I'm trying to decide if mine are too late, it seems to be creeping later and later.

mine are just 8 and 11, neither in bed before 9 unless little one really tired. She doesnt go to bed until he does. often 9.30 - 10 in holidays.

InterferingOutsider · 27/07/2023 06:39

My 11 year old has been going later and later as the holidays progress. She should be in bed at 830 but the day before yesterday she went at 10pm and yesterday woke at 1030 which isn't really sustainable. We've decided to let her have lights out at 9 until the last week of the holidays, providing she's up on time on the days we want to go out.

WotNoUserName · 27/07/2023 06:45

When mine were that age primary school age was 7.30, lights off at 8, secondary age 9pm, lights off 9.30.

During the holidays I was very lax and sent them up when I wanted peace and quiet - sometimes that would be 6pm 😂, sometimes 10pm if we were watching a film.

PuttingDownRoots · 27/07/2023 06:57

The rule is upstairs, no phones etc by 8.30. (Which I sometimes relax to 9pm on non school nights if if near the end of a film for example).

I don't expect them to sleep then, just winding down and the TV switches to adult stuff. They are 10&12.

Atalanta1 · 27/07/2023 07:02

Last half of primary, in bed at 8pm, they could read for half an hour then lights out 8.30. First two years of secondary, bed at 9, lights out 9.30.

MinnieMountain · 27/07/2023 07:15

Our 9yo has his bedtime story until 8pm then reads until 9. He never sleeps in, so by his own choice he’s never up later.

ChimChimeny · 27/07/2023 07:18

11 here, in bed at 8.15, asleep by 8.30/45 but she wakes 6/6.15 most days.

The only time she sleeps later is if we are on holiday for 2 weeks and gets into a new routine of staying up later

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 27/07/2023 07:19

DS1 is 11 - up by 8.30, lights off 8.45
DS2 is 8 - up by 7, lights off 7.30
DS3 is 6 - up by 6.45, lights off 7

TheChosenTwo · 27/07/2023 07:23

11 year old - in bed by 9pm; reads until I say goodnight to him at 9:30 and he can turn his light off when he’s ready. School mornings I wake him at 7. So far during the holidays he’s been waking naturally between 8:30-9:30.
I’m still working so his bedtime is staying the same until we go on holiday when he won’t have a bedtime and can just stay up until he’s ready for bed.

aynsleyredder · 27/07/2023 07:23

My 9 yr old is in bed at 8pm and can read for a little while, on a school night. Weekends she can stay up until 9pm.

unlikelychump · 27/07/2023 07:33

Ok. My older two are turning into 2100-2130 so that sounds ok. My 7 yo is more like 2200. He finds it really hard to get to sleep. I am wondering how awful that it

My ds10 doesn't seem to need much sleep it's bed at 9 , reading /Asking Alexa stuff til 9.30 then asleep by 9.45 he is up at 6 every day without fail , he tried to get up at 5.15 the other week but I made him go back to bed .

InDubiousBattle · 27/07/2023 07:43

My 8&9 years olds normally go up to bed between 7.30 and 8 but they read for a but so probably go to sleep at 8.30 ish. They'll obviously stay up a bit later for things like cubs and holidays.
Does your 7 year old get up OK in the morning? Manage OK at school? My two stayed up until 10 last night and they're still asleep now so wouldn't cope with such a late night regularly when they're in school.

LetItGoHome · 27/07/2023 07:43

Mine are 8 and 11 years.
8 year old goes up at 7, I read to her, then she will read her own book. Lights out 8 pm.
11 year old goes up at 7:45. We read to him then he reads his own book. Lights out 8:30.

It seems mine are very early but neither have ever asked to stay up later. They sleep well and wake up naturally themselves somewhere between 7:30 and 8 in the morning.

AssertiveGertrude · 27/07/2023 07:45

All in bed by 8.30 to 9 (nearly ten)
they chat for a bit and still have a story read to them

EarringsandLipstick · 27/07/2023 07:47

That's early @LetItGoHome

Do your DC, especially 11 yo, not do any sports / activities? My DC do every evening and the ones for my 11 yo finish at 8 so that bedtime would never work.

My 11 yo gets ready for bed c9, lights out 930 on a school night.

He has two older siblings tho, so that can delay him.

MandUs · 27/07/2023 07:48

How are people maintaining these early bedtimes???? Mine would never managed to be in bed for 8:30 etc due to hobbies. Examples:

DC1 in P6: gymnastics til 21:00 on one day, then til 20:00 on another day. Guides finishes on 20:15 on a third day. Football stops at 20:30 on another day.

SaysRelaaxxx · 27/07/2023 07:51

8yr old - half 7 to 8

Q2C4 · 27/07/2023 07:52

I'm quite surprised some of these times are so early. My DC is 3yrs old, no longer naps and isn't asleep until 8:30pm at the absolute earliest, whatever we try, even after a full day at nursery 8am-6pm.

Do bed times naturally come forward when they start school?

InDubiousBattle · 27/07/2023 07:56

MandUs my ds (9)does go to bed later on cubs night, he gets home at 8.30 and goes straight up so he's still asleep by 9 ish. Dd (8) does Brownies until 8 but again, she goes to bed pretty much as soon as she gets home. They do one other hobby each but they finish earlier.

I think children's sleep habits just vary.

At 3, both of mine went to bed at 7. My 7 year old is still in bed for 7 (except for Beavers night) though he reads for a while before he goes to sleep.

fartfacenotfatface · 27/07/2023 08:01

School nights

7 - 7:30pm to read, lights out 8:00pm
9 - 8:00pm to read, lights out 8:30pm
11 - 8:30pm to read, lights out 9:00pm

Weekends / school holidays they get an extra 30 mins or so, or a bit later again occasionally for a treat (movie night, trip out etc).

StillWantingADog · 27/07/2023 08:01

Mine are 8 and 10. Ideally 9pm though the 8yo struggles to sleep before 9.30
they don’t get up until 8ish though
I’m pretty relaxed in the holidays

elQuintoConyo · 27/07/2023 08:02

Age 5-9 it was 9pm in bed, 9.30 lights out. Now he's 11, it's bed at 10, lights out 10.30.

However, we're 5 minutes' walk from his primary which starts at 9. When he starts secondary this September, he'll need to leave at 7:40 for 8 o'clock start, so naturally up to bed earlier for an earlier wake up.

He has never gone to bed earlier than 9 throughout primary.

mermeria · 27/07/2023 08:04

8 and 10. Both upstairs around 7, 8yo reads till 7.30, 10yo reads till 8. Clubs in the week finish earlier than this with the exception of guides so a slightly later bedtime once a week for the 10yo. Sounds early but they both go to bed willingly. They don’t use phones, tablets or games consoles at all which may help.
