Dental implants - looking for good names around London

I need to have an implant for my front tooth urgently. Tooth underneath crown had fractured and it fell off last week. I had it temporarily cemented back, but it's wobbly again, and I am in dear need of a good specialist in or around London. Don't mind traveling if it's an hour or so.

If you had success with dental implant, especially if it lasted 10 years or more, I would love to hear who you went to. Or anyone you can recommend via friends or family route.

Many thanks in advance for all suggestions.

I had a dental implant about 8 years ago at a dentist in SE London. I had a tooth that was root canaled after a poor dentist damaged the nerve trying to pin a shallow filling, it had been root canaled and crowned twice in an effort to save it, finally in my early thirties is failed completely.

The implant cost me about £1500 and it has been absolutely fine. Mine is a pre molar so not very visible, but it looks, feels and acts just like a real tooth. It requires some additional care - Iuse an interdental brush and have it cleaned properly by the hygienist every six months.

In terms of ths proceedure it takes a little while as you have to have the old tooth removed and then wait for the gum to heal, then they screw in the surgical steel post and wait again for it to bind with the bone, only then can they attach the tooth.

A word of warning not everyone is suitable for an implant - if you smoke, have poor gum health or low bone density they are much more likely to fail.

Definitely go for it, I am very happy with mine and feel annoyed with myself for not doing it sooner and wasting money trying to save the previous tooth.

Thanks very much, Ginmonkeyagain. This is helpful to know. Pleased to know that you're very happy with your implant and that it was worth it.

I thought that they used titanium not surgical steel for the screw. I guess it's optional? Did you choose not to have the titanium? Also, I thought that it can all be done in one session, the tooth extraction and fitting of the screw. I need it all done in one session as it's a front tooth, and I have a gummy smile with a lot of teeth showing when I speak. Can't hide nothin' that's why I am looking for recommendations of someone who's had the from teeth implant.

TBH I can't remember it could have been titanium!

I definitely had to wait between the extraction and putting in the post. The socket and gum had to heal.

That doesn't seem very expensive for an implant. I thought they cost more than that.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/08/2023 14:00

It was 8 years ago!

summergreens · 05/08/2023 14:05

Recently quoted 6.5k for the front two. As the previous poster said it'll be teeth out then 3-6 months of dentures; then the titanium goes in and three more months of dentures; then the actual teeth get fitted.

I haven't said yes yet (such a lot of money!) so interested to hear others experiences.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/08/2023 14:17

I didn't have a temporary denture as it was a side tooth that is not very visible and I could eat happily without it, so assume that kept the price down a bit

Thelnebriati · 05/08/2023 14:23

I was quoted more than £3,000 8 years ago, I don't think its an especially difficult tooth. I'm fed up with the denture.

summergreens · 05/08/2023 14:27

Sorry- meant to add it's Dr Sims I'm talking to (London based but travels I think?) ldsc.co.uk/dental-treatments/implants/

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 05/08/2023 14:35

Have you asked about having a bridge? Much cheaper and still will look fine. Far less invasive and much quicker too.

TheFlis12345 · 05/08/2023 14:41

I’m at the final stages of a double implant after a front crown failed. It’s costing £4300 through an incredible private dentist in Greater London. It’s involved a lot of stages and some additional complications due to issues with the adjoining tooth which had to be removed eventually but I have experienced zero pain throughout and the result is amazing, looking better than my original teeth.

Ebullient · 05/08/2023 15:22

Summergreens, thank you for the name and the link. Quote seems appropriate. How did you find out about Dr Sims?

It's a lot of money of course, but as these are front teeth what options but dentures do we have? None.

Regarding the stages and the dentures, I definitely read that it can be done in one sitting, the extraction and the post fitting. In fact I read it on here, if you search Mumsnet for "dental implant". Two ladies said that they had their screws fitted in the same sitting as the extraction, and that the operation took three hours, involved optional IV sedation, painkillers afterwords, but most surprising both went to work the day after, and didn't have any pain neither during nor after the procedure.

It looks like there're different approaches to it. Also from reading up on a large FB group, on the other side of the pond they wear temps. And temps can only mean that the screws had already been fitted.. Unless I miss something of course.

I had to have a tooth out recently which was a failed crown and root canal, and my dentist told me that it would have to be left for three months before I could have an implant, similar to what other PPs are saying here. Interested in what people are being quoted; he told me it would be 3K plus extra costs, which would take it to nearer 4K which I was Shock about.

Ebullient · 05/08/2023 15:27

Strictlyfanoftenyears, thanks for this. Yes, I'm aware but don't want to sacrifice a healthy tooth or two for the bridge.

The practice that did mine has been taken over now (I still go there) it is now Dental Beauty, Townley Road, Dulwich.

CraftyGin · 05/08/2023 15:34

Staines Centre of Dental Excellence has specialist implantologists. It's across the road from Staines station, so easy to get to.

Ebullient · 05/08/2023 15:42

TheFlis12345, thanks for sharing your experience. What complications did you have, if I may ask? I have a failed crown and if that tooth is pulled, like yourself I may experience complications with the adjacent tooth, which is crowned. That tooth and crown are fine though, and I'm hoping it'll be so. £4300 for a double implant seems reasonable. And aesthetically speaking replacing double front teeth may make more sense.. I had my two front crowns fitted by the same specialist at the same time. But only one has failed...

AuntieJoyce, thanks, understood. I was quoted c. £2850 by NHS Imperial College dental clinic.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/08/2023 15:52

I was offered a bridge or a deture but my dentist was clear an implant was the better long term option - both in terms of longevity and ease of care.

Razzlefrazzle · 05/08/2023 16:10

If you don't mind travelling, I would recommend the Implant Centre in Hove. I had my first implant done there 15 years ago and I've had no problems since. I had a second one done about two years ago and again no issues. They are really professional, have won industry awards and prices are about average.

Ebullient · 05/08/2023 16:17

There's a way to save on implants by doing it on a teaching course. This specialist clinic and principal have been highly recommended. The prices are eye watering especially if bone graft is needed. But they're good for front teeth. Anyways, found out that they offer this cheaper route. Other clinics must do too

As long as you really find out what it entails, Implants are not for the faint hearted. As you already have an adjacent crown, then a bridge really shouldnt do much or any damage as I imagine the existing crown would be taken off and a new crown with bridge attached. Its worth having a long chat with a dentist who can give you an informed second opinion. Including the time taken, how many appointments etc and what happens if it goes wrong. Good luck OP.

Stephen did my implants 20 years ago. He was one of the pioneers of this type of dentistry. They are still going strong.

Oh thanks very much Razzlefrazzle. I would love to know the name of the doctor you went to, thank you. Don't mind traveling, and Hove is not far. So glad it worked out brilliantly for you. Were they your front or back teeth?

Ebullient · 05/08/2023 17:10

Strictlyfanoftenyears, interesting! Thank you for the feedback. That would be easy indeed, but this wasn't the impression I got. Dentist said that my healthy tooth, one or two would have to be engaged in a bridge structure. I understood killed and ground down for a crown to provide support for the existing tooth. His recommendation was an implant, but he doesn't do them himself. I shall find out more about the bridge option. Thank you again!
