If your bedrooms are on the ground or first floor...

Do you sleep with the windows open when it's very hot at night? I'm not talking about the transom windows, but the actual, full-size windows. We have been doing so (first floor) because when it gets too hot it's that, or no sleep. But we were talking to friends who said it's quite a risk because anyone could climb in.

Our thinking is that if someone wanted to come in they would either try the front or back door, or a room where they can see there is nobody sleeping... Is that not the case?

Do you all sleep with the windows shut even when it's very hot if you don't have transom windows? Even if your bedrooms are on the ground or first floor?

We are not in the UK, but have a the sliding door open, with a mosquito net and a folding metal shutter which has the horizontal holes in it. Only to keep the light out otherwise I would not close the shutter.

Bedrooms are all on the 1st floor. TBH it wouldn’t even occur to me not to open them at night - we do close them when we’re out.

I would never want to live anywhere with ground floor bedrooms - unless it’s absolutely freezing I absolutely need windows open at night. And properly open, not just a crack, esp. in summer.

Ground floor and no, never

mondaytosunday · 26/07/2023 18:41

First floor yes in London they are open.
I had a ground floor flat which was burgled. When the police came I told them the first floor flat owners were away, and she said they didn't get many break ins on the first floor (their entry door was next to mine, but the burglars came in a window).
I also have dogs which gives me more security.
I would not have any windows open on the ground floor though.

Inthegarden23 · 26/07/2023 18:42

My bedroom used to be on ground floor I still had my window open . I also used to leave my back door wide open throughout the night. I'm in a different place now. I have all my windows open as I feel to. I leave them open when I'm out as well .

Zippedydodah · 26/07/2023 19:15

Upstairs windows always open unless very cold, downstairs windows open during the day and at night when it’s hot. Ddog would bark at anyone who tried entering so I don’t worry about burglars etc

LuluGuinea · 26/07/2023 19:17

Ground floor bedroom here and yes I do. It's risk I take because I can't sleep when hot. And it's a bigger risk to keep an oscillating fan on at night.

Chocolatesandroses · 26/07/2023 19:20

First floor we have windows open all the time and if someone wants to get in they would need a ladder and to be honest the windows aren’t even that big so good luck a grown adult trying to fit inside it

TheChosenTwo · 26/07/2023 19:23

First floor and windows wide open despite there being a roof outside it.
If we get burgled so be it. I’m not suffocating on the off chance. Our bedroom window is open all year round. It’s pissing it down here today and I’m lying on my bed with the window open, it’s lovely!

YouPistonWhat · 26/07/2023 19:24

First floor -yes.
Ground floor….we have been looking at bungalows and so many near us have patio doors in the bedroom, and no other windows, and it really puts me off them because I know I wouldn’t feel safe with them open.

JimnJoyce · 26/07/2023 22:22

i'm on a ground floor and yes I have the windows open at night when its hot and my bedroom window is usually open anyway.
My dog sleeps in my room too.

GroutScrubberExtraordinaire · 26/07/2023 22:27

Fist floor - yes absolutely!

But there's 35kg of dog in here and I am fairly sure he'd take a chunk out of anyone climbing in. He'd certainly give off a lot of loud, deep and scary barks and growls and start jumping at them.

SophiaElise · 26/07/2023 22:30

No - but my room is always cool even in very warm weather.

londonba · 26/07/2023 22:34

l personally would shut all windows when all of us are out of the house, and only keep first floor windows open overnight (in response to the poster who keeps windows open 24/7).

I think it’s unlikely that scum would climb in an open window as burglaries aren’t necessarily spur of the moment right? Some burglars might scan your home and watch your routine or patterns of behaviour over time, so if your window is always open, you might make yourself a target.

For me it’s also dealing with the amount of flies that might come in, and the general noise of outside like seagulls etc

MollysBrolly · 26/07/2023 23:01

I'm on the third floor and windows closed and 2 duvets cover me right up to my chin - middle of summer too (we'll not this shit summer). My kids do the same too. I think it's a comfort thing or were all weird

CindersAgain · 26/07/2023 23:05

Ground floor, we do have limiters on. First floor, yes, wouldn’t give it a thought. Only burglaries near us are for car keys and of sheds.

AvengedQuince · 26/07/2023 23:11

Yes, in a bungalow I've slept with ground floor windows open and just a flyscreen, and also the back door open and screendoor shut. None remotely break-in proof.
