Weekend away ALL alone - have you ever done it?

DH has a hobby for which he takes a week and 2-3 weekends away over the summer. I don't have a hobby as such, or not one that I can legitimately go away for a weekend to do.

So I was thinking of taking a weekend away, in the UK, just to go and have some time just me - reading, sleeping, eating etc.

Has anyone else done this? If so where did you go/what did you do while there and was it amazing?

I go to Edinburgh alone a couple of times a year.
I always choose a really nice hotel, always get a room with a fridge (very important) and always stay near the castle.
I've only done it since my kids left home though

Twice a year every year and I absolutely love it. And come back a much nicer person.

Three nights is WAY better than two.

I go to cities sometimes and see all the sights, eat in fab places and walk loads. I go to remote places too, and I read, hike, write, have campfires and stargaze. I don’t cook, but buy lovely things ready made and heat them up and eat them without plates. It’s fantastic.

Just go!

I often do this. Often to a spa hotel where I don’t do much other than swim/have treatments/read/eat or to a city/nice town where I get out a bit more, shopping, museum etc, or else to a coastal area with beaches and hill walks. I’ve also holidayed alone in various parts of Europe and twice to America. Would highly recommend it.

Not tied to weekends because I'm retired. I have done Bristol, Bath, Norwich, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Salisbury, Henley-on-Thames in the UK (and am going to Durham next week) plus New York, Boston, Budapest, Lille, Marseille and Lisbon. Sometimes to see gigs/theatre my DH is not bothered about, sometimes just to wander and chill.

I started off looking at a night in a hotel within an hour or two of home, just to get away a bit. Now looking at four night trips to Greece. This could get out of control! You lot are an inspiration!

I frequently duck out of family life for a solo night in a hotel. I eat Haribo, read, watch trash TV and sleep with no alarm. I now wfh so last time I had a midweek night and timed arrival home for minutes after DH would have left for the school run!
I'm always telling DH about places I want to go, things I want to do and how I don't know who to do it with, or friends who are all enthusiastic when it's just an idea, but flakey when it comes to booking, or worse, there partners don't want them to go away for a night or two.
This year I've fully embraced saying fuck it and have had 2 separate nights out in the nearby city to see live bands, and plan another to a further city in September. Got a long weekend in September too with a friend, but had already decided to do it solo if she bailed.

I've been "mum" for 12 years now and sometimes I just need to be me for a few hours.

DH is fully supportive. He does his solo things too.

Hi 59 rheumatoid arthritis and other bits malfunctioning but am going on hol to the sun any advice new to this site to any site really 😊

UndercoverCop · 28/07/2023 22:49

I haven't, mainly because I live by the coast and hate spas. I have however had blissful weekends alone at home with walks on the beach, lunch at my favourite café, glass of wine by the fire with a book I'd been meaning to read for ages.
I also used to travel a lot for work, for a number of years, so I think the novelty of a hotel/new city alone has worn off.

UndercoverCop · 28/07/2023 22:50

I definitely could do a week in Greece alone

TakenRoot · 28/07/2023 22:50

Numerous camping trips:
Walked along the S Downs
Various NT Properties
Walking, Peak District
Sea swimming

Love it.

Join the Facebook group Solo in style. Women over 50 travelling solo and loving it. Very inspirational with lots of good advice.

I was planning a solo trip earlier this year, but a friend invited herself along - so be careful who you tell 😄

Dustybell · 28/07/2023 22:55

Thanks will do but no fear apparently I snore quite loudly lolz

I go away on my own a lot and my best tip is to take an old cardigan and a paperback to leave at your pub/restaurant table when you go to the toilet.

EBearhug · 28/07/2023 22:58

Yes, but I'm single znd childless, whereas most of my friends aren't, so if I didn't go away sooner, I'd never go anywhere.

MirandaWest · 28/07/2023 22:59

I’ve stayed in a converted railway waiting room in Derbyshire, in the Isle of Man at a bed and breakfast and in a youth hostel in Whitby. Enjoyed some good walks, enjoyed the scenery and sometimes the sea too. Read a lot and didn’t have to think about anyone else’s needs for a few days which was a good feeling.

Genuinely really useful advice! Thanks

I'd start off gently with a night or two away in this country first! Just be aware that hotels contain other people so don't assume a good night's sleep ...

twilightcafe · 28/07/2023 23:44

Yep. I do this at least once a year when I see family in London. Book into a hotel - can come and go aa I please. Absolute bliss!

truthhurts23 · 28/07/2023 23:51

I’ve never but would love to , find a nice air bnb in an interesting area and go exploring

Costacoffeeplease · 29/07/2023 00:20

I don’t have kids but still enjoy a few days away on my own

I live in the algarve and go to a lovely hotel in Monchique with a fantastic spa, which caters for my disabilities

It’s calm, tranquil, the rooms are all suites with little kitchens, the staff are helpful and friendly and it’s only about 20 minutes from home

I’ve been several times over the last few years, on my own and with a friend

nokidshere · 29/07/2023 00:24

Ooh I love going away alone. I've done a few weekends over the years. I just like a 5 star hotel, huge room, balcony, fluffy robes, room service and a pile of books.

Throwingpots · 29/07/2023 00:27

Love going away solo, waking up in the mornings and deciding where and what I’m going to do that day. Usually involves a long walk with somewhere nice for lunch. Not having to consider anyone else except myself is a real treat.

continentallentil · 29/07/2023 00:29

Oh yes, have done lovely old fashioned hotel by a loch (big baths, fires, venison) walks and reading. A week in the canaries a couple of times - I had a massage everyday for one week, swimming and reading. Yoga retreat in an Italian hill town. Also often stay on a night after heavy work trips. Book without delay OP.

SheilaFentiman · 29/07/2023 00:34

Yes, I went to Salisbury, it was lovely
