This is in chat and not aibu for a reason so please be kind.
I am trying to do some "self esteem" work

And one thing I keep coming back to is what do I stand for? What am I passing on to the dc?

We have had a really tricky run of bad luck and financial issues, so for example I guess I am trying to teach them that money isn't important but it feels like it is when you don't have it.

I am not really sure what I stand for and interested in how others see it.

Be kind but never let people walk over you
Its ok to cut toxic friends/family out of your life
Its ok to say no
Enjoy the small things

The short version, I live for myself and to try to be a good person.

The long version I'll add later.

’do your best and forget the rest’ knowing that the best you can do at different stages or your life and even different days of the week will vary.

’sphere of control and sphere of influence’ it’s not my job to make sure someone is in a good mood or nice to me. I can’t control that, bad things will happen all I can control is what I do next.

’not my monkey, not my circus’ - other people’s issues are exactly that… their issues, don’t get caught In the crossfire

and ‘dogs bark’ - dogs bark and it’s just noise. Some people never have anything nice to say, or will always focus on the negative. It’s in their nature and nothing to do with you

Comfort is a greater barrier to progress than hardship. So make sure you're never too comfortable.

OneFrenchEgg · 26/07/2023 17:43

Every day, I aim not to make someone else's day worse.
So if I complain or raise an issue I do it respectfully. I don't make gestures when I'm driving. I smile at strangers. Etc.

Giggorata · 26/07/2023 17:47

Harm none.

This is surprisingly difficult.

Noicant · 26/07/2023 17:53

I think don’t be a dick and don’t be a pushover. If you want the world to be a good place it starts with you trying to be a good person, when you cross peoples paths try to be a good bit of their day even if they forget it, a door held open, a smile. As I get older don’t be afraid to tell the truth. Be grateful for what you have instead of counting all the things you don’t.

But as a creed to live by, don't be a dick os really it.

Yep this is mine - don’t be a dick is an excellent motto to live by, it doesn’t mean being a walkover just treat people well.

SweetPetrichor · 26/07/2023 17:59

Never buy anything you can’t afford to buy outright, and never skip an opportunity to talk to those you love.

UnfunnyJester · 26/07/2023 18:25

Be careful with money and be sensible about what you spend money on.

Treat people like how they treat you (within reason)

The only people you can trust completely is your family (I know that doesn't apply to everyone)

Be respectful to our world and those in it.

Work hard then play.

coxesorangepippin · 26/07/2023 18:37

The world is dog eat dog. You need to work hard, do your best at school and do unto others as you would etc etc.

Get a good job, earn good money and your life will be easier. This is achieved through education

coxesorangepippin · 26/07/2023 18:37

Touché, jester 😄🤠
