What was your favourite Enid Blyton book?

When I was a child (80s) read loads of Enid Blyton books (passed down from siblings, library etc) and in the past few months have read loads of these free online (original/early editions, none with updated texts) - prob way more than when I was a child!

Although dated in many ways I have a fondness for the "family" type EB books - (house on the corner, family at red-roofs, six bad boys) which were less well known than Famous five/secret seven etc.

Also I have read several books about EB (biography, book by her agent and a book by her daughter about her childhood) and found these really interesting, of course like all authors/famous people in general who you think you know their lives are more complex (and interesting!) and different to how one would expect and how they are "presented"

The Faraway Tree series by a million trillion miles. My DD found my old set at my mums a couple of years ago and it literally made me cry with happiness when she started reading them. An utterly wonderful set of books as a little girl

salamithumbs · 02/08/2023 14:28

I loved the Five Find Outers series, always felt a bit indignant that they didn't seem to be as popular/well known as the famous five or secret seven! I enjoyed the comedy aspect of the children constantly outwitting Mr Goon the policeman whereas I didn't find SS or FF particularly funny.

Also enjoyed:
Faraway tree
Malory Towers
Twins at St Clare's
The Naughtiest Girl in the School

OwlDoll · 02/08/2023 14:34

I loved the Enchanted Wood and Faraway Tree books when I was very young as well as the Wisihing Chair books.
I then moved on to the Five Find Outers and adored this series( I blame this for my love of teashops and chocolate eclairs).
I slighty preferred Mallory Towers to St.Clares but still devoured all the books in both series and yearned to quarantined with an illness and not be able to go to school (covid came too late for me).
I also loved the stories with Barney and Miranda the monkey and the Secret Series, Secret of Killimoon , Secret Mountain etc. which I thought were much better than the Famous Five. But my all time favourite series was the adventure stories with Dinah and Jack, Lucy-ann, Philip and Kiki the parrot. I loved them all but my all time favourite was the Valley of Adventure. To be honest I think it was the best book I have ever read as I don't think l have ever got as much enjoyment from reading any other book since.

Did anyone else read mistletoe farm? The one where the city cousins house burnt down and they had to go live with their country cousins. I loved that one too

Dasisr · 02/08/2023 14:35

@OwlDoll oh yes I loved the ones with Barney and the monkey - the R mysteries!

tattygrl · 02/08/2023 14:36

Now THIS is my kind of thread 😂

My beloved, all time favourites are Magic Faraway Tree (the whole little series) and The Famous Five. They still absolutely transport me whenever I read them now as an adult. They're my ultimate comfort-escapism.

Tortiemiaw · 02/08/2023 14:37

Oh and the 'secret' series, with Prince Paul and the swarthy bearded Baronians!

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 02/08/2023 14:38

Oh how could I have forgotten Mr Galliano's circus? I desperately wanted to run away and join that circus and live in a painted wooden caravan!

dottiedodah · 02/08/2023 14:38

Marsyas I loved Smugglers top! And the 5 book with Berta the American girl. All so good to read as a child .

Groutyonehereagain · 02/08/2023 14:39

Definitely The Magic Faraway Tree and also Smuggler Ben.

ginny93 · 02/08/2023 14:40

I loved Malory Towers and the Famous Five, as well as The Wishing Chair. I also think there was one called the Red Goblin Book or similar - I really enjoyed that too but think I found it pretty scary at the time!

icelollycraving · 02/08/2023 14:41

The Magic Faraway Tree and Mallory Towers.

ElectricToothbrush · 02/08/2023 14:43

So happy to see so much love for the Adventurers series on here. Island of Adventure I think was my all time favourite book for a long time!

But I also loved the Magic Faraway Tree and the Enchanted Wood.

When I read some Enid Blytons to my DD, or she read them herself, she found the Adventurer books extremely dated and wasn't a fan, but she also loved the Faraway Tree, along with Mallory Towers and St Clare's when she was a bit older.

sittingonacornflake · 02/08/2023 14:44

Malory towers was my absolute favourite. I grew up 'up country' and dreamed so longingly of living in Cornwall (and going to boarding school with a pool that fills up from the sea!). I didn't get my wish as a child but I have moved to Cornwall as an adult and it's as amazing as I dreamed. My child is now living my dream of gong to school in Cornwall with a swimming pool!

I also enjoyed famous five and the adventure series and in fact all 3 series i continue to enjoy as an adult. Oh the shame!

CornishGem1975 · 02/08/2023 14:45

The Book of Brownies
Amelia Jane is Naughty Again
The Wishing Chair
Bimbo and Topsy

HollyHillock · 02/08/2023 14:45

The Magic Faraway Tree

It absolutely captured my imagination. I thought toffeepops biscuits would be like toffee shocks.

aceofbasefan20 · 02/08/2023 14:46

Absolutely loved the magic faraway tree books, I always became so engrossed in the stories when they visited a different land each week. My favourite character was Moonface. Heard it was meant to be made into a film, I really hope so🙂

SpringIntoChaos · 02/08/2023 14:46

I loved The Twins at At Clare's series so much I begged my parents to send me to boarding school! Of course they didn't 🤣

IsadoraQuagmire · 02/08/2023 14:47

I like all of them (NOT the Secret Seven, I didn't like the characters) but my favourites are The Five Find-Outers and Dog, I re-read those most. Also love the Famous Five, especially Julian. Prefer St Clares to Mallory Towers. Did NOT like the sound of Whyteleaf School in The Naughtiest Girl books where you had to SHARE everything and hand in your pocket money, I couldn't be doing with that!!

Uppersop · 02/08/2023 14:48

The Family at Red-Roofs and Mr Galliano’s Circus were my favourites. I also loved Tales of Toyland when I was a bit younger. I still have my copy and recently got it out to read to my grandchildren, but realised it would need some serious editing to meet today’s standards, so put it away again! My mum used to trawl jumble sales and second hand shops for Blyton’s books for me to read as her work was very much frowned upon in the 60’s and shops and libraries wouldn’t stock them.

blackheartsgirl · 02/08/2023 14:49

First one I ever remembered being read to and reading was Brer Rabbit. My gran used to read me this when I was staying at my grandparents when I was about 3 or 4.

then the Ss, famous five, the boarding school stories, I loved and still do the adventure series, my favourite was and still is the castle of adventure, it kept me company in audio version throughout a really rough time a couple of years ago. Also loved the R mysteries. Wasn’t massively keen on the find outer but still liked them.

haven’t really read any thing else of hers, I want to now!

endofthelinefinally · 02/08/2023 14:51

Island of adventure, Far away tree, and one book called The Treasure Hunters.

ginny93 · 02/08/2023 14:53

CornishGem1975 · 02/08/2023 14:45

The Book of Brownies
Amelia Jane is Naughty Again
The Wishing Chair
Bimbo and Topsy

Oh I think the book of brownies might be what I was thinking of when I said the goblin book 🙈

MalibuBetty · 02/08/2023 14:54

My favourite was Six Cousins at Mistletoe Farm. I also loved the sequel Six Cousins Again but not as much

MalibuBetty · 02/08/2023 14:55

Oh and I loved The House at the Corner too!
