If your bedrooms are on the ground or first floor...

Do you sleep with the windows open when it's very hot at night? I'm not talking about the transom windows, but the actual, full-size windows. We have been doing so (first floor) because when it gets too hot it's that, or no sleep. But we were talking to friends who said it's quite a risk because anyone could climb in.

Our thinking is that if someone wanted to come in they would either try the front or back door, or a room where they can see there is nobody sleeping... Is that not the case?

Do you all sleep with the windows shut even when it's very hot if you don't have transom windows? Even if your bedrooms are on the ground or first floor?

Bedrooms on 1st floor here and yes we sleep with the windows open even in the bedroom with the pitched roof under it.

SirenSays · 26/07/2023 14:40

Yes I do. By the time someone's wrestled their way through the bug screen and the blinds they'll have the dogs to contend with so I'm not worried.

moomoogalicious · 26/07/2023 14:42

Yes windows are open on the 1st floor. Good luck to anyone trying to get past our dog

ChevySilverado · 26/07/2023 14:45

We have bedrooms on ground and first floor, windows are open overnight when we’re hot. We’re in the middle of nowhere and have dogs so I never think about it.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 26/07/2023 14:46

First floor here and windows are open 24/7.

TrueScrumptious · 26/07/2023 14:46

Yes, always have the windows open. I’ll have to Google transom window, because I don’t know what that is. I have sash windows and you can lock them in a partially open position.

Georgiepud · 26/07/2023 14:49

Same here.

Georgiepud · 26/07/2023 14:50

Same here to blinds at windows and large dog in the bedroom.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 26/07/2023 14:52

First floor and yes.
Would do on the ground floor though would be more worried about dogs going out then people coming in.

Pkhsvd · 26/07/2023 14:53

Yes we do; I’m a fairly light sleeper and the all outside our bedrooms would need someone pretty skilled at climbing so I’m pretty sure I’d wake up plus then they’d have to get past our blinds which would be very noisy

DoesItHaveKosovo · 26/07/2023 14:53

Yes, always locked partially open or unable to open further from the outside.

I don’t think I’d sleep with a window wide open on any floor, unless there was a mesh screen on it.

Allywill · 26/07/2023 14:59

Are you equating ground floor with first floor? in the UK first floor means the first upstairs floor so one above ground floor. it would usually be quite difficult for anyone to quietly get in a first floor open window at night - they would need to put a ladder up, climb in a window all while being quiet enough not to wake up the occupants. unlikely. ground floor may be a slightly different concern but even then most windows would require some effort and noise to gain access

CottagePieLaLaLa · 26/07/2023 15:44

I'm in the UK. I mean ground floor and first floor as in the floor above ground floor...

First floor and windows are open. I think it would be fairly challenging to climb in.

I dont think i would on the ground floor though

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 26/07/2023 15:56

Ground floor and windows stay firmly shut since someone tried to climb in (previous owner, not me).

Transoms are fanlights.

We (English) tend to say fanlights for small windows above large (casement) windows, and sometimes say transoms for small windows above doors.

In other parts of the world, though, all small too windows are transoms.

I'm in a bungalow and if it's really hot then the main window is open. It's one of those that slides to middle when fully open so unless the intruder is a size 0 they've no hope of getting in without me hearing them.

JobMatch3000 · 26/07/2023 16:03

We're in a bungalow with sash and case windows. They are open most of the time to air out the bedroom.

Most burglaries are opportunistic - try the front door and grab a handbag/car keys - rather than someone climbing in an open window in the middle of the night so it doesn't bother me at all.

I've never thought about it when sleeping above ground floor, just fling them open.

Soon we will be moving and I'll have a ground floor bedroom for the first time ever so my vague plan is to get locking adjustable catches. I do have dogs, though.

persisted · 26/07/2023 16:09

Yes, on the first floor window is open every night.

The risk of me being a grumpy cow due to not sleeping properly in the heat is much, much greater than the likelihood of someone deciding to try their luck with a ladder in the middle of the night.

Redglitter · 26/07/2023 16:11

Ground floor here & bedroom windows are open all the time

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 26/07/2023 16:11

Bungalow. The windows are always open a bit at night. It did bother me a little at first but I don't worry about it now, after a few years. I'm a very light sleeper so I'd hear anyone trying to get in at the back, and at the front there are prickly bushes (good luck trying to get in there!). Airflow is more important to me than possible burglary. But I do know someone who had a guy climb into her bedroom, and she was on the first floor. She always has the windows shut (understandably). He'd climbed up the drainpipe.

gogomoto · 26/07/2023 16:14

Yes 1st floor but our house is very secure, rear of house is a coach house and 6ft fences, mid terrace

littleducks · 26/07/2023 16:16

Sleep on ground floor with patio style door open onto back garden. Just doesn't really worry me

boboshmobo · 26/07/2023 16:17

That's why I wouldn't buy a bungalow ..

In foreign countries they have metal bars so you can haven windows open safely which is sensible .
