Drowning in unused hair conditioner. What do I do with it?

I started colouring my hair during Covid and every single box comes with a great big tube of conditioner. They are not sealed though and are clearly part of a package. I usually have one tube on the go, for after the colour application, and apart from that I use my usual conditioner. At the moment I have at least 8 tubes lurking in my bathroom cabinet. They take up lots of space I don’t have spare, but I feel it’s a waste to throw them away.

What can I do with the sodding things?

Wow, I have fairly short, thin hair and after a box dye my hair will drink that conditioner up. I’m surprised people have surplus. If I had longer hair I’d be cursing they didn’t supply enough.

Anyway, shaving cream replacement, next time you box dye rub a little around your hairline to stop bleeding / dying the skin as you would with Vaseline, it can be used to soften brushes as pp said so it’s great for make up brushes. My mum told me you can use it as a fabric softener in W bind too. Never tried it but you could experiment.

I use them upon holiday. The small tubes are ideal for saving space and weight in my wash bag.

DuploTrain · 03/08/2023 08:50

Sell them on eBay.
A lot of people particularly like the conditioner that comes with hair dye.
Even if you don’t get much money for it, at least you know it’s going to be used and not wasted.

I love this conditioner, don’t waste it on shaving legs and play dough!
Give it away on Facebook marketplace someone will collect

Justleaveitblankthen · 03/08/2023 09:03

I have lots of those. But they are sealed in little tubes (Clairol colourseal) excellent quality and I save them for Gym/swim bag and travelling.

Often leave them behind for the next Airbnbr after me.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 03/08/2023 09:05

I agree that the sachets are great and come in just the right amount.

It’s the tubes!

8 tubes? The little ones in hair dye?

Am I missing something? How is that 'so much' and 'taking up space'?!

They are not that little. And when it’s a lot of them they do take up at least half a shelf in my bathroom cabinet.

Also, it’s knowing that they just sit there, unused, lurking accusingly every time I pick up a different conditioner that makes me uncomfortable. I hate waste. I just made a risotto with a packet of rice that had expired in 2021 because I found it at the top bit of the kitchen cabinet and could not bear to throw away.

OP this is a bit niche but you can use hair conditioner to re stretch shrunken wool jumpers etc. Pour conditioner into bowl of tepid water, soak garment for maybe half an hour, then re shape garment, and let it dry.

If you have a shelf of shrunken jumpers this could be useful, but beware that making them bigger will not solve your storage problem 😀

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 03/08/2023 09:40

I do have some shrunken jumpers, actually.

I keep them on a shelf, of course, meaning to make a blanket for my dogs out of them. I will try the conditioner trick, and if it works, good, if not then the dogs will have a very soft blanket.

Definitely put it on Olio.

VeridicalVagabond · 03/08/2023 09:52

I'll be there in five minutes, I have a family of waist length curly haired monsters and we go through conditioner at an alarming rate. I'll take them off your hands immediately 😂

But yes Freecycle or Facebook to get rid, I'm sure some other Cousin It relative will be happy to have them!

00100001 · 03/08/2023 09:54

Put them on FB marketplace for free, someone will take them.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/08/2023 09:57

Use them in the final rinse for woollens.

mindutopia · 03/08/2023 11:22

Find your nearest friend with primary age children. We go through bottles of the stuff combing for nits because there's about 3 grimy kids at school with massive nit infestations and long hair that flies everywhere who are constantly spreading them around. I'm grateful for the break over the holidays, but come September, it will be back to nit combing twice a week. 😫

Whyohwhyjustwhy · 03/08/2023 11:29

I have the exact same problem! I have short hair so I don't use much conditioner anyway.
Thank you for that link @Ladyoftheknight

Bubblyb00b · 03/08/2023 12:41

As someone said before - use it for shaving! I prefer it to the shaving foam.

HoppingPavlova · 03/08/2023 12:49

Do you swim? If so slather it on your hair before swimming as it protects your hair from the chemicals in the water or salt at the beach. Then you just rinse off with water only after getting out of pool/beach. Was told this by a hairdresser and works a treat, all hair types soft and beautiful after a swim with zero damage from chemicals/salt. Do understand some people are anal about stuff with pools in the UK though, showering before actually getting in the water and so forth. We don’t have that problem here, they just put chlorine in at eye watering levels, you could likely float a turd in the pool and no one would get sick (that’s a joke, but you get the gist). Also, our sharks don’t care if you have conditioner on your hair or not🤣.

Seriously, we go through large bottles of the stuff in summer. Just cheap supermarket stuff is fine for that purpose.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 03/08/2023 17:08

Do you swim?

No although I suppose I could swim all in the conditioner that’s sitting in my bathroom. 😀

Thank you all for the suggestion.

i’ll try the felted jumper first, and will list them on Freecycle.

Food bank will take them

GeorgeSpeaks · 03/08/2023 17:43

Catch nits, use conditioner to comb them out.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 03/08/2023 17:57

Give them to the foodbank or give them away online, the tubes of conditioner you get in hair dye boxes are the best conditioner and you can't often get them anywhere else! Someone would be very glad of those.

continentallentil · 03/08/2023 17:59

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat

you can put them on the non food section of Olio

Or probably beauty banks will take them (Superdrug have drop off points I think) - I don’t think things need to be sealed, just unused
