure where to go beyond that as am in the public sector. My friends are similar. But not sure whether that's the norm especially as we all live in London.

Bloody hell.

Senior(ish) role in the public sector and on 46k. I thought I was doing well. And then I came here reading this, and 60k pa being seen as low.

Still, given the median is just shy of 30k I guess MN is not really representative of the norm.

Pommesdeterre · 07/08/2023 11:30

@Haruka I think if you look at average London wage for someone in their 40s - it's actually 42k. I couldnt find a figure for median and female ft but it's certainly higher than the average salary for all age groups.

I'm always baffled at people even discussing salaries with anyone.

The only people who knows my salary is my employer and my accountant.

I just can't picture sitting round a table talking about money in this way with my close friends.

Actually this secrecy around salary is one of the contributing factors to inequality, specifically one of the reason women often end up doing the same job for less money.

My job has a very clear salary pay scale so if you know my job you know what pay grade I'm on.

MoonLion · 07/08/2023 13:56

I agree with @Coffeaddict - being more open about our salaries would help with the gender pay gap.

WiggelyWooWorm · 07/08/2023 14:00

In London when I was round 35 yrs old: around £150k (no degrees)

In the Midlands, now I am 45: £70k

hby9628 · 07/08/2023 14:58

Around £30k but wfh & semi flexible so that's helpful for childcare

Delphigirl · 07/08/2023 16:35

Public sector salaries are published so a bit silly to be secretive about them. I agree that treating salaries as secret is a cause of and cements gender and other diversity gaps so it would benefit us all (except white men) to talk about it.

Pommesdeterre · 07/08/2023 16:51

So part of the reason we were talking about salaries is because we were all in sectors that were on strike this year. So it seemed relevant. Plus I've known them for years and if I know all about their kids, sex lives and hobbies why not salaries.

Of course it's not the norm OP.just look at stats rather than trawling for people personal details on social media.

This 😄.

I've got three degrees and earn just over £50k of that makes you feel better. I love my job, and know that it makes a difference to people's lives.

staycaysandvacays · 07/08/2023 18:07
