How much do you earn if female?

Pommesdeterre · 06/08/2023 11:26

Just back from holidays with three other female friends, all in our 40s. We got talking about salaries and future earning aspirations. Am on 65k and might get to 75k on three years but not sure where to go beyond that as am in the public sector. My friends are similar. But not sure whether that's the norm especially as we all live in London.

I work 2 days a week and earn €43k, age 31

This is could manage nicely!

@owens, I teach in FE (A Level), have recently qualified and work 0.8. Full time teachers work beyond full time hours, so by doing 0.8 it means I work closer to what would be full time in the corporate world. My choice but it is the only way I can stay sane. Still very low for the experience and qualifications and constant monitoring required.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 06/08/2023 15:31

Teacher, SEN primary. £37k

Ohmylovejune · 06/08/2023 15:32

Cornwall.

Was circa 80k. Now part time circa 35k.

Ragged · 06/08/2023 15:35

In my 50s earning ... maybe £30k this year? 30-40k anyway.

owins · 06/08/2023 15:35

@Lovetotravel123 that's shocking, it's appalling your salary is so low, totally understand why you choose to do 0.8, you shouldn't have to, and you should be paid much more.

There’s no ‘normal’ for full time in the corporate world. I worked long hours/signed away my rights under the working time directive as did most of my colleagues.

Fuck me. I earn £28k. When I was offered this job I was so excited to be earning this as it was a lot more than I was earning in my previous job. Seems like I should be mortified at my low salary…

Me too, it’s enough for me. Don’t feel inadequate it’s grossly unrepresentative, remember the demographic using the website.

MoonLion · 06/08/2023 15:45

@Lovetotravel123 do you really think that people in the corporate world only work 9-5? I've worked in both the private and public sector and the private sector was better paid but longer hours.

owins · 06/08/2023 15:51

@TorrentiallyWretched and you earned how much doing that? I think we can all understand the point that is being made, even if it isn't perfectly accurate.

nc14 · 06/08/2023 15:51

I dropped out of school, before A-levels, but I do a job for which most people are degree educated. I am late 30s and on £60k in London.

Lovetotravel123 · 06/08/2023 15:52

@MoonLion, no, I don’t think that because I worked in the corporate world myself and worked well beyond 9-5 and was frequently on call too. The difference is that many people on MN who work in the corporate world get £80k plus when they work long hours. Teachers don’t. But that has been discussed lots on here already and always ends up in an argument about holidays.

Leapintothelightning · 06/08/2023 16:02

I have a degree that I have done nothing with. I do an "unskilled" (disagree with that term but here we are) job which I love for £16k

So amongst my friends I am a senior academic, another is a civil servant, head of primary. So I guess not shop assistants. I was actually surprised by how little we were all earning, considering our age, level of education and jobs.

I'm 53 and winding down now. I work 2 days a week paye and self employed the rest. I make about 65k but it varies year on year. I expect it to decline yoy as retiring soon.

Sparklynewname · 06/08/2023 16:09

Full time, 21 years experience. Took me 10 years to get to this level on my pay band and it now takes 3 years to get there. £32k per year.
little opportunity to increase wage.

I find these threads so boastful and distasteful. I really must stay away from them! It's like Top Trumps for high earners.

Jeevesnotwooster · 06/08/2023 16:37

£65 k (maybe a bit more when pay rise comes through) .public sector but underpaid for career and experience. But there are other benefits, such as hours and interesting work

LuciferRising · 06/08/2023 16:40

40s. £75k. CS. Next step up to SCS would mean a compromise on work life balance. Not sure I'm willing to do it. Same with moving back into the private sector. I could earn far more but I'd lose too much.

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 06/08/2023 16:50

Early 40s, 70k, public sector, leadership role, good pension.

Why read it if you don't like it?

I personally think it's great, people should talk about their salaries more openly, and then we can all make informed decisions around what work we want to do, considering it's relative rewards. I am forever encouraging people into my profession and industry. I also find hearing about others success motivating and inspiring- we don't all have to be ground down and dissatisfied. For those for whom that is the case, it's time to make some changes (caveated with of course, for many people there are huge barriers to this).

Girasoli · 06/08/2023 17:51

Just over 20k for a 4 day week, am mid 30s.
Would like to get to 30k for my next job.

tinytemper66 · 06/08/2023 17:52

Teacher, 57 yes old and earn 52k.

Eddyraisins · 06/08/2023 17:53

Mumsnet is living up to its stigma on this thread.
Definitely is the top 40 percent of earners.
