What the hell is growing on my eyelid? (Photo) Should I be worried?

I’m concerned about this lump on my eyelid

It started out as a small spot and has gotten bigger over the past 6 weeks

I’ve used warm compresses and tried dapping salicylic acid on it to help but nothing is working

I called my GP and the receptionist told me to go to the opticians because it’s on my eyelid (my sight is fine)
However there are no optician appointments until the end of August!

For context I’m 38 weeks pregnant and have never had anything like this before

Anyone had something similar? How did you fix it?

Coffeecrumb · 02/08/2023 19:00

Can you pop into the opticians in person to "book an appointment", I know absolutely nothing about eyelid growths so could be completely wrong, but inclined to feel that the Specsavers receptionist will tell you there and then that's not something they can address, and then you can go back to doctor and say optician couldn't help?

PretendUsername · 02/08/2023 19:02

For 6 weeks growth that is really quite fast. It may start to encroach on the edge of your lashes and cause irritation so I'd want that sorted asap. If you're able to travel I'd ring around as many opticians as possible, try further afield.

Is there any way you can see a dermatologist?

Honestly I'd just force my way into a doctor's or opticians for that. They may be more willing to find an appointment if you ask in person at the optician because they can see the size of it.

Shesellsseashellsh · 02/08/2023 19:04

Looks like a granuloma. I had a very similar one on my eyelash line that grew super quickly. It was easy for the doctors to remove 👍🏼

bumblefeline · 02/08/2023 19:05

Does your area not have an emergency eye appointment service?. We have to keep two slots free every testing day for urgent appointments/minor eye conditions. Ring round a few opticians to ask.

QuarkBlisterbum · 02/08/2023 19:05

Yes I would go back to the doctors and insist on an appointment.

im no doctor by the way but this is what I think it is. More common in pregnancy. Nowt to worry about - but do insist on docs appointment so they can check and remove

Not sure what it is, but my husband had an eyelid issue, was told by GP to go to Optician, who said it was on his skin so the GP should deal with it.
So I'd phone GP and say u need urgent appt as optician says they won't go near it

Laurabeee · 02/08/2023 19:16

I think this looks like a growth of benign blood vessels (angioma) which is very common in pregnancy although you are unlucky to have this in your eyelid. I would suggest a visit to the GP and either referral to dermatology or ophthalmology. If it needs removal then it may need to be ophthalmology or plastic surgery.

It looks annoying but unlikely to be anything worrying.

Laurabeee · 02/08/2023 19:17

I agree with previous post about pyogenic granuloma which are very common in pregnancy. Very fragile growth of benign blood vessels.

Saz12 · 02/08/2023 19:22

Have you phoned or gone in person? Try face-to-face at opticians, and pharmacist. When they tell you its a gp issue, at least you can say that to receptionist.

Coffeecrumb · 02/08/2023 19:24

Thanks for your replies everyone! Much appreciated

I’ll walk into the opticians tomorrow and ask to be seen regardless of appointment times

As far as dermatologists… I emailed a few locally to me and the initial consultations start from £40 and treatments are upwards of £200!

Hoping it’s nothing serious and just another joy of pregnancy

you should get an appointment with your GP, and try to bypass the receptionist. At the very least they can send you a link to upload the photograph and a GP can get back to you if the receptionist really doesn’t think it warrants an appointment. To be frank, I think there was a miscommunication issue as a “small spot on eyelid getting worse” isn’t how I’d describe your issue. You have a bump/growth in a difficult area, it looks like it’s filled with fluid. What happens if it pops and leaks into your eyelid?

Opticians are great but they may not necessarily have access to the same resources as your GP

londonba · 02/08/2023 19:35

Also have a look at Chalazions - the placement is similar to yours.

VaccineSticker · 02/08/2023 19:36

I had fuzzy vision in one eye few years ago and opticians squeezed me in even though they were fully booked as it was an emergency app. They are generally very good prioritising cases like yours especially because you’re preg. Try not to worry. Don’t bother with GPs.

Laurabeee · 02/08/2023 19:41

You should definitely be able to see an nhs dermatologist!

Popcorndoggy · 02/08/2023 19:43

Definitely a granuloma. Grow like wildfire during pregnancy. I had one on my finger . You need to see GP

Slavica · 02/08/2023 20:22

It looks like a granuloma I had on my finger, I had it removed by a dermatologist this year. Like yours, it grew really fast, was "wet", and I could do nothing to get it to go away.
I am not in the UK, but my GP referred me to a dermatologist, it was an office procedure.

RoyalImpatience · 02/08/2023 20:29

Op can you speak to anyone at opticians about what it might be.. As in... Your confused if its gp or optician and getting around at 38 weeks pregnant is difficult?

Now you have some names thanks to mn.... You can say it might be x y z and you would like it sorted before the birth??

I'm gobsmacked no one would even look?

RoyalImpatience · 02/08/2023 20:29

On phone i mean

uncomfortablydumb53 · 02/08/2023 23:12

Can you email the photo to the surgery?
Either way, you need to be seen
I'm sure if you said you have a rapidly growing lump on your eyelid and you're in late pregnancy they would see you
Good luck

Crinkle77 · 02/08/2023 23:17

Pharmacist might be a good shout. I had an eye problem couple of months back and they gave me an antibiotic gel to put in. Sorted it right out.

Nitgel · 02/08/2023 23:24

I would go to a and e. I had a growth on my eyelid and was referred all over the place. It kept growing so i went to a and e who surgically sorted it.
