Help, kids ill on holiday, can't work out what to do

DCs aged 14 and 16 spent the night being violently ill. The 14yo was sharing with 18yo who had to go to reception to get new bedding (we were busy with the 16yo).

The rest off us are fine, the only thing we can think it could be is the hotel pool as only these two used it (and last time they were both parallel ill like this was when they caught a stomach bug from a river).

We're due to leave here tomorrow to drive to another European country to meet friends and share a house for a week, obv we can't move until Saturday. So my plan was to speak to the hotel manager today and say they have to house us for an extra night until they're safe to go out and about. And need to speak to the holiday rental and say that my friend will pick up the keys and we'll follow a day later.

Am I missing anything and does anyone know what the French rules are re staying home after a stomach bug and can point me to them? Or should we do something else? I've had one hour max sleep and ama bit broken

Great minds @EbiRaisukaree

I remember having the most dreadful vodka hangover in Cornwall when I was 15.

My parents thought I'd stayed up late playing cards with some other teenagers. We'd snuck out to the local nightclub.

It's highly unlikely to be a virus if it is picked up in a pool. It will be a parasitic infection. This can be spread to others in their bodily waste and vomit. If they keep to their own rooms and bathroom, they shouldn't spread the infection. Lots of hand washing and spray with heavy duty cleaner.

'Dealing' with the 16 year old makes me suspicious too. Surely a 16 year old can vomit or have diarrhea without their parents' help unless very drunk.

Some people are being really horrible here. Just because the kids are older it doesn’t mean they don’t feel horrendous and can just ‘get on with it’. I remember being hospitalized at 19 with acute food poisoning and I felt so vulnerable. Never been so ill in my life.
Forget ‘rules’. You travel when they are stable enough to.

I agree . Jesus. Where's the compassion? Doesn't matter how old you are v and d is horrendous.

@Trickofthetrade can you imagine if it was the husband who was ill? No doubt the vultures here would expect him to drive, perform a few press ups and cook a 3 course meal!

Immodium, sick bags, wet wipes and lucozade. Plus some bleach for the new property. If it has two bathrooms allocate the sickies to one bathroom and one bedroom and quarantine them. Get some rehydration sachets too if you don't have any with you.

It sounds like it must be quite a violent bug for children who are almosy adults to have not made it to the bathroom and needed new bedsheets, I hope they are ok soon.

gogomoto · 27/07/2023 10:35

Imodium is your friend, doesn't cure but can halt symptoms, then get them to sip water, ice lollies are ok and stick to plain (dairy free) toast, bananas, apples and ideally brown rice, nothing more.

They absolutely didn't have any alcohol we were with them every second yesterday as was on a long day (coach) trip to Paris, got back at 9pm and 5 mins later the putting started (thankfully only puking, loo and sink are in separate rooms). We've not eaten at hotel and they've not eaten the same things.

Hotel have been lovely and despite our rooms being booked for Friday have reserved other ones just in case. And chef is on standby for rice and chicken when they fancy it.

We're N France so weather similar to UK, heat stroke not an option.

Seems like they've both stopped puking and friend has suggested we go to host and they quarantine together away from rest of us, so that's likely what we'll do.

Thanks, hated of vomit plus no sleep plus being abroad just completely befuddled my brain

To be fair I got an horrendous stomach bug on holiday last year. I think it may have been linked to some seafood I eat at a local restaurant.

There is no chance I could have moved from the hotel room for at least 24 hours. The idea of a car journey would have been horrific. I wouldn't have even got as far as the car tbh. It was horrendous and actually really painful.
As for not getting to the bathroom - sadly incidents can happen as these things often cause very violent and very urgent sickness and more with little notice, especially initially.

I think some compassion is needed from some posters. Being teens doesn't have to mean they are hungover or drink, not does it mean they don't need some support when being really quite poorly. Luckily my Dh and our 20y Dd were very compassionate and helped me out when needed. It wasn't a nice time for me, or then I suspect, but it's no one's fault.

My hotel were amazing. Luckily it wasn't when we needed to move on. They noticed when I didn't make breakfast. On hearing the hotel staff did everything they could. They supplied clean bedding every day until I was better, left extra bedding and towels incase they were needed, added extra bottles of water to our room fridge through the time, sent over plain snacks for when I felt better and much more. Luckily compassion came without asking.

How are things now OP?

Poolbugs · 29/07/2023 17:44

Thankfully fine @whatabeautifulwedding . They both stopped being sick at 6 in the morning, took the day very easy and ate mainly the(delicious) chicken and rice the chef did them.

By the next day they were both fine, we got to the house and they squirreled away til this morning and now you couldn't tell they'd been ill. And the rest of us seem to have escaped.

Really lucky

If it was a bug from the pool they would likely have diarrhoea.
