How long has anyone waited on housing list ?

singulerdar · 03/08/2023 07:04

I registered with a housing association In 2017 so 6 years ago now.
Im currently in a 1 bed flat -luckily it's not in a block or anything -it's a converted large house so comes with a drive /back and front garden.
The flat itself is quite big but obviously has 1 bedroom.
My daughter is 6 months now so not ideal forever.
Im bidding on properties and finishing 15/256
10/269 etc etc
I've had two viewings but didn't get the houses as the people in front have snapped them up.
How long has everyone waited?
If someone comes along in band 1 they get the house.

DM and her now DH waited 14 years back in the 70s/80s as both lived with respective mothers and shared with their kids. I shared with DM, DBro had a box room. Her partner/ now,DH, shared with his DS at his mother's.

We waited 14 months when we got together and had DS1, lived in a one bed flat. That was late 80s. We were lucky! We downsized a couple of years ago under the council scheme. It took 18 months to wait for a bungalow.

My DS ex is on list with their boys. It's been 11 years. She privately rents. He is technically on list himself but knows it will not happen and has been in houseshares since they split or street homeless!

Fireandflames666 · 03/08/2023 07:27

I was being evicted by my landlord due to house sale and managed to get a house within three years, not sure why though as I was told it'd be a long time.

CouldIHaveThatInEnglishPlease · 03/08/2023 07:32

First time going from a 2 bed to a 3 bed - 7months
Been on the list for a 4 bed now for 7years. But it's now getting to the point we no longer need one as eldest is now an adult and has recently applied for a one bed herself (waiting to hear back)

singulerdar · 03/08/2023 07:33

I had been looking in to private rent 2 beds but then I would loose my 6 years on the list status
So back to square one
Not sure to just wait it out and hope I get lucky
Had a viewing for a lovely house yesterday but I was 15th and lots of people turned up -so I doubt I'll hear back

I was in 'temporary' hostel housing for 3 years.

Beezknees · 03/08/2023 09:01

Mine was around 10 months, but I was living in temporary accommodation and was in the second highest band.

x2boys · 03/08/2023 10:06

There is no point in asking how long people have waited
It depends on what's available in your area and how many n people are on the waiting list in your area .

ReformedWaywardTeen · 03/08/2023 10:16

It depends on your location OP.

Where I am in Berkshire, we private rent and it's crippling us, our rent on a very small cottage style home (2 very small bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs that was converted to a tiny bedroom where we literally just have DS in a loft bed as that's all that fits the entire room) is £1245 pcm, but that's actually lower than others are taking houses up now as they're going for anywhere up to £1400pcm.

We got told by our local council in 2014 that firstly, we can't go on the list as we are "adequately housed" for our family size, even though the rent was £1150 at that point. We were then told if we went through an evict where we were not responsible at all for being evicted it was anywhere up to 15 years for a property to become available as we would be looking for a three bed.

It's why we've just weathered every pisstake our landlord has thrown our way, including during Covid when he significantly increased our rent with no warning or discussion and with him aware we were screwed due to our joint industry and lockdown.

Most local authority now will push you towards private rent and will offer deposit guarantee schemes and assured rents for private landlords.

Simple fact is, no housing association properties have been built in any decent numbers anywhere despite a constant need for them and ever growing lists. It is probably longer here now post Covid as so many people's financial situations changed and many have had their landlords sell up.

3 years. Lived with my parents but as I was getting older it was becoming inaccessible to me. They said I could manage 3 steps but my parents house has 6. Constantly pointed this out. Was put to the top of the list pretty quickly when I complained that the reason for needing to move was the house being inaccessible.

Piscesmumma1978 · 03/08/2023 10:23

The problem is, people who don't need them anymore stay. My bil has a 3 bed house but his children have all moved out.

Not sure how that's fair on the families who need the house x

fullbloom87 · 03/08/2023 10:27

If you're in band 3 it's unlikely you'll ever get one. Especially with the way things are turning out in the country. Soon people who own houses will start getting evicted and go straight into band 1, then you have migrants.
I honestly think the only way you'll get anywhere is if you move in with someone and start sleeping in their lounge or rent a home that's in really poor conditions then get health and safety round.
We were on the list for 15 years when I was growing up, and it wasn't until we were actually homeless that we got temp accommodation and then a permanent home.

CandyCaneLane0 · 03/08/2023 10:29

I was in band 1 and waited almost 3 years

MaxwellCat · 03/08/2023 10:32

Same as you but just been told my council is getting rid of band C which is what I’m in so they won’t be housing anyone on it any longer 🙄

The fact your getting viewings is a good thing.

I'm in London in my Borougher homeless/temporary accommodation comes under band 3. Its a 10+ years wait to be housed.

I got moved to band 1 due to my situation I was then accepted for a property pretty quickly.

It does seem odd that they are allowing you to view when you are coming in at 10 or 15

Danikm151 · 03/08/2023 10:58

The true answer is how long is a piece of string… area, council policy, need all have an impact. It also relies on people moving.

have you looked at doing an exchange with someone who is looking to downsize?

Beezknees · 03/08/2023 11:22

Yeah, it does depend on area. I'm in the east midlands and it's actually not too bad for council housing. I know of people here in the second lowest band getting offers occasionally. Flats are less desirable than houses, so try bidding on flats.

LeicesterLadyLucienna · 09/01/2025 00:39

Just over 10 years and still waiting for a 3 bed. Band 3.

Annony331 · 09/01/2025 01:21

Friend married at 25 and went on list. Was offered a place a week after she turned 60.

creamsnugjumper · 09/01/2025 07:13

Reading with interest as I need to help mum with housing, she's 80 and about to run out of private income to keep paying her rent.

I'd like to get her on the council list but I'm assuming she would be a low band? We seem to have lots of rural older homes near us, and all local developers have to put in 2-3beds for housing so I wonder if our area has any!

Mamofteenager · 09/01/2025 07:28

@creamsnugjumper your mum would be be better off applying for sheltered housing and/or older person's. As both have age restrictions the wait is not as long.

Ladyj84 · 09/01/2025 08:02

Probably depends on location and size of house needed. We waited 2 years but we wanted a specific area and 3 bed near my family in north east so didn't bid for most of that time then the first time we bid we got it and been in it for 3 years now

Tubetrain · 09/01/2025 08:07

Depends where you are in the UK, but generally I think you'd be expected to use the living room as a 2nd bedroom so its 2 bed which is fine for a single person and one child..

Andoutcomethewolves · 09/01/2025 08:14

My husband waited six years, it took him ending up street homeless (well, in a tent) and coming across a support worker who strongly advocated for him to get his little flat

Honestly I do suspect he got that help because he comes across as very MC and well spoken.I'm not sure he would have if not - as a single homeless man it seems like a pretty hopeless situation (obviously not suggesting you don't present well too!) But unfortunately it seems that coming across 'well' and getting an advocate on side can really help

BlackChunkyBoots · 09/01/2025 08:16

When I moved in with my then boyfriend and his entire family we applied to go on the housing list. This was about 2001-ish, and it was to the London Borough of Southwark. Because FiL was a decent human who let us use the kitchen, bathroom and lounge we were deemed low priority. Bf (then H, then ex) asked his dad to tell the council he was chucking us out, but he refused, because he was a very moral man. We were on the list for ten years before I told the council to take us off. We'd found a PBPR place to move into.

creamsnugjumper · 09/01/2025 08:39

@Mamofteenager oh thank you I was going to start researching.
