For some weird reason I have heard two unusual surnames today , Younghusband and Gotobed . Which ( in a light hearted way ) could be used to formulate a sentence -
" Gotobed younghusband !
What unusual ones do you know ?

I know a naval officer called Rippingale, which always makes me chuckle.

Blackcloids · 05/08/2023 11:48

A mr Hak did my husband's vasectomy

I'm the only person in the world with my surname because me and my late husband double barrelled our names. Individually both names are easy to pronounce, but it's very rare that anyone pronounces it correctly. Bit of a pain really!

Taught at school by Mr Rainbow and Mr Onions.

My grandmother was called Fanny Billyard. Lots of different ways of spelling Billyard (Bilyard, Billiard, Billiald, Bilyeald etc etc) but we are all related and have lived in the area where we originated since before the Domesday Book.

I corpsed at work one day when I had to deal with someone whose surname was Adebanjo. Put any first name in front of it and it becomes a complete sentence.

I know a family of Bastards, pronounced Bass-tard. My maiden name is pretty uncommon and I wish I'd double barrelled now as my married name is the second most common in the UK.

I have a colleague called Holly Day. Every time an email comes through from her, my brain adds “it would be so nice”.

I know a Mr Snowman (we’re walking in the aiiiir…)

I once shared a flight with a Mr Lillicrap.

There used to be a presenter on Channel 4 called Christopher Lillicrap.

CatOnAHotShedRoof · 05/08/2023 13:41

I came across a Mr Shirtliffe once. Never found anyone else with that name.

Always been intrigued by the surname Ugalde that's apparently only found in the Liskeard area of Cornwall.

xanthippe8 · 05/08/2023 13:43

I went to school with a lad whose surname was Onions, pronounced Oh nye ons. He was rather gorgeous!

NannyGythaOgg · 05/08/2023 13:46

Years ago I worked in a sales office with a rep with the name Mycock. You get used to it after a while but I then had a call from a company wanting a quote and the man's surname was Hiscock. I told him I didn't know the name of the rep who would be going to see him.

MissisBee · 05/08/2023 14:11

I also went to school with a Snowball. He wasn't very nice.
In my career I've met a Willy Dickie and a Jolly Joy.
Just looked up the forebears site - my married name is twice as common as my maiden name, which really surprised me. Both are rare, but my maiden name is locally quite dense.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 05/08/2023 14:12

I also worked with a Mycock. Tbh, it never stopped being funny.

LetMeEnfoldYou · 05/08/2023 14:24

I had a customer called Mrs Shite. And it was pronounced exactly as you'd expect. I turned myself inside out trying not to say her name.

There was a girl at school with the surname Cockburn which she insisted was pronounced co-burn… don’t blame her!
And a Higginbottom which we had to pronounce -botham apparently.

I like Popadec and Pendergast but not sure how unusual they are!

There was a news reader on Irish Television back in the 80s, his name was Don Cockburn, but he always pronounced it as "Co-burn".

"Good evening, welcome to the news at 9, I'm Don Co-burn"

Christopher Lillicrap was a children TV presenter.

I knew two boys who were good friends. One had the surname De’Ath and the other LeStrange. Neither that unusual as surnames but I thought they would make great names for a pair of fictional detectives.

Surnamechange · 05/08/2023 14:35

A Czech colleague had the surname Vagin. The females in the family traditionally add an ‘a’ to the surname.

Wow saw the title and came to say Gotobed but you already have!!
such a weird one.

I have met a Mr Ovary
mr Chicken
mr Christmas

and anything with Bottom in brings out my childish self

I knew all those names - not that I'm saying they're not unusual, it just struck me that they're all in your list.

I went to school with a Linda Christmas and her dad used to dress up as Father Christmas at the school fair. I worked with a Tania Chicken. She was very glamorous - not at all like a chicken. She used to introduce herself as: "Hello, my name is Tania Chicken. It's all right to laugh once but don't keep doing it. I hate my name but I love my husband."

Another schoolfriend was Andrea Ovary who insisted it was pronounced O'Very. She was very nice so I went along with it. What were her parents thinking? Andrea is an okay name, it was quite popular and a bit upmarket when I was growing up, but it's not a good match with Ovary. Also a Darren De Ath, which I suspect was Death but there was no need to pile on the misery.

Oh and the best bit of graffiti I ever saw was about a boy at school: It was: Martin Capon is a chicken." Poor boy.

limitedperiodonly · 05/08/2023 14:48

My friend named her daughter Chanel. The surname was Duck. She'd be in her 30s now. I wonder if she changed it.

Duck is not a particularly unusual name. There's nothing wrong with it either, but I always felt teaming it with a glamorous first name was a mistake. But thinking positively, it's not a name you forget.

limitedperiodonly · 05/08/2023 14:51

There was a local TV news presenter called Chris Peacock. He later began using Christopher.

loislovesstewie · 05/08/2023 15:08

Another one who has only met close relatives with my family surname. But I did know a Miss Bastard when I was young, she was very pleased to marry a man with a very common surname. Also a girl with the surname Bendy. There was a fair bit of teasing about that one.

loislovesstewie · 05/08/2023 15:09

Oh, forgot, and I went to school with a boy called Titt, sadly he was.

Ryvitas · 05/08/2023 15:21

I knew a lady called Ms Titterington.
